Best of Hoggard: Girls No. 3, 2 and 1

In an effort to determine the best 10 male and female athletes at each Wilmington school (Ashley, Cape Fear Academy, Coastal Christian, Hoggard, Laney, New Hanover and Wilmington Christian Academy), I selected a panel of qualified individuals to vote. The participants included: former and current coaches, administrators and ADs, media members and even fans. Each individual voted anonymously with their No. 1 athlete receiving 10 points, No. 2 athlete receiving 9 points and so on.

The next school to have their 10 top athletes revealed is Hoggard. A total of 16 people voted and the results will be released throughout the week.

Girls No. 3

Icess Tresvik (79 points and 3 first-place votes)

Class of 2021

A two-sport standout, Tresvik has accomplished great things on the basketball court and softball field and still has one more year left to make an even bigger impact. Through three years on the basketball court, Tresvik has scored 650 points to go along with 364 rebounds, 197 steals and 89 assists. A high-major Division I softball recruit, Tresvik has a career batting average of .399 with 13 doubles, 9 triples and 9 home runs in just over two seasons. She helped the Vikings reach the 4A State Championship Series as a sophomore by hitting .385 with a team-high 16 extra-base hits, 29 RBI and 33 runs. Tresvik took over the pitching duties last season and struck out 23 batters in 12 innings before the season was cut short due to the coronavirus.

“Icess made an immediate impact on both the basketball court and softball field as a freshman and has continued to improve in both sports throughout her time at Hoggard. She is not only one of the best athletes to come from Hoggard, but the entire county.” – Anonymous voter

Girls No. 2

Blair Barefoot (85 points and 1 first-place vote)

Class of 2019

Barefoot had an incredible career on the basketball court and soccer field. She finished her basketball career with 848 points, 287 assists, 260 steals and 209 rebounds. Barefoot also hit 89 career 3-pointers and made 225 free throws. She averaged 12.1 points, 4 steals, 3.6 assists and 2.3 rebounds as a senior to help the Vikings go 20-8.  Over her four years, the program had a record of 90-24. During her soccer career, Hoggard went 80-9-1 overall and 48-0-4 in the Mideastern Conference. As a senior goalkeeper, Barefoot allowed only four goals in 1,255 minutes and also scored five goals during limited action in the field to earn a spot on the N.C. Coaches Association All-State Team. Barefoot began her collegiate career as a member of the basketball team at Lenoir-Rhyne, but has transferred to UNCW and will join the soccer team this fall.

“Blair was a tremendous leader. Her teammates looked up to her because of the way she played and also the kind of person she was off the field or court. It was a privilege to watch her compete, because you knew she was going to give 100 percent 100 percent of the time. ” – Anonymous voter

Girls No. 1

Nanna Rivers (136 points and 7 first-place votes)

Class of 2000

Rivers received seven first-place votes to cruise to the top spot. A standout on the volleyball and basketball courts, Rivers was named the Mideastern Conference Player of the Year three times in volleyball and twice in basketball. She helped the basketball program go 100-14 and claim four straight regular season and tournament titles. She was nominated for the McDonald’s All American Team and participated in the East-West All-Star Game. Rivers continued her basketball career at N.C. State, where she helped the Wolfpack reach the Sweet 16 her freshman year. She played professionally in Holland, Germany, Finland and Poland before retiring. Rivers then spent several seasons as an assistant coach at Seton Hall and Monmouth and she currently is an NCAA referee.

“Nanna was explosive on the volleyball and basketball courts. She was cat quick with the ability to elevate above other players her size. As good a basketball player as she was, she could have played college volleyball as well.” – Anonymous voter
