FOOTBALL

Hoggard 49, South Brunswick 3

The Vikings rushed for 211 yards and forced a pair of turnovers in the dominant road victory that capped a perfect regular season.

Hoggard (7-0) has outscored its opponents 217-40. They’ve scored 40 or more points four times and haven’t allow more than 14 points in a game.  

After forcing a 3-and-out on the opening series of the game, the Vikings wasted little time asserting their dominance. Sam Williams ran for 38 yards on the first play of the ensuing drive and quarterback Gabe Johnson capped it with a 5-yard touchdown run.

Paul Roland doubled the lead with an 18-yard run. The advantage grew to 35-0 at halftime thanks to a pair of touchdown passes from Johnson to Chad Hollar (22 and 23 yards) as well as a 1-yard score from Issa Baggett.

Williams (52 yards) and Elijah Frazier (3 yards) added rushing touchdowns in the second half.

Johnson was 9 of 14 for 78 yards, while Williams led the ground attack with seven carries for 116 yards.

Hoggard had another impressive defensive performance. They allowed only 121 total yards, while defensive backs Jaxon King and Morgan Moulton each recovered a fumble. 

South Brunswick’s (3-3) only points came on a 28-yard field goal from Noah Harrell in the fourth quarter. 

Quarterback Roman Dilgard completed 6 of his 10 pass attempts for 62 yards. His favorite target was Miguel Miller, who hauled in five catches for 48 yards. Danny Parker recovered a fumble in the first half.

Hoggard has concluded the regular season and will now wait on its playoff seed. The Cougars host West Brunswick at 6 p.m. Friday.

GIRLS SOCCER

Ashley 1, Laney 0

Goalkeeper Maleah Bainer stopped all six shots she faced to earn the clean sheet and help keep the Screaming Eagles unbeaten. 

The lone goal was scored in the second half by UNCW signee McKenna Gardner. Both teams were missing players due to spring break.

Ashley (7-0) hosts West Brunswick on Wednesday at 5 p.m. Laney (4-2) welcomes Topsail at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Topsail 6, North Brunswick 2

The Pirates got two goals a piece from Myla West and Rachael Trifoli in the road win.

Topsail (3-3) plays at Laney on Wednesday night at 6. North Brunswick (1-6), which got two goals from UNC Asheville signee Daysha Chaney, travels to New Hanover at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Laney 8, Ashley 1

The Buccaneers won all six singles courts in straight sets and claimed two doubles matches to pick up the victory.

Will Adams won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, while Cohen Sechrist (No. 1), Sam Jo (No. 4) and Garrett Powell (No. 6) each dropped only three games. Laney (2-3) also got victories from Aidan Swivel (6-1, 6-3 at No. 3) and Patrick Regan (6-4, 6-2 at No. 5). 

Sechrist and Adams teamed up for an 8-1 win at No. 1 doubles, while Swivel and Jo earned a 9-8(3) win at No.  2.

Ashley (1-5) got an 8-3 victory at No. 3 from Jacob Baugher and Paul Baranoski. 

SOFTBALL

Pender 11, Lejeune 0

Pitchers Haley Schaeffer and Lillie Hansen combined on a one-hit shutout with 14 strikeouts and the Patriots pounded out 10 hits in the lopsided road victory.

Schaeffer struck out nine in her four hitless innings before handing the ball to Hansen. The freshman allowed one hit and fanned five batters in three innings.

Tyanna Holmes led the Pender (7-0) offense by going 3-for-5 with a double, stolen base, one RBI and one run. Jamiah Johnson collected two hits, stole a pair of bases and scored twice. Hansen drove in a pair of runs and Linde Cline scored three times.

The Patriots host East Carteret on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
