Shining at the Next Level: February 14-20, 2019

New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender counties produce a large number of athletes that continue their careers at the next level.  Each week, this list will feature a number of area athletes who are finding success in the college ranks.

Soph. pitcher Caleb Bishop, Mount Olive (2017 New Hanover grad): Had another solid outing on Friday against Queens, allowing 1 run on 3 hits over 4 2/3 innings. Bishop also struck out 7 in the 1-0 loss.

Fr. catcher Colby Emmertz, East Tennessee St. (2018 Topsail grad): In a pair of games, Emmertz hit .286 (2-for-7) with 2 walks, a double and 4 RBI.

Jr. outfielder Cory Everett, Erskine (2015 New Hanover grad): Blasted a 2-run homer in the fourth inning of a 10-3 loss at Wingate on Feb. 13.

Jr. outfielder Chris Graham, College of Charleston (2015 North Brunswick grad): Hit .286 (2-for-7) with 3 walks and 3 runs to help the Cougars sweep their season-opening series against UNC Asheville.

Soph. infielder/outfielder Sam Hall, Clemson (2017 Topsail grad): In Saturday’s 7-2 victory over South Alabama, Hall went 2-for-3 with a home run, 2 walks, 3 RBI and a run.

Fr. pitcher Zach Kelly, Queens (2018 South Brunswick grad): Secured his first collegiate victory on Friday against Mount Olive by tossing 4 shutout innings. He allowed only 2 hits and struck out 7.

Fr. pitcher Price King, Brunswick CC (2018 Ashley grad):  Allowed 1 unearned run while striking out 6 in 4 1/3 innings out of bullpen to earn the victory in Saturday’s season-opening 6-2 victory over the ECU club team.

Soph. infielder Josh Madole, UNC Greensboro (2017 Topsail grad): Hit .333 (4-for-12) with 3 RBI in three wins.

Fr. outfielder Parker Nolan, Davidson (2018 Hoggard grad): Has reached base in his first two plate appearances. Nolan drew a walk on Friday and scored a run. On Saturday, he collected his first career hit.

R-Jr. pitcher Shelton Perkins, James Madison (2015 North Brunswick grad): In wins against Norfolk St. and Longwood, Perkins tossed 3 shutout innings out of the bullpen. He allowed only 1 hit while striking out 6 and walking 1.

Fr. infielder/utility David Pierson (2018 Coastal Christian grad): Pierson has started his collegiate career by going 2-for-2 with a double, walk and 3 RBI.

Jr. outfielder Tyler Stanley, Elon (2016 West Brunswick grad): Through four games, Stanley is hitting .400 (4-for-10) with a double, triple, 2 walks, 3 RBI and 3 runs.

Sr. utility/pitcher Danny Wilson, UNC Asheville (2015 Topsail grad): Reached base in 7 of his his 11 plate appearances with 4 walks and 3 singles. Wilson also scored 2 runs and had an RBI in the three-game series against College of Charleston.

Jr. A.J. Frye, N.C. Wesleyan (2016 Hoggard grad): Finished with 18 points on 6 of 10 shooting from the field in Tuesday’s 82-78 loss to Averett in the first round of the USA South Tournament.

Sr. Tyre Gathright, Saint Augustine’s (2015 Ashley grad): Scored a team-best 19 points on 8 of 15 shooting to go along with 5 rebounds on Saturday against Shaw.

Jr. Saadiq Johnson, Warren Wilson (2015 West Brunswick grad): In 20 minutes of action off the bench, Johnson scored 15 points on 5 of 11 shooting during Tuesday’s loss at Apprentice in the EMAC Tournament.

Soph. Blake Smith, Pfeiffer (2017 New Hanover grad): Went 3 of 5 from 3-point range for 9 points in 10 minutes of action in a 121-102 loss at Johnson University on Saturday.

Jr. long stick midfielder Tony Batchler, Guilford (2016 Cape Fear Academy grad): Helped the Quakers open the season with a win over Piedmont on Saturday by coming up with 4 ground balls and forcing 2 turnovers.

Fr. attack Brewer Warlick, William Peace (2018 Laney grad): Scored his first 2 career goals and scooped up 3 ground balls in a season-opening 12-8 victory over Marymount (Va.) on Saturday.

