BOYS WRESTLING

Swiss Bear Classic

at New Bern

Nine Laney wrestlers earned top-four finishes in their respective weight classes to help the team rolled to a victory.

The Buccaneers scored 200.5 points, which was 75.5 points better than runner-up Croatan. 

Avery Buonocore (145 pounds), Noah Thomas (152), Alex Hopper (182), Trystan Richardson (195) and Mason Blue (220) claimed titles.

Buonocore never made it to the third period in his four victories, which all came by pin. He needed only 33 seconds to put Dixon’s Justin Root on his back in the final.

After recording back-to-back pins, Thomas earned a 9-4 decision over Swansboro’s Theodore Yager in the championship bout.

Hopper remained unbeaten on the season with four pins – two in the first period and two in the second period.  

Richardson had a dominant run at 195, pinning all four of his opponents in the first period. He decked Pamlico’s Ryan Baker in 1:00 in the final.

The championship bout at 220 featured a pair of area wrestlers. Blue was able to hold on for a 6-3 decision over South Brunswick’s Garrett Frazier. Blue reached the final with three pins, while Frazier had a tech fall, pin and decision.

Laney’s Jacob Rosen (170) and South Brunswick’s Ethan McCullough (113) also reached the final, but came up short. 

Rosen lost to Kamar Brown of Northside-Jacksonville by a score of 3-1, while McCullough suffered a 5-0 loss to Jacksonville’s Cole Hunt.

Pinecrest Duals

at Pinecrest

Hoggard’s Pierce White (195) and Asef Ismail (285) went 5-0 on the day.

White improved his record to 11-1, while Ismail remained unbeaten with a record of 12-0.

The Vikings won three matches and suffered two losses.

GIRLS WRESTLING

Swiss Bear Classic

at New Bern

Laney’s Elaina Pollock and South Brunswick’s Lily Prendergast cruised to titles.

Pollock had two pins in less than a minute as well as two tech falls at 185 pounds, while Prendergast won all four of her matches at 107 by pin in less than 1:30.

Laney placed second as a team with 97 points, while South Brunswick was seventh with 34 points.

Mia Kiser (120), Sirian Orellana (126), Cynthia Orellana (132) and Ay’Seante Ross (165) all finished in second place to earn important points for the Buccaneers.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Chatham Homeschool 77, No. 12 Southeastern Homeschool 58

The Cardinals managed only four points in the second quarter to fall behind 42-19 at halftime in the road loss.

Blake Batts and Thomas Sousa had big games for Southeastern Homeschool (1-5, 1-1 NCHEAC East). Batts scored a team-high 21 points, while Sousa added 16 points on 8 of 10 shooting.

Next up for the Cardinals is a road game at East Wake Homeschool on Monday at 6:30 p.m.
