A huge performance from reigning Coastal Preps Player of the Year Lillian Austin helped the Pirates avenge a pair of regular season losses and advance back to the quarterfinals for the second straight season.

It was also the 100th career victory for coach Courtney Burghardt. 

Austin led all players with eight goals to go along with nine draw controls. Topsail (18-3) got four goals from Martha Smith and as well as one goal and four assists from Riley Nee.

“We’re hungry and we want to win it all,” Austin said. “We didn’t play around today.” 

Back-to-back goals from Austin and Madi Oakley in the final minute of the first half gave the Pirates an 11-8 halftime advantage.

Hoggard (17-2) senior Anneleise Meyer found the back of the net 25 seconds into the second half, but Topsail answered with a 4-0 run that was capped by two consecutive goals from Austin.

Oakley and Melina Toronto both had two goals, while Avery White put home the other goal.

The Vikings were led by Adriyana Garrison’s five goals. Meyer finished with a hat trick, and Kate McGrath scored twice. Mia Frick chipped in one goal and six draw controls.

Topsail travels to No. 4 Chapel Hill on Friday at a time to be announced.

The Vikings are back in the Elite 8 for the sixth time since 2015 thanks in large part to an impressive first half. 

After giving up the game’s opening goal, Hoggard (18-3) went on a 7-1 run that was capped by a goal from freshman Jackson Burgee off an assist from Aidan Flynn midway through the second quarter.

Zach Coyle had a hat trick, while Flynn and Sean Hession both scored twice. The other goals came from Blake Edwards, Connor Savage and Jake Stone.

The Vikings led 7-4 at halftime and 10-7 after three quarters. 

Goalie Ben Long made eight saves in the opening half before turning things over to fellow senior Tommy Burgee, who stopped three shots in his 24 minutes of action.

Now, Hoggard has to travel to No. 3 Cardinal Gibbons on Friday at a time to be announced.

No. 12 Topsail 11, No. 20 Leesville Road 9

Third round NCHSAA 4A playoffs

Ronan McGuire scored a team-high six points on four goals and two assists, and the Pirates reached the quarterfinals for the first time as a 4A program.

Connor Hinson dished out three assists, while Barrett Swinson added two goals and two assists. 

Topsail (18-4) also got two goals a piece from Josh Bowen and Zion Lee. 

Goalie Mathias Rossi finished with eight saves.

Next up is a road game at No. 1 Middle Creek on Friday at a time to be announced.

BASEBALL

No. 8 South Brunswick 4, Cedar Ridge 1

First round NCHSAA 3A playoffs

Jaden Marvin’s two-run single in the bottom of the second inning put the Cougars on top for good.

South Brunswick (12-9) added a single run in the fifth and sixth innings to build a 4-0 advantage.

That was more than enough for Evan Coartney, who struck out nine batters and allowed only three hits in a complete game.

Banks Hartman had an RBI single and scored a run. Grady Sotriffer, Jordan Daniels and Dow Pender also crossed the plate.

The Cougars will host the winner of No. 9 Carrboro/No. 24 Union Pines on Friday at a time to be announced.

No. 12 Hoggard 7, No. 21 Clayton 0

First round NCHSAA 4A playoffs

Seven of the nine batters in the Hoggard lineup had at least one hit.

John Mason finished 2-for-3 with one run scored, while Tyler Schaudt reached base four times, stole three bases and crossed the plate three times.

Senior left-handed pitcher Brody Sumner threw a two-hit shutout with nine strikeouts. 

The Vikings (16-8) hit the road to take on No. 5 Middle Creek on Friday at a time to be announced.

No. 1 New Hanover 5, No. 32 Willow Spring 2

First round NCHSAA 4A playoffs

Sean Smith recorded nine strikeouts in a complete-game performance.

The UNC Greensboro signee allowed only two hits and walked just two batters. Of his 103 pitches, 74 went for strikes.

New Hanover (22-2) built a 4-0 lead after two innings. Oakley Rempel had two of the team’s four hits. He also crossed the plate twice.

The Wildcats host No. 17 Jordan on Friday at a time to be announced.

No. 11 Topsail 3, No. 22 New Bern 0

First round NCHSAA 4A playoffs

Senior southpaw Cooper Cavanaugh was his usual dominant self in a shutout victory.

The Davidson signee took a perfect game into the fifth inning and a no-hitter into the sixth. He allowed just one hit and recorded 16 strikeouts.

Topsail (15-8) got two-out RBI singles from Ryder Willcox and Walker Dixon in the bottom of the first inning. The final run came on a sacrifice fly from Luke Keenan in the fifth.

The Pirates travel to No. 6 Chapel Hill on Friday at a time to be announced.

Wilmington Christian Academy 13, Cramerton Christian Academy 1 (5 innings)

Second round NCCSA 2A playoffs

The Patriots advanced to the semifinals by scoring four runs in the first, third and fourth innings.

Isaiah Hunter had a double, three walks and two runs scored. The UNCW signee also earned the victory by allowing one run on two hits with five strikeouts in four innings on the mound.

Caleb Carroll finished 3-for-3 with two RBI and two runs scored, while Logan Lancaster had two hits, two RBI and two runs scored.

WCA (14-8) will take on Bethel Christian Academy on Friday at 5:30 p.m. at Wilson Christian Academy.

Coastal Christian 8, Cary Christian School 6

First round NCISAA 3A playoffs

The Centurions scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally for a home victory.

