American Legion Baseball Roundup: June 13, 2019
Wilmington Post 10 7, Pleasure Island Post 129 6 (14 innings)
In a game that lasted 4 hours, 35 minute and featured 10 pitchers and 493 total pitches, Wilmington Post 10 secured the walk-off victory on a throwing error to remain unbeaten.
Wilmington (2-0, 2-0 Area II) led 3-0 entering the seventh inning before Pleasure Island (5-3, 4-2) scored four runs with two outs to take the lead. Trent Eason (Ashley) tied the game with a two-run single and a throwing error allowed Mason Phillips (South Brunswick) to score the go-ahead run.
A one-out single up the middle from Wilmington’s Brett Kemp (New Hanover/Francis Marion) plated Rocco Farmintino (Ashley) to send the game into extra innings.
That was just the beginning of the craziness that included the sprinklers turning on prior to the 14th inning.
Pleasure Island scored a pair of runs in the ninth inning to take a 6-4 lead, but again Wilmington evened the score in the bottom half of the frame.
The score remained the same until the bottom of the 14th when Mac Hutchins (New Hanover) scored the winning run on a throwing error.
With the bases loaded and one out, Wilmington’s Kyle Smith (New Hanover) hit a ground ball back to the mound. Tyler McNeill (Ashley) threw home to get the force out, but catcher Ashton Evans made an errant throw to third base that ended up in left field.
Wilmington’s Alex Sniffen (New Hanover) led all hitters by going 4-for-7 with three RBI. Smith was 3-for-6 with two walks, a double and two runs.
Five Wilmington pitchers combined to strike out 23. Mitch Baddour (New Hanover/William Peace) entered in the second inning and fanned eight in his five innings of work. Alex Holland (Topsail/Catawba) struck out five in two scoreless innings and Kemp got the victory by striking out four and not allowing a hit in three innings.
Eason went 3-for-7 with three RBI and a run to lead Pleasure Island. Cameron Poole (South Brunswick) was 2-for-4 with two walks and a run.
Pleasure Island also used five pitchers, who combined to strikeout 15 batters. Derek Astoske (South Brunswick) started and whiffed seven in three innings.
Wallace Post 156 8, Port City Post 545 7 (8 innings)
Wallace scored a pair of runs on walks with two outs in the seventh inning to send the game to extra innings and then scored the winning run on an error to hand Port City a loss in its season opener.
Port City (0-1, 0-1 Area II) scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning to build a 7-5 lead. Chris Konrady (Laney) doubled home Mayes Peterson (Laney) and then scored on Garrett Wolff’s (Laney) single up the middle.
Konrady, Wolff and Grayson Irwin (Laney) each collected two hits for Port City. Chase Hall (Laney) allowed only one earned run and finished with six strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings.
Wallace (3-4, 2-1) was led offensively by Jackson Murray (East Duplin/N.C. Wesleyan), who went 2-for-3 with a walk, double and four RBI.
