Senior George Wall scored the game’s only goal off a corner kick from Cameron Arne in the 28th minute to lift the Hurricanes to their first conference title in more than 20 years.

CFA (14-3, 5-0) has now won 11 straight league matches dating back to 2019.

Goalkeeper Hunter Sanderford stopped all three shots he faced to preserve the shutout.

Through 17 matches, the Hurricanes have outscored their opponents 60-26. They conclude the regular season at home against Harrells Christian Academy on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

Coastal Christian (9-9-1, 2-2) is back at home against Fayetteville Academy at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.

New Hanover 8, North Brunswick 3

Charlie Letson scored twice in another dominant win for the Wildcats.

Aidan Payne, Henry Boyd, Andy McCague and Preston Lian all finished with one goal and one assist. New Hanover’s (15-0-1, 9-0 Mideastern) other goals came from Cheeto Miranda and Jonathan Leon Didier.

Oliver Bain, Haze Matthews and Elijah Lopes DaSilva each dished out an assist.

Both teams are back in action Thursday night at 6. The Wildcats travel to Topsail, while North Brunswick (2-12-1, 1-8) hosts West Brunswick.

Hoggard 9, West Brunswick 0

Nick Nelson scored twice and handed out three assists in the mercy-rule road victory.

Hoggard (7-5-1, 6-3 Mideastern) built a 5-0 halftime lead before tacking on four more goals in the second half.

Van Wilson and Joao Barboza Filho both had two goals and one assist. Colin Bruins found the back of the net twice, while James Keener dished out a pair of assists.

Jackson Watkins had the other goal and Jesus Juarez had an assist.

Goalkeeper Shea Tucker made one save to earn the clean sheet.

Next up for the Vikings is a home match against Ashley at 6 p.m. Thursday. West Brunswick (1-13, 0-9) visits North Brunswick on Thursday night at 6.

Topsail 9, South Brunswick 0

The Pirates bounced back nicely from Monday’s loss to league-leading New Hanover.

Tanner Kelly had a hat trick and an assist, while Logan Lawson added two goals.

Maddox Kelly and Evan Perry both finished with one goal and one assist. Will Bigham and Max Colby also found the back of the net for Topsail (9-3, 7-2 Mideastern). 

James Manning dished out a pair of assists. Hayden Howell, Juanchi Suarez and Alex West all had one.

The Pirates host New Hanover on Thursday at 6 p.m. South Brunswick (5-8-1, 2-7) welcomes Laney at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Mideastern Conference Championship at Castle Bay

The Vikings capped a perfect regular season with a 21-stroke victory to claim their first Mideastern Conference title since 2001.

Freshman Ellie Hildreth was the medalist for the ninth straight match after shooting a 3-over-par 75 that included a pair of birdies. She carded a 38 on the front nine before coming home with a 37.

Grace Caudill (88), Hannah Travis (90) and Kayla Statile (91) had the other counting scores for the Vikings. Madison Fankboner also broke 100 by finishing with a 99.

Ashley’s Sarah Enright was the runner-up with an 82. Jillian Fatkin of South Brunswick and Eliza Fogleman of Topsail both carded an 84. 

Hoggard won all nine conference matches and finished with a season stroke total of 1,808.

Topsail finished second with 2,009 strokes. They were followed by Laney (2,092), South Brunswick (2,214), Ashley (2,299), New Hanover (2,772), West Brunswick (2,719) and North Brunswick (2,928).

Hildreth cruised to the season individual title by finishing with 526 strokes over 126 holes (nine-hole average of 37.6).

The rest of the top five included: Fatkin (567), Fogleman (590), Enright (627) and Caudill (642).

VOLLEYBALL

Ashley 3, Topsail 0

(25-15, 25-16, 25-12)

Marlee Cook had a double-double with 11 assists, 11 digs, three kills and one ace in the sweep that kept the Screaming Eagles tied atop the Mideastern Conference standings.

A win over North Brunswick on Thursday would give Ashley (14-6, 12-1) at least a share of the league title.

Savannah Cook finished with a team-high 10 kills to go along with nine assists and two aces. Elizabeth Claire Toomer had 14 digs, while Bella Cook put down seven kills.

The Screaming Eagles also got nine digs, five kills and one ace from Annalyse Askew.

Topsail (7-9, 6-7) got eight kills, four aces and three digs from freshman Ryan Lambert. Carrina Shugarts had a team-high eight kills to go along with 10 digs, while Olivia Hatcher added seven kills. 

Setter Ellee Beaman dished out 18 assists for the Pirates, who travel to Laney at 6 p.m. Thursday. 

Hoggard 3, Laney 1

(25-21, 25-23, 19-25, 26-24)

The Vikings managed to come away with a home victory despite a less than stellar performance in which they hit only .167.

Lena Cosgrove had a team-high nine kills, while Mary Lamporte finished with eight. Hoggard (14-5, 12-1 Mideastern) did have 16 blocks to remain in a tie for first place in the conference standings.

They can earn at least a share of the regular season title with a win at New Hanover on Thursday night.

