Spot A Star is a list of the top individual performances of the week. Coaches are encourages to submit the names of their athletes who excelled on the field by 7 p.m. every Sunday. The list will be published each Monday.
Sam Garcia, Laney: Took a perfect game into the seventh inning against North Brunswick on Tuesday. He earned the victory by finishing with the following line: 6 2/3 innings, 2 runs, 3 hits and 7 strikeouts.
Reid Heath, North Brunswick: Scattered three hits and allowed only one run in a complete-game effort against Ashley on Thursday.
Walker Parks, North Brunswick: Led the Scorpions to a 2-1 victory over Ashley by hitting a double and making several key defensive plays at shortstop.
Aidan Smith, Topsail: UNCW signee hit .400 with a home run, three RBI and two runs. He also didn’t allow an earned run and struck out four in four innings on the mound.
Hayden Walsh, Topsail: In games against Laney, Ashley and West Brunswick, Walsh hit .444 with three RBI and two runs.
Max Johnson, Topsail: Won both Mideastern Conference matches contested. Shot a 2-over-par 74 on Monday at Compass Pointe and fired a 1-over-par 73 on Thursday at Carolina National.
Harrison Wierse, Topsail: Helped the Pirates tie for the low team score by shooting 75 and finishing second individually at Thursday’s match at Carolina National.
Nick Bedson, Topsail: Junior scored seven goals and dished out three assists in three games. He also scooped up five ground balls.
Eli Copeland, Topsail: In three games, Copeland scored 12 goals and dished out four assists while also scooping up 10 ground balls.
Owen Johnson, Cape Fear Academy: Made 23 saves in a tough loss to Ravenscroft School to increase his season save percentage to 66 percent.
Logan Meehan, Topsail: Anchored the defense and ended the week with seven ground balls, five caused turnovers and four assists.
Tyler Smith, Topsail: Won 27 of 36 face-offs and scooped up eight ground balls in three contests.
Reed Sweyer, Cape Fear Academy: Scooped up a team-best 12 ground balls in Thursday’s loss to Ravenscroft. The senior is averaging 10.6 ground balls through nine games.
Jake Volpe, Topsail: Finished the week with 10 goals, six assists and 11 ground balls.
Simms Balkcum and Landon Batts, Laney: Won the Mideastern Conference 4A doubles title with a pair of three-set victories.
Brock Boehling, Southeastern Homeschool: The freshman created and ran a six-week tennis ladder for 27 homeschooled middle school boys. It culminated with the top 16 players competing in a tournament at Empie Park.
Jake Ferner, Hoggard: Picked up a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 1 singles against rival New Hanover on Tuesday and then won the Mideastern Conference 4A singles tournament with two straight set wins on Thursday.
Westley Gaines and Griffith Waren, New Hanover: The defending 3A doubles state champions began their quest for a repeat by claiming the Mideastern Conference 3A title with a three-set victory over teammates Holland Baynard and Alan Dimock.
Marlon Neveu, Coastal Christian: Suffered a hard-fought 7-5, 6-0 loss at No. 3 singles against rival Cape Fear Academy on Monday.
John Hewlett West, New Hanover: Had a big week by picking up three-set singles wins against Hoggard and Cape Fear Academy and also claiming the Mideastern Conference 3A singles title.
BOYS TRACK & FIELD
Mahkel Henry, Pender: Still hasn’t lost in the 100 meters or 200 meters during conference meets. He currently has the fastest time in state in the 100 at the 1A level.
Malcolm McLean, Pender: Has been dominant in the high jump this year. His personal best of 6-4 has him ranked No. 1 in the state in 1A.
Alyssa Fizer, Hoggard: Finished the week with three goals, three assists and five ground balls. She also had nine draw controls on Thursday at Laney.
Taylor Frye, Hoggard: Helped lead a defense that allowed only six total goals in a pair of victories.
Riley Karren, Hoggard: After being called up from the JV team, Karren made 12 saves in Thursday’s 16-4 win at Laney.
Katie Witmer, Hoggard: In lopsided wins over South Brunswick and Laney, Witmer finished with 7 goals and eight ground balls.
Delaney Arthurs, Laney: Scored a pair of goals to help the Buccaneers secure a 6-2 win over North Brunswick on Tuesday.
Elizabeth Canfield, Topsail: Scored the game-winning goal in the 88th minute to lead the Pirates to a 2-1 victory over West Brunswick on senior night.
Alexa Collins, South Brunswick: Found the back of the net twice in Thursday’s 3-2 victory over New Hanover.
Carmen Dixon, South Brunswick: The senior co-captain had tremendous defensive efforts against Ashley and Hoggard.
Courtney Dwertman, Laney: Finished with a goal and an assist in a 6-0 victory at New Hanover on Monday and dished out an assist in Thursday’s 3-2 loss at Hoggard.
Maddie Gnolfo, Laney: Found the back of the net in wins over New Hanover (6-0 on Monday) and North Brunswick (6-2 on Tuesday).
Hailey Jones, South Brunswick: Had a great week defensively in contests against Ashley, Hoggard and New Hanover.
Vivian Jones, Laney: Lenoir-Rhyne signee scored a goal against North Brunswick and Hoggard and also had two assists against New Hanover.
Parker Ormsby, Laney: In three Mideastern Conference matches, the senior had two goals and two assists.
Hunter Pender, South Brunswick: Sophomore goalkeeper made some key saves in all three matches.
Chloe Wright, Laney: Freshman midfielder had two assists in Tuesday’s 6-2 win over North Brunswick.
GIRLS TRACK & FIELD
Lana Faith, Pender: Remained unbeaten in the high jump and triple jump in Coastal 8 Conference meets. Her personal best of 5-2 in the high jump is tied for first in the state at the 1A level.
Addy Howard, Topsail: Went 2-0 in the circle, allowing only two runs on 10 hits with 12 strikeouts in 14 innings against Laney and West Brunswick.Nee Nee Jordan, Topsail: Junior hit .444 (4-for-9) with three runs and three RBI in games against Laney, Ashley and West Brunswick.
Lexis Lewis, North Brunswick: In games against Laney and Ashley, Lewis went 2-for-4 with a walk, one double and two RBI.
Jesse Mathis, Hoggard: Tossed no-hitters against South Brunswick and Laney, finishing with a total of 29 strikeouts and only one walk in 13 innings. She also had a pair of doubles and three RBI at the plate.
Briana McMahan, North Brunswick: Earned the victory by allowing one earned run with two strikeouts in a complete game against Ashley.
Lauren Strnad, Topsail: In Thursday’s home win over West Brunswick, Strnad went 2-for-3 with three RBI.
