BOYS BASKETBALL

New Hanover 67, North Brunswick 25

A 30-point second quarter and a terrific defensive effort gave the Wildcats a dominant road victory in their Mideastern Conference opener.

New Hanover (3-3, 1-0) got 10 points a piece from Mikai Stanley, Maleec Myers and Dee Barnett. The first half was a bit sluggish with the visitors taking a 22-9 lead into the locker room.

The Wildcats wasted little time getting going in the third quarter, which ended with a 17-0 run over the final three minutes. Stanley scored all of his points in the final 1:50 of the period. 

Next up for New Hanover is a home game against Topsail at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. North Brunswick (1-6, 0-2) travels to Wallace-Rose Hill on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

Topsail 57, Laney 55

Gavin Ellis made a layup at the buzzer to give the Pirate a home victory in their Mideastern Conference opener.

Topsail (6-1, 1-0) got off to a quick start, leading 19-8 after the opening eight minutes. Laney (4-2, 1-1) took a 29-28 lead into the halftime locker room thanks to 6-1 run to end the second quarter.

Jamison Long buried a 3-pointer to tie the the score at 55-55. He finished with 14 points and seven assists, including finding Ellis for the game winner after getting double teamed.

Derek Gardner also scored 14 points for the Pirates, who play at New Hanover on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Laney (4-2, 1-1 Mideastern) travels to Jacksonville at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Hoggard 60, South Brunswick 35

A 21-point performance from junior guard Brady Rankin lifted the Vikings to a home win in their Mideastern Conference opener. 

Rankin sank four of Hoggard’s (5-1, 1-0 Mideastern) eight 3-pointers. They were also 10 of 14 from the free throw line.

The Vikings built a 22-5 lead after the opening quarter and continued pulling away. Nine players scored, including 10 from Sabastian Haidera and nine from Jacob Fisher. 

Jordan Jenrette scored eight points to lead South Brunswick (4-4, 1-1). They host Jacksonville on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

Hoggard visits Ashley on Tuesday night at 7:30.

West Brunswick 67, Ashley 55

A fast start put the Trojans on top and they never looked back in the home victory.

West Brunswick (4-2, 1-1 Mideastern) built an 18-8 advantage after the opening quarter thanks to six points from North Florida signee Jadyn Parker, who finished with a team-high 18.

The Trojans also got 15 points from J’vian McCray, who earlier in the day signed to play football at East Carolina. De’Andre Clarida chipped in eight points and Cal Collins finished with seven.

Sophomore Mikhail Pocknett scored 11 of his game-high 19 points in the third quarter, but the hole was too large for Ashley (3-2, 0-1 Mideastern) to overcome. Pocknett added 10 rebounds, four assist and three steals. Justin Thomason made three 3-pointers and finished with 11 points for the Screaming Eagles, who host Hoggard on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

West Brunswick hosts Starmount in the opening round of the Wing and Fish Holiday Classic on Friday at 6 p.m.

Coastal Christian 62, Liberty Christian Academy 50

A double-double of 25 points and 18 rebounds from Skyler Davies lifted the Centurions to a home victory.

The senior forward went 8 of 11 from both the field and free throw line and also added five assists and a pair of blocks.

Coastal Christian (6-4), which will play in the FCA Winter Classic at Mount Olive from Dec. 26-28, shot 40 percent from the field (21 of 52) and drained six 3-pointers. Luke Davenport had four of them on his way to 18 points. Chazz Banks chipped in eight points.

Trask 62, Hobbton 38

After falling behind 11-7 after the opening quarter, the Titans got rolling to earn their second win in as many days.

Trask (3-3) buried eight 3-pointers, including four from Watson Orr, who finished with 15 points. Will Berry had three 3’s en route to his game-high 20 points. 

An eight-point halftime lead grew to 23 after a huge 22-point third quarter. The Titans play at Richlands on Tuesday night at 7:30.

Durham Academy 59, Cape Fear Academy 51

Ivan Misic had a big night with 17 points, but it wasn’t enough as the Hurricanes were outscored 33-22 in the second half.

CFA (8-6) also got 14 points from Gavin Guion as well as 12 from Georges Lefebvre. They don’t play again until Jan. 3 when Covenant Day makes the trip for a 7 p.m. tip.

Living Water Christian School 63, Wilmington Christian Academy 22

WCA (2-6) hosts Liberty Christian Academy on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

North Brunswick 58, New Hanover 46

Laney 45, Topsail 22

Eight Buccaneers scored in another balanced effort that kept them unbeaten.

Morgan Adam scored all 10 of her points in the opening half to help Laney (6-0, 2-0 Mideastern) build a 22-13 halftime advantage. Regan Stewart canned three 3-pointer for nine points and Jackie Hill hit a pair of 3’s for her six points.

Topsail (6-2, 0-1), which plays at New Hanover at 6 p.m. Tuesday, got six points on two 3-pointers from Lilah Johnson as well as five points from Julia Sullivan. The Pirates were without the services of their leading scorer, Sydney Hartgrove. 

The Buccaneers travel to Jacksonville on Tuesday night at 6.

Ashley 59, West Brunswick 36

Saniya Rivers filled the stat sheet by finishing with a school-record 37 points, 19 points, eight steals and four assists. 

Ashley (3-0, 1-0 Mideastern), which hosts Hoggard on Tuesday at 6 p.m., also got six points a piece from Lexi Hinson and Annalise Saffo.

West Brunswick (1-7, 0-2) plays at North Myrtle Beach, S.C. at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Hoggard 51, South Brunswick 16

The Vikings picked up their second win in as many days by coming away with 25 steals, including seven from junior Icess Tresvik. 

Tresvik also scored a game-high 13 points on 5 of 9 shooting. Lola Lovitt added 10 points and five rebounds for Hoggard (7-0, 1-0 Mideastern), which pulled away in the second half by outscoring South Brunswick (1-8, 0-1) 32-4.

Freshman Anya Massey was 3 of 5 from the field and 2 of 2 from the free throw line en route to eight points. She also had four steals and four rebounds. 

The Vikings play at Ashley at 6 p.m. Tuesday, while the Cougars host Jacksonville on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Cape Fear Academy 41, Durham Academy 37

Chloe Kernan went 14 of 16 from the free throw line and buried four 3-pointers in a 32-point performance that gave the Hurricanes the home win.

CFA (9-3) led 25-10 at halftime and was able to survive a late push from the visitors. The Hurricanes are back in action Jan. 3 at home against Covenant Day at 5:30 p.m.

Coastal Christian 71, Liberty Christian Academy 25

Senior Brooke Barton scored a school record 35 points and completed the double-double with 13 rebounds and six steals to help the Centurions complete the season sweep.

Coastal Christian (5-4) scored 21 points in the opening quarter and tacked on 23 more in the second quarter to take a 44-19 lead into halftime.

Bella Lecci finished with 14 points and Bryna Barton added three points, six steals and 10 assists. The Centurions return to the court on Jan. 3 at Asheville Christian Academy at 5:30 p.m.

Trask 46, Hobbton 7

Junior Anisa Lewis scored 10 of her game-high 13 points in the first quarter to lift the Titans to a 21-0 lead.

Trask (4-2) increased its advantage to 37-0 at halftime. Madalyn White finished with 12 points and Leanna Pfieffer had eight. 

The Titans play at Richlands at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Living Water Christian School 62, Wilmington Christian Academy 12

Kyra Rickard and Rachel Bielaski each scored four points in the lopsided loss.

WCA (1-7) hosts Liberty Christian Academy on Tuesday night at 6.
