Junior Brodie Deutsch surpassed 100 points on the season by finishing with five goals and four assists in the comfortable home win.

Ashley (15-4) built a 6-1 lead after the opening quarter and increased it to 10-1 following a goal from Luis Gonzalez with 3:48 remaining in the second quarter. 

Gonzalez also scored five goals to go along with an assist, while Kenan Everhart added four goals and two assists.

In his first playoff match, freshman Zaccori Stalls had a hat trick. Kendall Marcucilli put home the other goal.

Goalie Blake Smith made 11 saves in the cage.

The Screaming Eagles play at No. 4 Heritage on Friday at a time to be announced.

No. 18 Laney 8, No. 15 Wakefield 7

First round NCHSAA 4A playoffs

The Buccaneers earned their first playoff victory since the sport became sanctioned by the N.C. High School Athletic Association in 2010.

Colin Willis had a strong performance in the cage, finishing with 10 saves.

Laney (13-5) was 0-7 in postseason play prior to Tuesday.  There were playoffs prior to 2010, but they were run by the N.C. High School Lacrosse Association. The Buccaneers played for a state title in 2003.

Carson Adkins scored a team-best four goals to go along with one assist. Logan Shaw chipped in two goals, while Luke Gordon and Mason Vaughan both finished with one goal and one assist.

The Buccaneers led 5-2 at halftime and 7-5 after three quarters. They will play at No. 2 Hoggard on Friday at a time time to be announced.

After dropping both regular season matchups against their rival, the Vikings used a 6-0 run to grab the lead for good in a win that put them into the second round of the playoffs for the 11th time in 12 seasons.

Kajsa Andersson started the run with an unassisted goal with 14:15 remaining in the first half. 

Hoggard (11-8) grabbed a 3-2 lead on a goal from Emily Failla. The advantage grew to 9-3 at halftime. 

A 5-1 run from Ashley (12-4) cut the deficit to 12-8 midway through the second half, but the visitors found the back of the net five consecutive times to put the game out of reach.

Anneleise Meyer led the way with five goals and six draw controls. Failla, Andersson and Adriyana Garrison all had hat tricks. 

The other goals were scored by Logan Campbell, Emily Cox and Kate McGarth. 

Annalise Saffo and Bailey Swails both finished with four goals for the Screaming Eagles. Molly Schutte put home the other goal. 

Next up for the Vikings is a road trip to No. 4 Wake Forest on Friday at a time to be announced.

No. 14 Northwood 11, No. 19 Laney 10 (2 OT)

First round NCHSAA playoffs

The Buccaneers saw their season come to a close in heartbreaking fashion on the road.

Avery Hoey put home a team-high three goals and added one assist, while Lolly Maginnes added two goals.

Laney (11-7) got one goal and two assist from Kiarra Masnick as well well as one goal and one assist from Kira Eldridge.

Emily Bothoff, Caitlin Cronemiller and Kendall Koresko all found the back of the net once. 

Goalkeeper Ava Kunza finished with nine saves.

BASEBALL

No. 1 Hoggard 7, No. 5 Laney 6

The Vikings built a 7-0 lead after two innings and then held off a late comeback effort from the Buccaneers to move into a tie atop the Mideastern Conference.

Hoggard (16-4, 10-3 Mideastern) will square off against rival New Hanover at 6 p.m. Thursday. The winner will claim the league’s lone automatic 4A playoff berth, while the other will receive a wild card.

Bennett McNeill tripled home Spencer Nolan and Logan Ponnett to give the Vikings a 3-0 lead. 

A four-run second inning was highlighted by an RBI single to left field from Jaxson Croom. 

Neither team played well defensively. Laney (11-8, 6-7) committed four errors, while the Vikings had two.

Ben Whitehurst earned the victory by recording six strikeouts in five innings. All six runs he allowed were unearned. Tucker Bowyer didn’t allow a hit in his two innings of work to pick up the save.

Connor Kane went 3-for-3 with a pair of runs scored to lead the Buccaneers. Elijah Zay was the only other player to collect multiple hits.

Laney concludes the regular season at home against Topsail on Thursday at 6 p.m.

No. 3 New Hanover 5, No. 4 Ashley 2

Sean Smith tossed a complete game with nine strikeouts in a home victory that put the Wildcats into a three-way tie for first place in the Mideastern Conference.

Smith threw a first-pitch strike to 20 of the 27 batters he faced. He needed only 85 pitches to record 21 outs.

New Hanover (16-4, 10-3) broke open a 2-2 tie with three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Luke Nixon, Tucker Mueller and Conner Marren were all hit by a pitch. Marren’s came with the bases loaded to scored Nixon with what turned out to be the winning run.

