BASEBALL

Wakefield 9, Hoggard 7 (9 innings)

Sloppy play in the field doomed the Vikings in a nonconference home loss.

Pitchers Ben Whitehurst, Sam Fox and Brody Sumner allowed only three hits and struck out 15 batters, but Hoggard (0-2) committed eight errors and allowed 11 stolen bases. 

The Vikings jumped out to a 6-1 lead after two innings thanks to a pair of doubles from senior catcher Jackson Vargo that drove in five runs. 

Wakefield tied the game in the top of the third by capitalizing on a two walks, a hit by pitch and a pair of Hoggard errors.  The Wolverines grabbed the lead on a ground out in the top of the sixth inning, but the Vikings evened the score in the bottom of the frame when Korbin Pettigrew led off with a single, stole second and third bases and crossed the plate on a throwing error from the catcher. 

A pair of wild pitches allowed the final two Wakefield runs to score in the ninth.

Pettigrew and Jason Culley each scored two runs for Hoggard, which opens Mideastern Conference play at West Brunswick on Friday 6 p.m.

Southern Wayne 6, New Hanover 5

The Wildcats fell to 1-1 on the young season with a road defeat.

No other information was provided. New Hanover (1-1) hosts Havelock at 5 p.m. Tuesday.

GIRLS SOCCER

Ashley 3, Sanderson 0

At Battle at the Beach in Jacksonville

UNCW commit McKenna Gardner scored a pair of goals to lift the Screaming Eagles to a season-opening victory.

Ashley’s (1-0) other goal came from Ava McKoy. Goalkeepers Maleah Bainer and Molly Maguire shared the clean sheet.

Next up for the Screaming Eagles is a home contest against Coastal Christian on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Laney 2, Fuquay-Varina 0

At Battle at the Beach in Jacksonville

The Buccaneers opened the season with a shutout victory thanks to three saves from senior goalkeeper Ashley Ellington. 

Zoe Pitts had a goal and an assist. Her goal was assisted by Maddie Gnofolo and she assisted on Delaney Arthurs’ goal. The back line of Gnofolo, Taylor Chism, Grace Malloy and Chloe Wright also had a dominant performance.

Laney (1-0) plays Heritage on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Dixon.

New Hanover 3, West Brunswick 0

Freshman Sloane Woolwine scored her fourth goal of the season and the Wildcats opened Mideastern Conference play with a road victory. 

Frances Coleman and Cassidy Payne also scored for New Hanover (3-0, 1-0). Molly Tetterton and Gianna Holden both dished out an assist.

The Wildcats play at Swansboro on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

Southeastern Homeschool 5, North Wake Homeschool 0

Brooke Moyers stopped all seven shots she faced to earn the clean sheet and the Cardinals opened the season with a road victory.

Haneen Wilson scored a pair of goals, while Micaiah Wilson, Kade Seay and Laura Beckett each added one. Southeastern Homeschool (1-0, 1-0) plays at Wilmington Christian Academy on March 17 at 4:30 p.m.

BOYS TENNIS

Hoggard 9, South Brunswick 0

The Vikings dropped only four games in singles and won all three doubles matches 8-0 to cruise to a season-opening win.

Noah Berg (No. 1), Dalton Feldman (No. 4), Varun Varadarajan (No. 5) and Aidan Schraff (No. 6) all won 6-0, 6-0. Quaid Sutherland dropped only one game at No. 3 and Ben Boyd won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 2.

Hank Hudson and Ryan Boaz (No. 1), Jake Morris and Brad Boaz (No. 2) and Logan Bolduc and Jacob Triemstra (No. 3) were Hoggard’s (1-0, 1-0) doubles winners. 

The Vikings host Laney on Tuesday at 4 p.m., while South Brunswick (0-2, 0-2) plays at Coastal Christian on Monday at 4 p.m.

Topsail 9, Ashley 0

Justin Koehler (No. 3), Josh Martin (No. 4) and Nolan Hill (No. 6) all won their singles matches 6-0, 6-0 and the Pirates were dominant in their season opener.

Topsail (1-0, 1-0 Mideastern) also got singles wins from Alex Hornthal (6-0, 6-1 at No. 1), Connor Hill (6-0, 6-1 at No. 2) and Brayden Wells (6-0, 6-1 at No. 5).

In doubles, Hornthal and Connor Hill teamed for an 8-0 victory at No. 1. Martin and Wells also won 8-0 at No. 2 and Koehler and Nolan Hill lost only three games at No. 3.

