Three pitchers – Chase Hardee (New Hanover), Alex Holland (Topsail/Catawba) and Matt Suggs (Hoggard/UNCW) – combined on a four-hit shutout with 11 strikeouts to keep Wilmington unbeaten on the young season.

Hardee got the start and earned the victory by tossing four scoreless innings. He scattered a pair of singles, struck out four and picked off a pair of baserunners.

“I grew up with over half of the Port City team playing middle school ball with them and it’s always fun competing against guys you know,” Hardee said.

Holland was just as dominant in his two innings, striking out five of the eight batters he faced and allowing only a one-out single in the sixth inning. Suggs fanned a pair in the final frame to secure the shutout.

In 26 total innings, 10 Wilmington pitchers have combined to allow one earned run (seven total) for an ERA of 0.27 to go along with 38 strikeouts and 11 walks.

“Our pitchers have been really good,” Wilmington coach Scott Sandlin said. “You take away the ninth inning against Pleasure Island the other night and we’ve put up a lot of zeroes.”

Wilmington (3-0, 3-0 Area II) grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a single up the middle from Alex Sniffen (New Hanover) and a bases loaded walk to Jonathan Manis (New Hanover). Through three games, Sniffen is hitting .615 (8-for-13) with eight RBI.

The advantage was 4-0 after Chris Wetherill (Hoggard) reached on an infield single, stole second and third bases and scored on a throwing error.

Chase Nixon (New Hanover) drove in the final two runs with an opposite-field single in the sixth. In his first contest of the summer, Nixon went 2-for-2 with a walk.

“It was fun getting back out here and playing baseball with all my friends,” Nixon said. “All I was trying to do was hit the ball hard.”

Zach Zabriskie (Hoggard) also reached base three times on a single, walk and a hit by pitch.

Port City (1-3, 1-3 Area II) didn’t have a runner in scoring position until the seventh inning when Mayes Peterson (Laney) singled to right field and advanced to second on an error. Suggs was able to strand both runners and end the game by getting a ground out.

Peterson and Matt Linker (Laney) each had a single and a walk to lead Port City.

Pitt County Post 39 10, Pleasure Island Post 129 1

For the second day in a row, Pleasure Island was undone by a big inning.

Host Pitt County broke open a 1-1 tie with six runs in the bottom of the fourth and tacked on three more runs to secure the win in the final contest of the two-day Pitt County American Legion Showcase.

Mason Phillips (South Brunswick) went 2-for-4 to lead Pleasure Island (6-5) offensively. Branton Jernigan (Ashley) added a double, walk and scored the lone run on a two-out single from Trent Eason (Ashley) in the third inning.
