No. 8 Cape Fear Academy 44, No. 12 Coastal Christian 14

In her final home contest, senior Bella Erichsen scored a game-high 18 points to cap an unbeaten season in Coastal Rivers Conference play.

CFA (8-12, 6-0) scored 16 points in the second quarter to build a 23-7 halftime lead. Macy Stengle chipped in eight points, while Kylie Petrides finished with seven.

Ella Rose Reese paced Coastal Christian (5-15, 0-6) with six points, all in the fourth quarter.

The teams will square off again Thursday at 3:30 p.m. in the semifinals of the conference tournament. The game will be played at Coastal Christian.

No. 1 Hoggard 50, No. 3 Ashley 43 (OT)

The Vikings clinched the Mideastern Conference title despite shooting just 31 percent (13 of 42) from the field.

Senior point guard Anya Massey drained four 3-pointers and went 7 of 7 from the free throw line en route to her game-high 19 points, which all in the second half and overtime. 

Hoggard (20-2, 12-0 Mideastern), which trailed 13-11 at halftime, also got 12 points from Tristan Shivers as well as seven points and eight rebounds from Anna-Hollis Pitt.

Ashley (15-5, 9-3) freshman Brianna Stanley banked in an incredible one-footed 3-pointer at the buzzer to send the game to overtime.

Stanley scored 17 points, while Anna Benfield added 11 points and seven rebounds.

Next up for the Vikings is a road game at Laney on Tuesday at 6 p.m. The Screaming Eagles host Topsail at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

No. 2 Topsail 55, No. 5 New Hanover 37

Nine players scored, led by 11 points from Lilah Johnson, in the win that gave the Pirates sole possession of second place in the Mideastern Conference.

Topsail (17-5, 10-2) can clinch the No. 2 seed for the conference tournament with a win at Ashley on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

Emmy Clark chipped in 10 points, while Carolina Coria and Rhianna Garmendiz both finished with eight. Coria dished out a team-best five assists, and Garmendiz grabbed eight rebounds.

New Hanover’s (9-8, 6-6) Jy’maya Rayford scored all 11 of her points in the second half.

The Wildcats return home to host West Brunswick at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

No. 6 West Brunswick 44, No. 9 North Brunswick 23

Morgan Bellamy and Jahyra Mastry each finished with 11 points to help the Trojans sweep the season series.

West Brunswick (9-9, 4-8 Mideastern) stormed out to a 16-2 lead after the opening eight minutes. Hailey Woodard scored all seven of her points at the free throe line.

Jada Burnett led the way for North Brunswick (5-15, 1-11) with eight points.

The Trojans play at New Hanover on Tuesday night at 6:30. The Scorpions travel to South Brunswick at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

No. 4 Laney 50, No. 11 South Brunswick 12

The Buccaneers allowed only two points over the final three quarters to cruise at home.

Aniece Lewis and Jada Simpson led all scorers with 11 points. Laney (13-8, 6-6 Mideastern) also got nine points a piece from Piper Conklin and Katelyn Lucera. 

South Brunswick (1-16, 0-12) was led by Mia Hughes, Madison Mitchell and Kira Beardsley. They all finished with four points.

Both teams return to action Tuesday at 6 p.m. The Buccaneers host Hoggard, while the Cougars welcome North Brunswick.

Thomas Watkins connected on a 3-pointer just before halftime, and the Hurricanes carried that momentum into the second half to cruise past their rival at home

Watkins’ shot sent CFA (16-7, 3-3 Coastal Rivers) into the locker room with a 26-12 lead.

The advantage grew to 47-14 after a dominant third quarter that featured seven points from Saransh Padhy. The senior forward led all scorers with 13 points. 

Markus Pastrocic-Straun and Angelo Vega each chipped in eight points, while Simeon Jeffers and Watkins both finished with seven.

Coastal Christian (10-18, 1-5 Coastal Rivers) got eight points a piece from Aidan Davies and Jay Forrester.

Both teams will be back in action Thursday in the semifinals of the conference tournament at Coastal Christian. The Hurricanes will take on Harrells Christian Academy, while the Centurions meet top-seeded Fayetteville Academy.

No. 7 North Brunswick 81, No. 8 West Brunswick 73 (2 OT)

The Scorpions snapped an 11-game losing streak to their county rival that dated all the way back to 2015.

North Brunswick (9-12, 4-8 Mideastern) trailed 57-50 with two minutes remaining in regulation before going on a quick 7-0 run, which was capped by a three-point play from Terry Hood with just under a minute to play.