Christian Marello singled and later scored the game-winning run on a passed ball. A two-out single from Dominic Libretto plated Jay Forester with an insurance run.

Libretto led Coastal Christian (9-12) offensively by going 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI from the leadoff spot. 

Next up is a game at No. 6 Arendell Parrott Academy on Thursday at 6 p.m.

No. 13 Fuquay-Varina 14, No. 20 Ashley 13

First round NCHSAA 4A playoffs

The Screaming Eagles fell in a heartbreaker after the host Bengals scored twice in the bottom of the seventh inning.

Ashley (11-13) built a 13-12 lead after scoring three times in the top of the frame. Dylan Welch doubled home Nate Carmack and Hudson Hauck to tie the score at 12-all. 

Tanner Berry beat out an infield single that allowed Jayce Atanasoff to cross the plate with the go-ahead run.

Welch went 3-for-5, while Berry and Brent Avery each collected two hits. Avery drove in a team-high three runs.

No. 6 Southern Lee 5, No. 27 North Brunswick 4

First round NCHSAA 3A playoffs

Sophomore Josh Hauser went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI, but the Scorpions fell on the road.

North Brunswick (12-13) scored twice in the top of the first inning. Trevor Lucas had a two-out RBI double, and Hauser followed with a run-scoring single to center field.

Southern Lee responded with three runs of its own in the bottom of the frame. The home team scored its other two runs in the second.

Hauser pitched the final three innings and allowed only one hit while striking out three batters.

No. 2 Pinecrest 8, No. 31 Laney 2

First round NCHSAA 4A playoffs

Elliott Melind and Luka Rumora both scored, but the Buccaneers saw their season come to a close against the talented Patriots.

Laney (7-15) finished with five hits.

No. 25 West Bladen 9, No. 8 Trask 5

First round NCHSAA 2A playoffs

The Titans allowed five unanswered runs over the final four inning to suffer an upset loss.

Longwood signee Brandon Bannerman belted a three-run home run in the bottom of the first inning. 

Trask (16-7) also got a pair of hits from UNC Asheville signee Isaac Turner and sophomore Matix Wiler. 

SOFTBALL

No. 3 Laney 2, No. 30 Middle Creek 1

First round NCHSAA 4A playoffs

Sisters Maylani Carr and Mya Carr each both drove in a run in the fifth inning to lead the Buccaneers to a hard-fought win.

Laney (17-5) got an outstanding effort in the circle from Ali Bunch, who allowed only three hits and struck out eight batters.

Bailey Bettencourt and Mya Carr both doubled for the Buccaneers, who host No. 14 Garner on Friday at 6 p.m.

No. 15 Topsail 8, No. 18 Apex Friendship 1

First round NCHSAA 4A playoffs

The Pirates took control with a six-run bottom of the second inning that was highlighted by an inside-the-park grand slam from Emmy Clark.

Clark also drew a pair of walks and scored twice. Topsail (12-6) got two hits a piece from Zoey Vincent, Jaylyn Noble and Rylee Reuter.

Kennedy Sloan earned the victory by throwing a complete game with six strikeouts.

Next up for the Pirates is a trip to No. 2 Southern Alamance on Friday at 6 p.m.

No. 12 Hoggard 5, No. 21 Clayton 4

First round NCHSAA 4A playoffs

Macey Ciamillo retired the final seven batters she faced to slam the door and send the Vikings into the second round.

Ciamillo recorded five strikeouts in a complete game. She also went 3-for-4 at the plate with an RBI double in the bottom of the first inning that tied the score at 1-all.

Hoggard (17-7) grabbed the lead for good an inning later when Jordan Martin’s two-out single plated Tristan Shivers.

Martin, Shivers and Sydney Ciamillo all had multi-hit games.

The Vikings play at No. 5 Wake Forest on Friday night at 6.

No. 6 South Brunswick 20, No. 27 Southern Lee 0 (5 innings)

First round NCHSAA 3A playoffs

Sophomore standout Kina Davis struck out 14 batters in the one-hit shutout.

South Brunswick (18-4) scored three runs in each of the first two innings before tacking on nine in the bottom of the third.

Shortstop Ariana Flores-Acosta went 2-for-3 with a double, triple, four RBI and two runs scored.

Lily Knox doubled twice and drove in a pair of runs, while Macy Sellers crossed the plate four times.

The Cougars will be back at home Friday at 6 p.m. against No. 22 Triton.

No. 4 Cleveland 8, No. 29 Ashley 0

First round NCHSAA 4A playoffs

Regan Martin’s two-out single in the top of the second inning was the only hit for the Screaming Eagles. 

Ashley (7-15) best chance to score came in the sixth when Deirdre Donovan and Emerson Lee both worked walks, but a strikeout ended the threat.

No. 10 East Columbus 15, No. 23 Pender 7

First round NCHSAA 1A playoffs

The Patriots finished with 14 hits, but they weren’t able to overcome a 9-0 deficit.

Linde Cline, Lillie Hanson and Kaylee Woodcock all had three hits. Katie Iddings hit a solo home run in the fifth inning to get Pender (9-12) on the board.

East Columbus shortstop and Oklahoma State signee Karli Godwin was 3-for-3 with a double, two home runs and eight RBI. 

Godwin is hitting .726 with 18 home runs and 79 RBI on the season.