Andrew Jones followed with an RBI walk. Marren scored the final run on a wild pitch with two outs. 

Bromley Thornton walked twice, stole two bases and scored a pair of runs.

Ashley’s (13-8, 7-6) runs were scored by Branton Jernigan and Drew Piner.

Both teams return to action Thursday night at 6. The Wildcats host Hoggard with the 4A title on the line, while the Screaming Eagles welcome North Brunswick.

No. 7 Topsail 7, No. 2 South Brunswick 0

Pitchers Davis Hartman and Grady Swinson combined on a one-hitter with 13 strikeouts to give the Pirates their biggest victory of the season.

Hartman reached the pitch count limit with a no-hitter intact after 6 2/3 innings. He struck out 12 batters and issued only two walks in a dominant performance.

Swinson entered and allowed a single to Aubrey Smith, but rebounded with a strikeout to finish off the win.

Topsail (8-9, 4-9 Mideastern) gave Hartman all the run support he needed with a four-run first inning. 

Walker Dixon doubled home George Nohova and Cameron Rickabaugh with two outs. Ryan Garmendiz followed with a double of his own and then scored on a single from Isaac Henry.

Joe Hall finished 2-for-4, while Nohova and Rickabaugh both scored twice. 

The Pirates play at Laney on Thursday at 6 p.m. South Brunswick (17-3, 10-3) will try to snap a two-game losing streak and claim a share of the league title when it hosts West Brunswick at 7 p.m. Thursday. 

No. 9 West Brunswick 4, No. 6 North Brunswick 2 (10 innings) 

After coming close on several occasions, the Trojans finally earned their first Mideastern Conference win of the season thanks to a two-run single from Gabriel Abbott.

Garrett Powell, Noah Fluharty and Linden Clemmons all worked walks to begin the tenth inning. Following a strikeout, Abbott hit a single to left field that allowed Powell and Fluharty to cross the plate.

West Brunswick (4-17-1, 1-12) got a terrific start from Zach Steagall, who allowed two runs – one earned – on two hits with 13 strikeouts in 6 2/3 innings. 

Able Yuricek pitched the final 3 1/3 innings and struck out four batters to earn the victory.

Clemmons and Sincere Ledbetter both led the Trojans with a pair of hits. Landon Everhart walked three times.

North Brunswick’s (11-10, 4-9) four pitchers – Seth Bowden, Josh Hauser, B.D. Lanier and Cody Callahan – combined for 19 strikeouts. 

Lanier and Trevor Lucas led the offense by collecting two hits.

The Trojans travel to South Brunswick at 7 p.m. Thursday, while the Scorpions travel to Ashley on Thursday night at 6.

No. 11 Coastal Christian 12, No. 13 Southeastern Homeschool 2 (5 innings)

Junior Dominic Libretto went 2-for-2 with a walk, double and five RBIs in the mercy-rule victory that snapped an eight-game losing streak.

Coastal Christian (4-14) scored four runs in the second, third and fifth innings.

Leadoff batter Drew Wertheimer finished 2-for-3 with a walk, one RBI and three runs scored. William Newton, Tyler Brooks and Will Morgan also had a pair of hits.

Brooks, Morgan and Jackson Travis all crossed the plate twice, while Travis and Andrew Sznurkowski both finished with two RBIs.

Newton earned the victory by allowing one earned run with four strikeouts in a complete game.

Braden Ritchie went 2-for-2 to lead Southeastern Homeschool (0-7).

The Centurions host Fayetteville Academy on Thursday at 4 p.m.

SOFTBALL

No. 3 Laney 8, No. 1 Hoggard 5

Freshman second baseman Layla Carr was a catalyst from the leadoff spot by finishing 3-for-3 with two walks, a double, a stolen base and four runs scored in the road victory.

Laney (12-8, 7-4 Mideastern) snapped an eight-game losing streak in the series, dating back to 2018, by collecting 14 hits.

Kendyl Elliott was 3-for-4, while Ali Bunch, Mya Carr, Makenzi Curry and Katelyn Norris all had a pair of hits.

Curry’s two-out, two run single in the top of the third inning brought home Mack Murnane and Layla Carr to put the visitors up 7-0.

Bunch earned the victory by striking out four batters. Elliott had a pair of strikeouts to record the save.

Hoggard’s (13-5, 10-2) Jordan Martin went 3-for-4 with a double and one RBI. Sydney Short and Sydney Ciamillo each finished with two hits.