West Brunswick (8-12, 3-9) took a two-point lead on a layup from JJ Cobb with 11 seconds left, but the Scorpions raced the ball down the court and got a putback from Hood, who was also fouled with three seconds on the clock.

Hood missed the free throw and the game went to overtime. The Trojans had a chance to win in the first extra session, but Aiden Brown missed a pair of free throws with 2.5 seconds left. 

North Brunswick scored the first six points of the second overtime and were never threatened. 

Hood was one of three Scorpions to reach double figures. He scored 16 points. Malakhi Daniels had 20 and Isaic Nipper finished with 19.

Cobb paced West Brunswick with 19 points. Kevon Daniels and Cylil Lee both scored 17, while Jordan McCall chipped in 14.

Both teams play on the road Tuesday. North Brunswick visits South Brunswick at 7:30 p.m. The Trojans play at New Hanover at 8 p.m.

No. 2 Hoggard 44, No. 6 Ashley 41

For the second time this week, the Vikings had to rally from a halftime deficit to avoid an upset.

Hoggard (17-5, 11-1 Mideastern) scored the first basket of the game, but Ashley (9-12, 5-7) countered with an impressive 19-0 run that was capped by a putback from Treyvon Doughty with 6:38 left in the second quarter.

The Vikings trimmed the deficit to seven points at halftime and four after three quarters. A fastbreak layup from Malakahi West gave the visitors a 35-33 lead with 4:38 to play. They wouldn’t trail again.

Jack Voth finished with 15 points. Parker Crittenden, Shane Hawkins and CJ Kornegay all chipped in seven.

Quinn Bentley led the Screaming Eagles with 15 points, include three 3-pointers. Coen Locklear and Trent Smith each had six points.

Hoggard plays at Laney on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. Ashley welcomes Topsail at 8 p.m. Tuesday.

No. 3 Laney 59, No. 9 South Brunswick 43

Josh Helms continued his stellar play by pouring in 21 points to give the Buccaneers a bounce-back victory.

Over the past five games, Helms is averaging 18 points. 

Laney (19-3, 9-3) trailed 26-22 at halftime before scoring 37 points over the final 16 minutes. 

Khalil Genwright added 15 points and seven rebounds, while Jarrod Vaughn finished with eight points and six rebounds.

The Buccaneers host Hoggard at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. South Brunswick (5-15, 2-10) returns home to take on North Brunswick on Tuesday night at 7:30. 

No. 1 New Hanover 72, No. 12 Topsail 39

Three Wildcats reached double figures and 11 scored in the lopsided road win.

Reece Tushingham scored all 11 of his points in the second half. Zeus Batts and Nolan Billings each finished with 10 points. New Hanover (18-2, 12-0 Mideastern) also got nine points from Jahiem Gibbs.

The Wildcats will try to remain unbeaten in league play when they host West Brunswick at 8 p.m. Tuesday. Topsail (3-18, 3-10) travels to Ashley on Tuesday at 8 p.m.

No. 5 Trask 76, South Columbus 56

A double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds from sophomore Sherrod Henderson lifted the Titans to the victory that also clinched the Waccamaw Conference title.

Trask (18-4, 8-0) has a four-game lead over West Columbus and Whiteville with two games remaining.

Myron Mckoy added 17 points, eight assists and five steals. Jamiel Davis (13 points) and Isaac Turner (11 points) also reached double figures.

The Titans welcome Whiteville at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

No. 14 Wilmington Christian Academy 50, Thomas Academy 23

The Patriots made eight 3-pointers, including three from Caleb Eckhardt, to roll at home in a nonconference showdown.

Eckhardt finished with 11 points, seven rebounds and five steals. Trey Pierce paced WCA (7-11) with 14 points, while Calloway Upchurch chipped in six points and a team-high 11 rebounds.

Next up is a road game at Living Water Christian on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

GIRLS WRESTLING

NCHSAA State Championship

Sophomore Elaina Pollock of Laney was the lone area participant to reach the final.

Pollock (27-2) opened with a 23-second pin over Alyssa Riker of Jack Britt in the opening round at 185 pounds. She registered two more pins to advance to Saturday’s championship, where she will take on Enka’s Emma Warren (22-2).

South Brunswick’s Lily Prendergast and Trask’s Lauren Hall will both wrestle for third place.

Prendergast reached the semifinals at 100 pounds before suffering an 11-1 defeat to Mount Airy’s Jamie Hearl. The junior bounced back nicely with a pin to stay alive.

