BOYS SWIMMING

Cape Fear Academy 146, Southeastern Homeschool 111

Cape Fear Academy won six events to earn the team victory in the meet at Brunswick Community College.

Andrew Basinger earned individual wins in the 200 IM (2:25.12) and 500 freestyle (5:46.24). He also anchored the victorious 400 freestyle relay (4:16.31) that featured Jack Glynn, Collin Hinson and William Lewis.

Lewis touched the wall first in the 200 freestyle (2:27.93), Glynn claimed the 50 freestyle in 25.20 and Dakota Snyder was victorious in the 100 backstroke (1:14.10).

Southeastern Homeschool’s Noah Rowland was the only competitor to win four events. He earned individual victories in the 100 butterfly (1:02.52) and 100 freestyle (54.67). Rowland teamed up with Elijah Bergland, Gideon Fields and Luke Novak to win the 200 medley (2:04.61) and 200 freestyle (1:41.07) relays.

Berglund also captured the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:07.06.

Cape Fear Academy 168, Southeastern Homeschool 106

Leah Murtagh, Taylor Crane and Avery Bishop all scored 18 points to help the Hurricanes secure the victory in the meet held at Brunswick Community College.

Cape Fear Academy won 10 of the 11 events. Murtagh, Crane and Bishop were a part of the victorious 200 medley (2:04.61) and 400 freestyle (4:19.81) relays.

Murtagh also won the 200 (2:18.22) and 500 (6:04.27) freestyles. Crane touched the wall first in the 200 IM (2:30.06) and 100 breaststroke (1:20.41), while Bishop claimed the 100 freestyle (59.90) and 100 backstroke (1:11.60).

The Hurricanes also won the 200 freestyle relay (Sara Paige Harvey, Liza Wells, Sydney Cortina and Kaite Meine) in 2:01.31. Elliot Wells was victorious in the 100 butterfly (1:08.52).

Southeastern Homeschool senior Joy Shaver won the 50 freestyle in 28:97.

VOLLEYBALL

New Hanover 3, West Brunswick 0

(25-10, 25-15, 25-9)

Senior standout Megan Tamisiea had another dominant performance by hitting .412 with a match-high 18 kills and 11 digs in the sweep.

New Hanover (5-1) hit .455 as a team and served 10 aces. Sarah Collins finished with nine kills and three aces and McKenzie Botbol added six kills and four aces. Setter Izzy Reeves dished out 33 assists, while libero Lily Walters had 10 digs. 

The Wildcats play at Hoggard on Tuesday night. West Brunswick (0-2) welcomes South Brunswick on Tuesday.

Ashley 3, South Brunswick 0

(25-14, 25-15, 25-11)

Senior libero and Lafayette signee Carson Grace Toomer set the school record for career digs on the final point of the match and the Screaming Eagles had no problem picking up the road victory.

Toomer now has 760 digs. Trinity Rosales set the previous record last season.

Ashley (4-1) used a 9-2 run midway through the opening set to build an 18-9 advantage. The second set followed the same script as the visitors led 13-10 before winning 12 of the final 17 points. Kelea Darago ended the set with an overpass kill.

The Screaming Eagles jumped out to a 10-3 lead in the final set and finished off the sweep when Bailey Teter put down a kill.

Next up for Ashley is a home match against Laney on Tuesday. South Brunswick (2-3) plays at West Brunswick on Tuesday.

Hoggard 3, Topsail 0

(25-17, 25-21, 25-11)

Hoggard had little trouble improving to 3-1 with a road victory.

Graceie Sistrunk led the way with 11 kills and four digs, while Ayla Johnson finished with 12 digs and seven kills. The Vikings also got seven kills and six digs from Martin-Maine Wrangell as well as 16 assists and five digs from Riley Lepley.

Addison Clark led Topsail (1-5) with six kills, while Carrina Shugarts chipped in five kills and 17 digs. Libero Aiden McGuire had a team-best 18 digs and freshman setter Nelly Grace Keziah dished out 11 assists.