Soph. Ben Schmidt, Montreat (2015 Hoggard grad): At the Appalachian Athletic Conference Indoor Championship, Schmidt placed third in the 3,000 meter run (9:08.01) and third in the 5,000 meter run (15:47.20).

Soph. Jathan Deberry, UNC Pembroke (2017 North Brunswick grad): Finished second in the high jump (1.93 meters) at Saturday’s USC Indoor Open.

Fr. outfielder Savannah Capobianco, Louisburg (2018 Laney grad): Drove in 3 runs with a triple for her first collegiate hit to help the Hurricanes pick up a 12-7 victory over Richard Bland on Tuesday.

Jr. pitcher/infielder Preston Ellenberg, Catawba (2015 North Brunswick grad): Had a big game on Friday in a 7-2 win over Barton. Ellenberg allowed only 2 runs and struck out 7 in a complete game. She also went 2-for-3 with a walk and a home run.

Sr. infielder Schae Dickson, LIU Brooklyn (2015 Ashley grad): Went 3-for-4 with a 2-run home run and a walk in Friday’s 9-5 win against UMass in Kissimmee, Fla.

Fr. outfielder/infielder Kayla Miller, Pfeiffer (2018 West Brunswick grad): Collected her first 2 collegiate hits and drove in a run in a 20-0 win over Livingstone on Monday.

Sr. utility Charlene Thompson, Mount Olive (2015 Laney grad): Hit .462 (6-for-13) with 3 RBI and 4 runs in four victories.

Jr. infielder Keri White, Appalachian St. (2016 Topsail grad): In Saturday’s doubleheader sweep of N.C. A&T, White went 6-for-6 with a double, triple, 4 RBI, 5 runs and 2 stolen bases.

Soph. catcher Pearson Yopp, East Carolina (2017 Ashley grad): Yopp blasted a walkoff 3-run triple for her first collegiate hit on Friday to give the Pirates a dramatic 7-6 victory. ECU trailed 6-2 entering the seventh inning.

Fr. catcher/infielder Alleigh Himes, Winston-Salem St. (2018 North Brunswick grad): Blasted her fourth homer of the season in Friday’s 11-6 victory over Salem International.

R-Jr. Jada Bacchus, Mount Olive (2015 Ashley grad): Averaged 13.5 points and 8.5 rebounds in a pair of contests.

Soph. Ayonna Cotten, Cape Fear CC (2017 New Hanover grad): Helped the Sea Devils down Fayetteville Tech on Saturday by tying for a game-high with 19 points.

Fr. Azariah Fields, Mount Olive (2018 New Hanover grad): Finished with 7 points and 9 assists in Saturday’s 59-42 win over Converse. On Wednesday, Fields scored 11 points in a loss to Belmont Abbey.

Sr. Felecity Havens, Mount Olive (2014 Ashley grad): In games against Converse and Belmont Abbey, Havens scored 42 points and grabbed 14 rebounds.

Fr. Kapria Pressley, Brunswick CC (2014 New Hanover grad): In a 96-63 win over Patrick Henry on Sunday, Pressley went 15 of 25 from the field and 14 of 14 from the free throw line for 44 points. She also added 9 rebounds and 3 assists. On Saturday, she finished with 18 points, 9 rebounds, 5 assists and 5 steals in a 53-51 victory over Wake Tech.

Fr. defense/midfielder Meghan Eamma, Averett (2018 Laney grad): In her first collegiate game, Eamma scored 3 goals and added an assist in a 21-3 victory over Sweet Briar.

Soph. midfielder Kendall Goldblum, American (2017 Hoggard grad): Scored 3 goals and added an assist in Saturday’s 11-7 win at Old Dominion.

Soph. attack Elizabeth Peasley, Averett (2017 Laney grad): Finished with a team-best 9 goals and also dished out an assist in Saturday’s season-opening win over Sweet Briar.

Jr. Desire Brown, UNC Asheville (2016 Trask grad): Placed seventh in the 400 meter dash (58.80) at the Big South Conference Indoor Championship.

Fr. Jelonnie Smith, Appalachian St. (2018 South Brunswick grad): Finished seventh in the 400 meter dash with a time of 57.22 at the Sun Belt Conference Indoor Championship.