Hall also advanced to the semifinals with a pair of victories at 132. After getting pinned by unbeaten Brianna Deleon of Weddington, Hall reached the third-place bout with a pin of her own.

GIRLS SWIMMING

3A East Regional

At Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary

West Brunswick’s Aley Williams cruised to a victory in the 100 breaststroke with a new Brunswick County record time of 1:11.06.

Williams smashed the previous record of 1:12.13, which was set by West Brunswick’s Caroline Ruck on Dec. 14, 2017. 

The Trojans were second as a team with 230 points, behind only Greenville Rose (394). South Brunswick placed fifth with 160 points.

Williams was joined by Tess Caron, Mary Davis and Ava Williams on the second-place 200 medley (2:01.31) and 200 freestyle (1:48.02) relays. 

The top six finishers in each event from all three regionals automatically qualified for next week’s state championship. The next six fastest times will also qualify. 

Davis was second in the 200 IM (2:22.71) and third in the 100 backstroke (1:03.83), while Caron (1:10.40 in 100 backstroke) and Ava Williams (1:01.09 in 100 freestyle) both placed sixth.

The Trojans also got excellent performances from Kaylee Jarvis in the 500 freestyle (fourth in 5:56.65) and 200 IM (fifth in 2:30.56).

South Brunswick’s Kennedy Gordon, AJ Jackson, Keira Stegman and Meghan Ulevich were third in both the 200 medley (2:07.02) and 200 freestyle (1:50.77) relays.

Gordon finished third in the 100 butterfly (1:08.67) and fourth in the 100 breaststroke (1:17.17). Jackson placed third in the 500 freestyle (5:39.00) and fourth in the 200 freestyle (2:06.08).

Cape Fear Academy 121, Coastal Christian 74, Fayetteville Academy 9

Coastal Rivers Conference Championship

Senior Leah Murtagh and junior Sydney Cortina each secured four victories to help the Hurricanes claim the title.

Both swimmers were joined by Sara Paige Harvey and Katie Meine on the winning 200 freestyle (1:55.01) and 400 freestyle (4:30.03) relays.

Murtagh’s individual victories came in the 100 backstroke (1:11.81) and 200 IM (2:31.26). Cortina touched the wall first in the 50 freestyle (28.44) and 100 freestyle (1:04.43).

The Hurricanes also got a win from Harvey in the 100 butterfly (1:31.21).

Coastal Christian’s Maggie Dorosko had a terrific meet, earning individual victories in the 200 freestyle (2:11.45) and 500 freestyle (6:01.97).

Dorosko swam the butterfly leg on the 200 medley relay, which opened the event with a win in 2:14.14. Joining her were Hannah Grassi (backstroke), Reegan DeVries (breaststroke) and Marissa Short (freestyle).

DeVries claimed the 100 breaststroke in 1:21.99.

BOYS SWIMMING

3A East Regional

At Triangle Aquatic Center in Cary

South Brunswick finished in third place with 217 points.

Croatan won the meet with 373 points, followed by West Carteret with 282. 

The top six finishers in each event from all three regionals automatically qualified for next week’s state championship. The next six fastest times will also qualify. 

The Cougars got a runner-up finish from Walker Jenkins, Chance Mason, Cade Needham and Evan Sevast in the 200 freestyle relay (1:36.10).

Mason, Needham, Sevast and Patrick Boldt were third in the 400 freestyle relay (3:35.53).

Needham had a outstanding meet. He was second in the 500 freestyle with a Brunswick County record time of 4:57.78. Needham also placed third in the 200 freestyle (1:48.67).

Mason finished third in the 200 IM (2:14.71) and sixth in the 100 freestyle (52.60), while Sevast was sixth in the 100 butterfly (59.43).

Cape Fear Academy 117, Fayetteville Academy 68, Coastal Christian 52

Coastal Rivers Conference Championship

The Hurricanes rolled to the title by winning seven of the 11 events. 

Lane Durham and Ted Jones both had four victories, while Henry Steven added a pair.

All three were joined by Ray McDonald on the 200 freestyle relay, which finished in a time of 1:42.21.

Durham, Jones, McDonald and James Lewis ended the meet with a win in the 400 freestyle relay (3:54.34).

The individual victories for Durham came in the 100 backstroke (58.06) and 100 butterfly (56.11). They were both season-best times. 

Jones claimed the 100 freestyle (52.68) and 200 freestyle (1:58.79), while Steven touched the wall first in the 100 breaststroke (1:11.81).

Sophomore Laith Ausband of Coastal Christian won the 50 freestyle in a time 23.47.