Both teams will be back in action Tuesday. The Vikings will host New Hanover and the Pirates will play at North Brunswick.

Laney 3, North Brunswick 0

(25-9, 25-8, 25-16)

The Buccaneers cruised to a home win thanks to another outstanding defensive performance. Eleven players registered at least one dig.

Sophomore Mack Murnane had an outstanding performance with 14 assists, seven digs, four kills and two blocks. Jordan Juanes also had seven digs to go along with four kills. 

Laney (4-1) also got five kills and and three blocks from Brooke Osterhoudt as well as five blocks from Isabel Sandstrum.

Next up for the Buccaneers is a road match at Ashley on Tuesday. North Brunswick (0-5) welcomes Topsail on Tuesday.

Ashley 24, Laney 32

At Olsen Park

Laney sophomore Olivia Bufalini claimed the individual victory by 13 seconds, but the Screaming Eagles came out victorious in the team competition.

Bufalini completed the course in 18:46.17 to hold off Ashley’s Cecelia DiBlasi (18:59.70) and Paxton Chitty (19:10.97).

The Screaming Eagles also got solid performances from Cadence Eder (fifth in 19:27.81) and Natalie Fox (sixth in 19:36.60).

Laney’s Isabella Bufalini was fourth in 19:24.34 and Isabella Borelli finished seventh with a time of 19:40.50.

Hoggard 20, Topsail 42

At Long Leaf Park

The defending 4A state champions had no trouble defeating Topsail thanks to its depth.

Hoggard had seven of the top 10 finishers, including runner-up Molly Parker (18:15.62). Sloane Fleming-Hickey was third in 18:32.87, Paige Phillips was fifth in 19:36.64, Shea Hoffacker finished sixth in 20:01.09 and Erin Johnston crossed the finish line in 20:02.16 for a seventh-place finish.

Topsail’s Kaitlyn Obremski picked up her third straight victory to begin the season by completing the course in 17:38.78.

New Hanover’s Sophie Lundin was fourth with a time of 19:21.57, but the Wildcats didn’t have enough runners to accumulate a team score. 

Dixon 25, Richlands 30

At Trask

Trask sophomore Ainsley Heath finished fifth with a time of 23:04 and Pender senior Helena Moretz was seventh in 23:54, but neither team had enough competitors to register a team score.

BOYS CROSS COUNTRY

Ashley 19, Laney 41

At Olsen Park

The Screaming Eagles cruised to the victory by placing seven runners in the top 10.

Junior Isaiah Arnold easily won by completing the course in 15:56.66. Ashley also got top-five finishes from William Marhold (third in 16:44.23), Isaiah Perry (fourth in 16:54.85) and Joseph Langhorst (fifth 17:21.09). Bradley Kreiger was sixth with a time of 17:24.38.

Joseph Moran was Laney’s top finisher. He was the runner-up after crossing the finish line in 16:22.62.

Hoggard 17, Topsail 58, New Hanover 59

At Long Leaf Park

Hoggard had the top four runners, including winner Brennen Pierce (16:33.47), to pick up the team victory.

Luke Ward was second in 16:39.31, Andrew Whitehead finished third with a time of 16:43 and Luke Adams was fourth in 17:08.30. The Vikings also got a seventh-place finish from Will Clancey (17:41.45).

Topsail’s James Campbell completed the course in 17:35.12 for a fifth-place finish and New Hanover freshman Colin Egan was sixth in 17:41.26.

Trask 28, Dixon 34, Pender 65

At Trask

The host Titans got a 1-2 finish from sophomore Martin Lopez (19:22) and junior John Roberts (19:33) to earn the team victory.

Samuel Scott was fifth with a time of 20:03 and Louis Velasco finished eighth in 20:35.

Pender got a sixth-place finish from senior Isiac Lewis (20:08).