The Pirates play at West Brunswick on Tuesday at 4 p.m. Ashley (0-1, 0-1) hosts Coastal Christian at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

SOFTBALL

Topsail 14, North Johnston 7

A nine-run bottom of the sixth inning, which featured back-to-back home runs from Sydney Hartgrove and Tyesha Williams, proved to be the difference.

Hartgrove blasted a grand slam to left field to increase Topsail’s (2-0) lead to 13-7 and Williams followed with a bomb to center.

Williams opened the frame with a double and scored on a single from Annalee Hart to cut the deficit to 7-6. A one-out double from Olivia Visconti plated Maggie Smith and Trinity Taron to put the Pirates on top for the first time. 

Hartgrove finished 3-for-5 with a double, five RBI and two runs. Williams was also 3-for-5 with three runs and freshman Zoey Vincent had two hits, two walks, two stolen bases, two RBI and scored one run. 

Topsail is back at home Monday at 6:30 p.m. against Richlands.

Laney 14, Rosewood 8

A seven-run first inning gave the Buccaneers a lead they would never give up in a road victory that improved their record to 2-1.

Alayna Moose had three strikeouts to earn the victory and Kendyl Elliott picked up the save by fanning six. Camberly Horrell had a big game at the plate, finishing 3-for-4 with a double and three RBI.

Laney, which plays at Freedom Christian Academy on Monday night at 5, also got two hits and an RBI from Regan Stewart as well as three RBI from Faith Milligan.

BOYS LACROSSE

New Hanover 8, Ashley 7

The Wildcats picked up a hard-fought nonconference victory behind a pair of goals and two assists from senior Kyle Hatcher.

Gage Tanner also found the back of the net twice for New Hanover (2-0), which also got a goal a piece from Owen Daffer, Scotty Deffinbaugh, Ren Powell and Smith Anderson.

Next up for the Wildcats is a home match against Laney at 5 p.m. Tuesday. Ashley (1-1) plays at Hoggard on Tuesday at 6:45 p.m.

Hoggard 11, Wakefield 5

In his first high school contest, Kenan Everhart scored two goals and handed out three assists to lead the Vikings to a road win.

Goalkeeper Logan Trafton also had a solid performance by finishing with 14 saves. Hoggard (1-0) got three goals from Brandon Brodwater as well as two goals a piece from Rex Hardy and Devin Noonan. Connor Jones chipped in one goal and two assists. 

The Vikings welcome Ashley at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday.

Laney 16, Havelock 0

Nic Lord and Sam Lord led the way with four goals and two assists a piece and the Buccaneers cruised to a lopsided win.

Laney (1-1) also got four goals from Jake Sblendorio. Mason Vaughn, Carson Adkins, Stephen Amigo and Josh Ftzick had the other goals. 

Goalkeepers Matt Lord and Dreyon Washington combined for 10 saves to preserve the shutout. The Buccaneers host New Hanover on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Topsail 13, Northern Durham 2

The Pirates scored the only six goals in the second quarter to build an 8-1 halftime lead in the home victory.

Gavyn Tawes led the way with four goals and two assists. Ronan McGuire had a hat trick and Nick Bedson chipped in two goals and three assists.

Topsail (1-1) goalkeeper Oscar Sessoms finished with five saves. The Pirates play at Laney on Friday at 5 p.m.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Hoggard 15, Broughton 14 (OT)

Katie Witmer won the draw in overtime and buried the game-winning goal.

The Winthrop signee finished with a game-high nine goals to go along with five draw controls. Alyssa Fizer had a hat trick and won seven draws. Hoggard (2-0) also got two goals and two assists from Claire Witmer and three ground balls from Elise Knox.

Goalkeeper Skylar Craven stopped six shots. The Vikings play at Charlotte Catholic on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Laney 16, Havelock 0

Kaia Dillon led the way with three goals and one assist and eight other Buccaneers found the back of the net in the shutout victory.

Avery Woodcock and Kiarra Masnick each had two goals and one assist, while Avery Pyrtle, Payton Jones and Rachel Neuherz all finished with a pair of goals.

Laney (2-1) goalkeepers Hannah Smith and Rachel King combined for three saves. The Buccaneers host Topsail at 6:15 p.m. Monday.

Ashley 20, New Hanover 5

Ten players scored for the Screaming Eagles in the dominant nonconference win.

Seniors Emmie Foxall and Riley Davenport each led the way with four goals. Alexa Burghardt added three goals and Kirsten Chalmers finished with two goals and two assists. 

Goalkeeper Ellen McCarty made three saves. Ashley (1-1) hosts Broughton on Saturday at noon. New Hanover (1-1) hosts Laney on Tuesday night at 6:45.
