With the spring high school sports season complete, it’s time to reveal the All-Coastal Preps teams. Over the next week, you will get to know more about the players of the year while also seeing who made first and second team in boys golf, boys tennis, boys and girls track & field, boys and girls lacrosse, girls soccer, softball and baseball

The Coastal Preps Softball Hitter of the Year is senior Tristen Horrell of Laney and the Pitcher of the Year is senior Jesse Mathis of Hoggard.

Tristen’s Accomplishments

Horrell finished the season with an impressive .485 batting average as well as four doubles, nine home runs and 25 RBI.

The Gardner-Webb signee had ten multi-hit games and blasted a pair of home runs in victories over Swansboro on March 14 and North Brunswick on April 9.

When she wasn’t doing damage at the plate, Horrell also excelled in the circle. She went 11-5 with a 1.42 ERA and 119 strikeouts and only 29 walks in 98 1/3 innings.

Jesse’s Accomplishments

The unquestioned leader of a young Hoggard team, Mathis led the Vikings to their first trip to the 4A State Championship since 2001 by producing in the circle and at the plate.

As a pitcher, Mathis went 19-9 with a 1.51 ERA and 283 strikeouts in 185 1/3 innings. She finished with 10 or more strikeouts in 16 games, including a season-high 17 in an extra-inning victory over South View on April 1.

Mathis pitched three no-hitters, including two in one week against South Brunswick and Laney. In those games, she struck out 29 batters.

She also hit .308 with 11 doubles, one triple and 17 RBI.
