SOFTBALL

Laney 6, South Lenoir 5 (8 innings)

Sophomore Kendyl Elliott belted a game-winning solo home run in the top of the eighth inning and also earned the victory in the circle.

Laney (3-2) led 4-1 after the opening inning and finished with 10 hits. Elliott went 3-for-4 with a double and four RBI. Sarah Manis also had three hits, including a triple, and scored a run. Faith Milligan finished 2-for-4 with a double.

The Buccaneers host Rosewood on Friday at 6 p.m.

Freedom Christian Academy 4, Hoggard 2

Icess Tresvik had a pair of doubles, one RBI and one run, but the Vikings managed only one other hit in the home loss.

Hoggard (1-2) scored a run in the bottom of the first inning and added its other run in the fifth. Amber Small had a single and a run. Tresvik struck out four and didn’t allow a hit in two scoreless innings.

The Vikings host West Brunswick on Friday at 6 p.m. in the Mideastern Conference opener for both sides.

Trask 12, Clinton 2

The Titans improved to 2-0 on the season with the comfortable win.

No other information was provided. Trask hosts Spring Creek at 5 p.m. Friday.

GIRLS SOCCER

Hoggard 3, Myrtle Beach (S.C.) 0

For the fourth straight game, the Vikings came away with a shutout victory.

Lilly Smiley opened the scoring on a free kick in the 47th minute and the lead doubled in the 55th minute when Avery Lemley found Sophie Southerland for a goal.

Gracie Piepmeyer headed home the final goal off a service from Molly Phelps with three minutes remaining.

Riley Manning and Phoebe Simpson combined for three saves to preserve the shutout. Hoggard (4-0), which has outscored its four opponents 16-0, opens Mideastern Conference play at home against Laney on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

South Brunswick 2, Topsail 1

The Cougars scored once in each half to open the season and Mideastern Conference play with a road win.

No other information was provided. South Brunswick (1-0, 1-0) hosts Pender on Thursday at 6 p.m. and Topsail (0-4, 0-2) plays Cleveland at The Brittany Tournament in Wilson at 11:40 a.m. Saturday. 

BOYS LACROSSE

Cape Fear Academy 16, Arendell Parrott Academy 7

Sophomore goalkeeper Owen Johnson made 12 saves and the Hurricanes got scoring contributions from six players in the victory.

Michael Rosen led the way with five goals and one assist and Colin Moore finished with a hat trick to go along with an assist. CFA (1-1) also got three goals from Gavin Bahner and two goals and four assists from Caelin Bahner.

Next up for the Hurricanes is a road match at Ashley on Thursday at 6 p.m.

West Brunswick 17, South Brunswick 9

From Tuesday

The Trojans opened the season with a victory thanks to four-goal performances from William McRainey, Bailey Gentile and Ryan Wagner.

Wagner also won 11 of 13 faceoffs and dished out four assists. McRainey finished with three assists for West Brunswick (1-0), which plays at North Brunswick at 6 p.m. Thursday.

South Brunswick (0-2) hosts North Brunswick on Friday at 6 p.m.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Cape Fear Academy 17, West Brunswick 12

The Cavanaugh sisters – Devon and Abby – accounted for 12 of CFA’s goals in the home victory.

Devon finished with a team-high seven goals and three assists and Abby chipped in five goals and three assists. Laura Kate Lindstrom added a pair of goals for CFA (2-0), while Pearce Lewis, Lucy Dimock and Audrey Dahl each had one.

The Hurricanes play at New Hanover at 6 p.m. Friday.

BOYS TENNIS

Coastal Christian 7, Ashley 2

Marlon Neveu set the tone with a 6-0, 6-0 victory at No. 1 singles and the Centurions added four more singles wins to clinch the match before doubles took place.

Coastal Christian (2-0) also got victories from Josh Montague (6-0, 6-2 at No. 2), Josh Robertson (6-1, 6-2 at No. 3), Aiden Mason (6-1, 6-2 at No. 5) and Julian Wright (7-5, 6-2 at No. 6).

In doubles, Neveu and Montague won 8-2 at No. 1 and Robertson and Tyler Spivey were victorious by the same score at No. 2.

Ashley (0-2) got a three-set win from Jacob Baugher at No. 4 singles and an 8-7 victory at No. 3 doubles from Paul Baranoski and Seth Olanovich.

Myrtle Beach (S.C.) 4, Cape Fear Academy 2

Evan Das rallied for a 3-6, 6-4, 10-4 victory at No. 3 singles and CFA also got a 7-5, 6-2 win at No. 2 doubles from JR Johnston and Anders Ljung in the season-opening road loss. 

The Hurricanes will try to bounce back on Tuesday when they host Epiphany School at 4 p.m.

BASEBALL

Trask 4, Clinton 2 (Game suspended in 7th inning)

The Titans were closing in on their first victory of the season when the game was suspended due to lightning.

The game will resume where it was stopped when the teams meet at Trask on Feb. 23.
