A week after suffering their first loss of the season, the Scorpions got back on track thanks to a stellar effort on the defensive side of the ball.

North Brunswick (4-1, 1-1 Mideastern) allowed only 203 yards and came up with four stops on fourth down to hold Laney (3-2, 1-1) to a season low for points.

“I’m proud of our kids because they are resilient,” North Brunswick coach Bryan Davis said. “They could have packed it up after last week, but they didn’t. They played hard and executed.”

The game was scoreless for most of the opening half. A screen pass from TT Green to Caden Cook went for a 34-yard touchdown with 28.6 seconds left in the second quarter to give the Scorpions a 7-0 lead.

After managing only 21 rushing yards over the first 24 minutes, the Buccaneers got the ground game going on the opening possession of the second half.

Xavior Bouldin rushed for all 75 yards on seven carries, including a 1-yard plunge that evened the score.

After both teams were forced to punt, North Brunswick took over at the Laney 44-yard line and needed only three plays to regain the lead.

On third-and 10, Green stepped up in the pocket and delivered a brilliant throw to Cook for a 48-yard score.

The Buccaneers turned the ball over on downs on the ensuing possession.

A heavy dose of running back Eric Mosley helped the home team take five minutes off the clock. The 11-play, 47-yard drive was capped by Mosley’s 2-yard touchdown.

Mosley finished with 80 yards on 20 carries. Green went 6-for-13 for 147 yards.

Bouldin led all players with 116 yards on 14 carries. Laney quarterback Ty Little completed 12 of 19 passes for 66 yards.

“We allowed New Hanover to convert a a couple third and longs, so the entire week we were preaching that we didn’t want to let that happen again,” North Brunswick safety Jordan Jackson said. “Our main focus was to get off the field on third or fourth down.”

No. 2 New Hanover 28, No. 7 South Brunswick 13

For the second week in a row, the Wildcats blocked a punt and returned it for a touchdown in a Mideastern Conference victory.

Steven Smith came around the left side untouched for the block, and Cornelius Allen recovered the ball in the end zone to increase New Hanover’s (4-1, 2-0) lead to 14-0 late in the opening quarter.

South Brunswick (3-2, 0-2) cut the deficit to 14-6 on a keeper from quarterback Jameson Prince and then forced a punt, but the ball went back to the Wildcats on an interception from Z’Marion Robinson.

The turnover led to another touchdown – this time a 19-yard pass from Nathan LaRose to Brethan Barnhill – to give the home team a 21-6 halftime lead.

A 60-yard fumble recovery from South Brunswick defensive lineman Garrett Frazier early in the fourth quarter made it a one possession game, but the Cougars wouldn’t get any closer.

A 1-yard touchdown run from Mason Shand put the game out of reach. Caden Morton also found the end zone from 1-yard out for New Hanover’s first touchdown.

No. 1 Hoggard 10, No. 6 Topsail 0

The Vikings picked up their 16th consecutive Mideastern Conference victory, but it didn’t come easy.

A 6-yard touchdown pass from Hudson Wilharm to fullback Cole Manning on third-and-goal broke a scoreless tie with 11:25 remining in the game.

It capped a nine-play, 73-yard drive that featured seven M’kel Bellamy rushes.

Bellamy finished with 28 carries for 147 yards. Wilharm went 15 of 22 for 110 yards.

Hoggard’s (4-1, 2-0) defense was dominant as usual. Topsail (3-2, 1-1) managed only 51 yards of offense.

Noah Young connected on a 27-yard field goal with 4:16 remaining to complete the scoring.

No. 9 West Brunswick 56, No. 10 Ashley 49

The Trojans scored the game-winning touchdown with 48 seconds remaining, and then sealed the home victory with an interception 13 seconds later.

West Brunswick (1-4, 1-1 Mideastern) built a 27-7 lead with 5:58 remaining in the second quarter, but Ashley (1-4, 0-2) scored on back-to-back drives to cut the deficit to six at halftime.

The game was tied at 35-all and 42-all. The Trojans took a 48-42 lead with 9:07 remaining, but the PAT was blocked.

Ashley scored on the ensuing drive and converted the PAT to take a 49-48 lead, but they weren’t able to get a late defensive stop.