Brooke Osterhoudt hit .400 with a match-high 14 kills to lead to the way for Laney (12-7, 9-4). The junior also had 18 digs, four blocks and two aces.

Isabel Sandstrum chipped in 12 digs, nine blocks, six kills and a pair of aces. Jamie Wurtzbacher put down nine kills to go along with 17 digs, three blocks and two aces.

Libero Carina Vale had 24 digs for the Buccaneers, who conclude the regular season at home against Topsail on Thursday at 6 p.m.

New Hanover 3, West Brunswick 0

(25-19, 25-10, 25-15)

A double-double of 10 kills, 10 digs and two aces from senior outside hitter Sarah Collins lifted the Wildcats to a comfortable win.

Ali Blackwell put down eight kills to go along with 13 digs and six aces. New Hanover (9-7, 8-5 Mideastern) also got 12 assists, six digs, four kills and a pair of aces from Mary Moore.

Sophomore setter Lillee Moore added 10 assists, six digs and four aces. Cassidy Stewart had two blocks.

The Wildcats conclude the regular season at home against Hoggard on Thursday night at 6. West Brunswick (0-17, 0-13) visits South Brunswick at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Coastal Christian 3, Cape Fear Academy 0

(25-15, 25-8, 25-20)

The Centurions picked up their second victory in as many days behind a match-high 15 kills from senior outside hitter Kelly McConekey.

She also had 11 aces and two digs. Elsa Southerland put down seven kills, while Lydia Pate added six kills and three blocks.

Coastal Christian (27-2, 5-0 Coastal Rivers) also got 17 assists and two digs from Maris Grant as well as 15 assists and three kills from Kora Beth Witzenman.

Mallorie Moore chipped in three aces, two blocks and two kills.

The Centurions host Fayetteville Academy at 5:45 p.m. Thursday.

Wilmington Christian Academy 3, Bethel Christian Academy 1

(25-18, 19-25, 25-12, 25-21)

Junior middle Kenleigh Todd had a huge night by finishing with 22 kills, eight digs and two aces.

WCA (13-10) also got 19 assists, nine kills, two digs and one ace from Lauren Longbottom. Caroline Prease finished with 10 digs and three aces, while Abby Pietro added seven assists and four digs.

Natalie Hodge served four of the Patriots’ 14 aces.

Next up for WCA is a home match against Wilson Christian Academy on Friday night at 5.

GIRLS TENNIS

North Brunswick 5, South Brunswick 4

The Scorpions earned a season split by taking two of three doubles courts after the rivals split six singles matches.

The match came down to No. 3 doubles, where Charley Garst and Grace Lewis earned a dramatic 9-8(8) victory.

North Brunswick’s (3-10, 3-9 Mideastern) singles wins came from Sabrina Achki (6-0, 6-0 at No. 1), Simone Samuel (6-2, 6-0 at No. 2) and Cameron Phillips (6-0, 6-1 at No. 5).

Achki and Samuel dropped only one game at No. 1 singles.

South Brunswick (5-12, 5-9) played without its top two players – Sarah Subach and Allie Theisen. Everyone else in the lineup was forced to move up two spots and the Cougars still nearly came away with a win.

Julia Wagaman (6-0, inj. default at No. 3), Allie Hicks (6-1, 6-1 at No. 4) and Laura Sparks (6-1, 6-3 at No. 6) had the singles victories. Stidham and Hicks lost only two games at No. 2 doubles.

The Scorpions host Hoggard on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. in the resumption of a match that was postponed due to rain. The Cougars have concluded the regular season.

New Hanover 9, West Brunswick 0

Freshmen Sophia Catino (No. 1), Hanna Davis (No. 2) and Bella Hocker (No. 4) all cruised to 8-0 singles wins to help the Wildcats finish the regular season unbeaten.

New Hanover (15-0, 14-0 Mideastern) also got 8-1 victories from Blair Mickle (No. 3) and Allana Henderson (No. 6). Sydney Hundley lost only two games at No. 5.

The doubles teams of Mickle/Hocker (No. 2) and Hayden Dooley/Ava Martin (No. 3) won by identical 8-0 scores, while Catino and Davis dropped just one game at No. 1.

West Brunswick finished the season 0-17 overall and 0-14 in league play.

Hoggard 9, Laney 0

Elena Berg (No. 1) and Margaret O’Malley (No. 3) both lost only one game in singles before teaming up for an 8-2 victory at No. 1 doubles in the home sweep.

Hoggard’s (12-3, 11-2) other singles winners were: Emily Cox (6-2, 6-2 at No. 2), Helen Bennington (6-3, 6-2 at No. 4), Zoe Wilcox (3-6, 7-5, 10-7 at No. 5) and Katie Sechrist (6-3, 6-4 at No. 6).

Cox and Bennington dropped one game at No. 2 doubles, while Wilcox and Hailey Schreiber picked up an 8-5 victory.

The Vikings conclude the regular season at North Brunswick in the resumption of a postponed match on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
