AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL

Brunswick Post 543 4, Wilmington Patriots 2

Pitchers Freddy Wooten (Southeastern CC) and Josh Surigao (North Myrtle Beach, S.C.) combined to record seven strikeouts and allow only three hits in the home victory.

Brunswick (2-1, 2-1 Area II) grabbed the lead for good in the bottom of the first inning when Wooten led off with an infield hit and eventually scored on a wild pitch.

The lead grew to 4-0 after three innings. Brunswick loaded the bases with no outs. A groundout from Luke Dilgard (South Brunswick) plated Tommy Bost (North Brunswick). 

Later in the inning, Max Crawford laced a two-out single to left field that allowed Jaylend Clemmons (South Brunswick) and Roman Dilgard (Brunswick CC) to cross the plate.

Wooten earned the victory by scattering three hits and recording one strikeout in four innings. Surigao had six strikeouts in his three innings of work.

Wilmington (0-1, 0-1) scored both its runs in the top of the seventh inning. Nick DiSanti (Wilmington Christian Academy) walked and scored on a passed ball.

Hayden Naylor (Wilmington Christian Academy) reached on a hit by pitch and eventually came around to score on an error.

Three Wilmington pitchers – Naylor, Jackson Moore (Topsail) and Christian Davis (Topsail) – allowed only three hits and struck out seven batters.

Brunswick hosts Beulaville Post 511 on Thursday at 7 p.m. in the resumption of last week’s postponed game. Brunswick leads 1-0 in the top of the second inning.

Wilmington plays at Hamlet Post 49 on Thursday night at 7.

Hope Mills Post 32 12, Port City Post 545 0 (5 innings)

Port City managed only three hits in a mercy-rule road loss.

Cam McCotter (Laney) hit a two-out double in the second inning. He advanced to third base on a wild pitch, but was stranded there. McCotter also worked a walk. 

Port City’s (1-3, 1-3 Area II) other hits came from Dalton MacCallum (Laney) and Luka Rumora (Laney). 

Next up for Port City is a home game against Wilmington Post 10 on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

LADY LEGION SOFTBALL

Chandler Mobley (East Duplin) scored the game-winning run on a wild pitch with two outs in the bottom of the fifth inning to keep Jacksonville unbeaten.

Mobley worked a four-pitch walk, stole second base and advanced to third on a wild pitch.

Jacksonville (3-0, 3-0 Area II) was led offensively by Zoey Vincent (Topsail) and Reagan Stapleton (Richlands), who both finished 2-for-3 with run scored. 

Vincent’s RBI single in the bottom of the second inning increased Jacksonville’s lead to 3-1. 

Madalyn White (Trask) went 1-for-2 with a walk, RBI and one run scored for Port City (2-1, 2-1). Sawyer Rigdon (Ashley) and Hannah Mills (Trask) scored the other runs.

Jacksonville scored three runs in each of the first two innings to build an insurmountable lead and sweep the doubleheader.

Tori Dennis (Richlands) had a big game at the plate for Jacksonville (4-0, 4-0 Area II) by finishing 3-for-3 with three runs scored. Zoey Vincent (Topsail) went 1-for-3 with an RBI and one run scored. 

Makenzie Goin (Richlands) earned the victory by allowing four hits and recording four strikeouts in a complete game.

Port City’s (2-2, 2-2) lone run came in the top of the fifth inning. Madalyn White (Trask) ripped a one-out triple and scored on an RBI groundout from Sawyer Rigdon (Ashley).

Port City plays a doubleheader at Southport Post 551 on Wednesday beginning at 6:30 p.m.