The Buccaneers conclude the regular season at home against Topsail on Thursday at 6 p.m. The Vikings have finished their regular season.

No. 2 Topsail 8, No. 4 South Brunswick 0

The shutout victory, along with Laney’s win over Hoggard, put the Pirates in sole possession of first place in the Mideastern Conference.

Topsail (16-4, 11-1 Mideastern) can clinch the title with a win at Laney on Thursday at 6 p.m. A loss would force a tie between the Pirates and Hoggard and a tiebreaker would be needed to determine which team earned the league’s top 4A playoff berth.

Like she’s done all season, sophomore Kennedy Sloan had a dominant performance in the circle. She allowed two hits and struck out six batters.

The top three batters in the Topsail lineup – Zoey Vincent, Olivia Visconti and Emmy Clark – went a combined 7-for-9 with three walks, three stolen bases, two RBIs and five runs scored.

Jaylyn Noble drove in a team-high three runs, while Raegan Meadows crossed the plate three times.

South Brunswick (13-6, 4-6) hosts West Brunswick at 6 p.m. Thursday.

No. 7 North Brunswick 8, No. 8 West Brunswick 2

For the second game in a row, sophomore Hanna Robinson recorded 11 strikeouts in the circle.

Robinson allowed only two runs on six hits and didn’t walk any batters to earn the victory.

North Brunswick (4-16, 2-9 Mideastern) grabbed the lead for good by scoring four runs in the bottom of the third inning. 

The advantage grew to 7-2 after four innings. Jayda Rascoe, Blair Sampson and Haven Wittkofsky all went 2-for-4. 

Rascoe, Zia DeBerry and Alana Hill scored twice, while Sampson drove in a pair of runs. 

West Brunswick’s (4-15, 1-9) Anna Frazier struck out nine batters in six innings. Emma Bartlett led the offense by going 2-for-3 with a run scored.

The Scorpions host Whiteville in a nonconference game Wednesday at 6 p.m. The Trojans play at South Brunswick at 6 p.m. Thursday.

No. 6 Trask 14, No. 9 Pender 4

A nine-run bottom of the fifth inning that featured five walks and three errors ended the rivalry game by mercy rule.

Trask (9-13, 4-5 Waccamaw) leadoff batter Madalyn White went 3-for-3 with a walk, three stolen bases, three RBIs and two runs scored.

Logan Fennell, Nilah Holmes and Lacey Jayne all collected two hits. Fennell scored three times, while freshmen Shelby Groves and Cheyenne Saunders both scored twice.

Hannah Mills allowed only one earned run on four hits to secure the victory.

Pender (6-9, 3-6) scored all four runs in the top of the fifth inning.

The teams play again at Pender on Friday at 6 p.m.

GIRLS SOCCER

No. 5 Coastal Christian 5, No. 6 Cape Fear Academy 0

Finley Melvin’s goal off an assist from Audrey Pate in the 36th minute proved to be the game winner.

Coastal Christian (13-4-1, 5-0-0 Coastal Rivers) captured its third straight conference title – the last two being outright. The Centurions also tied the program record for wins in a season. 

Elsa Johnson doubled the lead in the 44th minute before tacking on another goal six minutes later. 

Brooke Allen scored off an assist from Johnson in the 72nd minute. The final goal was scored by freshman Emma Huneycutt with four minutes remaining.

Morgan Fritz dished out a pair of assists. Goalkeeper Betsy Wheeler made eight saves to earn the clean sheet.

CFA (7-3-1, 3-2-0) goalie Naomi Shanewise made six saves.

Both teams are back in action Thursday. The Centurions host Fayetteville Academy at 4:30 p.m., while the Hurricanes travel to Harrells Christian Academy at 4 p.m.

BOYS TENNIS

Cape Fear Academy 9, Coastal Christian 0

The Hurricanes completed the season sweep by dropping only four total games in nine matches.

Hayes Gilbert (No. 1), KJ Kernan (No. 2), Grant Kleppinger (No. 3), Cole Stockman (No. 4) and Ben Kane (No. 6) all won 6-0, 6-0 in singles. Nikita Ivanov had a 6-2, 6-0 victory at No. 5.

The doubles teams of Gilbert/Kernan (No. 1) and Stockman/Jason Huang (No. 2) didn’t lose a game. Seniors Ben Hearne and Hayden Godusi teamed up for an 8-2 win at No. 3.

CFA (11-1, 4-0 Coastal Rivers) plays at Arendell Parrott Academy on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. Coastal Christian (9-6, 1-2) hosts Fayetteville Academy at 4 p.m. Thursday.
