GIRLS BASKETBALL

Hoggard 64, Coastal Christian 20

The Vikings opened the game on a 16-0 run and continued to pull away in the lopsided home win that kept them unbeaten.

Nine players scored for Hoggard (3-0), led by 16 points from Icess Tresvik. The junior also added six of the team’s 26 steals.

Claire-Emma Britt chipped in 14 points and six rebounds and Lacy Lovitt finished with 11 points and three assists. The Vikings led 30-5 at halftime and didn’t allow a field goal until the third quarter.

Coastal Christian (4-2) got a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds from Brooke Barton as well as six points and eight steals from Maya Insley. 

Hoggard hosts Croatan on Friday at 7:30 p.m. The Centurions play at Ashley on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

Laney 65, Northside-Jacksonville 23

Thirteen Buccaneers scored in the dominant victory that saw them score at least 14 points in every quarter.

Taylor Chism led the way with 12 points and Reagan Stewart was close behind with 11. Laney (2-0), which hosts Jacksonville on Wednesday at 6 p.m., led 20-2 after the opening quarter and 35-15 at halftime. 

Kennedy Martin scored all eight of her points in the first half. Jada Simpson chipped in seven points.

North Brunswick 61, Dixon 35

Freshman Laney Scoggins scored a career-high 21 points to help the Scorpions cruise.

Scoggins scored 12 points in the opening two quarters to send North Brunswick (2-1) into the locker room with a 36-12 lead. The Scorpions also got 15 points from Lydia Bradshaw and seven from Taliyah Andews.

They welcome Wallace-Rose Hill at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Cape Fear Academy 53, Village Christian Academy 36

Senior Kaia Simpson carried the Hurricanes by matching Village Christian Academy with 36 points.

Simpson had 16 points in the first half and added 20 minute over the final 16 minutes. CFA (7-1) held a 10-point halftime advantage. 

Jay Washington added eight points and Elena Crvendakic finished with six. 

The Hurricanes host Arendell Parrott Academy on Friday night at 5:45.

Wilmington Christian Academy 36, Greenville Christian Academy 17

Thomas Davis picked up his first career coaching victory thanks to 15-point effort from Kyra Rickard.

WCA (1-2) led 10-3 after the opening eight minutes and never trailed. Rickard had eight points before halftime and seven more following it. Rachel Bielashi scored nine of her 11 points in the second half and Caitlyn Robinson added six.

The Patriots host Bethel Christian Academy at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Lumberton 51, New Hanover 34

Andrehya Shuford scored a team-best 11 points and Destiny Newkirk added five points and 13 rebounds in the road loss.

New Hanover (2-2) hosts Lumberton at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Swansboro 67, Trask 38

The Titans fell behind early and could never catch up.

Yolanda Scarbrough led the way with 13 points and Chykira Pickett added 12 for Trask, which visits South Brunswick on Friday at 6 p.m.

Laney 68, Northside-Jacksonville 58

The Buccaneers rallied from a nine-point halftime deficit to remain unbeaten. 

Marc McLaurin led all scorers with 18 points, including 15 in the second half. Laney (2-0) trailed 45-44 after three quarters before exploding for 24 points in the final eight minutes.

Lawrence Newkirk scored 13 points and Justin Clayton finished with 12. The Buccaneers, who welcome Jacksonville at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, went 29-for-35 from the free throw line.

Ashley 62, Wallace-Rose Hill 50

For the second day in a row, sophomore Mikhail Pocknett led the Screaming Eagles to a victory.

Pocknett led all scorers with 25 points, including 17 in the opening half, to help Ashley (2-0) build a 31-19 halftime advantage. Justin Thomason buried four of the team’s seven 3-pointers en route to 19 points.

Ashley (2-0), which hosts Coastal Christian on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m., also got 13 points from Khalil Jones.

Wilmington Christian Academy 70, Greenville Christian Academy 51

Greg Bowden scored a team-high 16 points and Bryce Bordeaux added 14 to give the Patriots their first victory of the season.

Hayden Naylor scored nine of his 11 points in the fourth quarter. WCA (1-2) also got eight points, all in the third quarter, from Derek Poe.

The Patriots trailed 28-26 at halftime before outscoring GCA 44-23 over the final 16 minutes. They are back in action Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. against Bethel Christian Academy.

Lumberton 53, New Hanover 51

The Wildcats were held scoreless for the final 3:05 in a heartbreaking road defeat.

Dee Barnett led New Hanover (2-1) with 13 points, while Scotty Deffinbaugh chipped in 12 and Abrahm Driver added 11. 

Next up for the Wildcats is a home game against Riverside on on Friday night at 7:30.

Village Christian Academy 62, Cape Fear Academy 55

Cape Fear Academy wasn’t able to hold onto a 30-25 halftime lead, falling to 5-5 on the season.

Jack McErlean led the way with 14 points and Emmanuel Bonsu finished with nine. The Hurricanes also got eight points a piece from Georges Lefebvre, Gavin Guion and Ivan Misic.

CFA welcomes Arendell Parrott Academy on Friday at 7:15 p.m.

Swansboro 80, Trask 71

The Titans made 23 field goals and went 20 of 29 from the free throw line, but it wasn’t enough. 

Watson Orr scored a game-high 23 points and Robert Pridgen and Will Berry each added 14 for Trask (0-2), which plays at South Brunswick on Friday at 7:30 p.m.

WRESTLING

Trask wins three matches

The Titans picked up wins over host Clinton (60-18), Greene Central (46-30) and Southern Wayne (60-18) during a quad meet.

Rogan Heath, Tyler Still, Kaven Garcia and Brian Perez each won all three of their matches.
