New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender counties produce a large number of athletes that continue their careers at the next level.  Each week, this list will feature a number of area athletes who are finding success in the college ranks.

Soph. pitcher Caleb Bishop, Mount Olive (2017 New Hanover grad): The southpaw scattered six hits over seven shutout innings with four strikeouts in Saturday’s 4-3 victory at Southern Wesleyan.

Sr. infielder Trey Croom, N.C. Wesleyan (2015 New Hanover grad): In five contests, Croom hit .350 (7-for-20) with two doubles, one triple one home run, four walks, eight RBI and five runs.

R-Soph. utiility Trader Flora, King (2015 Topsail grad): In back-to-back victories over Tusculum (12-10 on Tuesday) and Bluefield (5-2 on Wednesday), Flora went 3-for-5 with four walks, one double one home run, four RBI and two runs.

Soph. infielder/outfielder Sam Hall, Clemson (2017 Topsail grad): Over the past four games, Hall has hit .308 (4-for-13) with three walks, two doubles, two stolen bases, three RBI and three runs.

Fr. outfielder Brett Kemp, Francis Marion (2018 New Hanover grad): Hit a bases-clearing double to center field in the eighth inning of a 23-10 loss at UNC Pembroke on Sunday.

Soph. infielder Josh Madole, UNC Greensboro (2017 Topsail grad): Extended his hitting streak to 13 games and finished a four-game stretch with six hits in 17 at-bats to go along with three runs and one RBI.

Jr. infielder Brad Pennington, N.C. Wesleyan (2016 Hoggard grad): Hit .389 (7-for-18) with five walks, three RBI and six runs over a five-game stretch.

Jr. pitcher Payton Rice, Embry-Riddle (2016 Topsail grad): Allowed one earned run on three hits and struck out a pair in seven innings during Saturday’s 4-3 win at Tampa.

Soph. pitcher Austin Skipper, William Peace (2017 New Hanover grad): Tossed another gem in an 8-1 win at Maryville, scattering six hits over eight scoreless innings. Skipper hasn’t allowed a run over his last 17 innings.

Jr. outfielder Tyler Stanley, Elon (2016 West Brunswick grad): Blasted a grand slam in the second inning and later added an RBI single to help Elon pick up a 16-8 victory over Towson on Sunday. Stanley was 3-for-6 with five RBI, two runs and a stolen base.

Jr. Blake Taylor (2016 Wilmington Christian Academy grad): Finished tied for 14th after shooting 71-68-72 at the Irish Creek Intercollegiate in Kannapolis over the weekend.

Fr. Xavier Williams, N.C. A&T (2018 South Brunswick grad): Made three birdies and shot a 1-over-par 73 on the final day of the Towson Spring Invitational on Sunday.

Sr. attack Jake Trafton, Mars Hill (2015 Hoggard grad): In losses against Queens and Emmanuel, Trafton scored three goals and dished out eight assists.

Jr. Dylan Kraft, ECU (2015 Trask grad): Won the javelin with a distance of 199-4 at the ECU Bill Carson Invitational over the weekend.

R-Jr. Derrick Wheeler, N.C. A&T (2015 North Brunswick grad): Placed fourth in the hammer throw with a distance of 168-0 at the Phoenix Invitational hosted by Elon.

Jr. KeAndre Yeoman, UNCW (2016 North Brunswick grad): Ran a 55.04 in the 400 hurdles to earn a fifth-place finish at the ECU Bill Carson Invitational.

Fr. catcher/utility Mallory Brooks, Louisburg (2018 Hoggard grad): Had a double, two triples, three RBI and two runs in Saturday’s 15-7 win against Bryant & Stratton.

Fr. outfielder Savannah Capobianco, Louisburg (2018 Laney grad): Connected on her first collegiate home run in the second inning to help the Hurricanes pick up a 13-4 victory over Bryant & Stratton on Sunday.

Jr. outfielder Jade D’Louhy, Johnson C. Smith (2016 North Brunswick grad): Hit .429 (6-for-14) with three walks, one double, two stolen bases, three RBI and seven runs in four victories.

Jr. pitcher/infielder Preston Ellenberg, Catawba (2015 North Brunswick grad): Picked up two victories in the circle by allowing only two runs on eight hits with seven strikeouts over 13 innings.

Jr. infielder Jordan Floyd, Wingate (2016 Ashley grad): In Sunday’s doubleheader at Anderson, Floyd went 4-for-7 with a home run, three RBI and two runs.

Sr. utility Charlene Thompson, Mount Olive (2015 Laney grad): Went 5-for-11 with one triple, four stolen bases and two runs over a four-game stretch.

Jr. Katy Flax, UNC Pembroke (2016 Ashley grad): Picked up her second straight top-five finish by tying for fourth at the Bash at the Beach in Daytona Beach, Fla. Flax shot 77-76 for a total of 153.

Fr. Anna Moore, York (2018 Hoggard grad): Helped York cruise to a victory at the Spartan Invitational in York, Pa. by shooting 76-81 to finish in a tie for second place.

Sr. Cameryn Smith, Queens (2015 West Brunswick grad): Finished her career with a 21st-place finish at the SAC Championship by shooting 78-78-79 over the three-day event.

Fr. midfielder Skii Bollinger, St. Andrews (2018 Ashley grad): In Tuesday’s 17-11 loss to Asbury, Bollinger found the back of the net four times and dished out three assists.

Fr. midfielder/attack Averee Gerold, Longwood (2018 Ashley grad): Scored her first collegiate goal early in the second half to help lead the Lancers to a 13-12 comeback win at Gardner-Webb on Wednesday.

Jr. attack Ashley Merritt, Berry (2016 Ashley grad): Scored four goals and added an assist in a 12-11 loss against Oglethorpe on Tuesday.

Soph. attack Elizabeth Peasley, Averett (2017 Laney grad): Put home the game-winning goal with 2:36 left on the clock in a 13-12 victory over Piedmont on Saturday. Peasley finished with a team-high six goals and 10 draw controls.

Soph. Kara Ferner, Christopher Newport (2017 Hoggard grad): Cruised to a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 2 singles to help the Captains earn a 9-0 victory at Frostburg on Saturday.

Fr. Essence Newkirk, Lenoir-Rhyne (2018 New Hanover grad): Finished third in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 15.28 at Saturday’s Lenoir-Rhyne Classic.
