Spot A Star: December 16-21, 2019

Spot A Star is a list of the top individual performances of the week. Coaches are encourages to submit the names of their athletes who excelled on the field, court or course by 7 p.m. every Sunday. The list will be published each Monday.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Will Berry, Trask: Averaged 9 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists in conference showdowns against Richlands and Pender.

Cameron Blanks, Hoggard: Hit 13 of 14 free throws in Tuesday’s hard-fought road victory over Ashley. The senior point guard went 19 of 23 from the charity stripe and added 15 assists in four games.

Brock Boehling, Southeastern Homeschool: Freshman went 4 of 4 from the field, including all three 3-point attempts, for 11 points in Tuesday’s 61-27 victory over Durham Flight Homeschool. Boehling also added four rebounds, two assists and two steals.

Jajuan Carr, Pender: Poured in a remarkable 48 points and added five steals to lead the Patriots to a 91-77 win over East Carteret on Tuesday. Two days later, Carr had 28 points, eight rebounds, four assists and four steals in a road win over rival Trask.

Jacob Fisher, Hoggard: Scored a career-high 14 points by going 5 of 7 from the field (3 of 4 from 3-point range) in Thursday’s dominant win over Gray’s Creek in the opening round of the CCS Classic.

Sabastian Haidera, Hoggard: Helped the Vikings go 3-1 on the week by averaging 13.3 points and 2.5 assists. Haidera also went 15 of 18 from the free throw line.

Jordan Jenrette, South Brunswick: Junior forward helped the Cougars go 2-1 on the week by averaging 16.3 points and 9.3 rebounds. Jenrette had 24 points and 13 rebounds on Wednesday in a 64-60 overtime victory over Jacksonville.

Jayden Johnson, Southeastern Homeschool: Scored a team-high 13 points and added two rebounds, two steals and one assist in a dominant home win on Tuesday.

Jakwon Moore, Pender: In Coastal 8 Conference victories over East Carteret and Trask, Moore averaged 20 points, 11 rebounds, 4.5 blocks and 1.5 steals.

Josh Moyers, Southeastern Homeschool: In 13 minutes of action, Moyers had nine points, four rebounds, three assists and three steals in Tuesday’s 61-27 win over Durham Flight Homeschool.

Watson Orr, Trask: Shot 59 percent from the field (10 of 17) and 67 percent from 3-point range (8 of 12) while averaging 16 points in a pair of conference games.

Tyran Pickett, Trask: Helped the Titans split a pair of Coastal 8 Conference games by averaging 9 points 6 rebounds and 3.5 assists.

Bray Rankin, Hoggard: Junior guard averaged 14.3 points and shot 41 percent from the field (12 of 29) in three games at the CCS Classic to lead the Vikings to a third-place finish.

AJ Rossi, South Brunswick: In contests against Jacksonville, North Davidson and Clinton, Rossi averaged 13.3 points, 4.3 assists and 4.3 rebounds.

Brantley Springer, Southeastern Homeschool: Finished with seven points, five assists, two rebounds and two steals while playing only 12 minutes in a lopsided home victory on Tuesday.

BOYS SWIMMING & DIVING

Chase Davis, Topsail: Broke his own school record with a time of 1:49.88 to win the 200 freestyle on Thursday at UNCW. Davis was also second in the 100 freestyle (50.62).

Luke Dixon, South Brunswick: Captured the 500 freestyle with a personal best time of 6:23.03 at Thursday’s meet against Laney and West Brunswick. Dixon also had a personal best in the 100 breaststroke (1:20.64) and was a member of the second place 400 freestyle relay.

Forrest Hoover, Topsail: Sophomore broke the one-minute mark in the 100 freestyle for the first time by touching the wall in 58.52.

Lucas Kuhn, South Brunswick: At Thursday’s Mideastern Conference meet at Brunswick CC, the senior finished first in the 100 freestyle (58.21) and 100 butterfly (1:03.22). He was on to anchor the 200 medley and 200 freestyle relay teams that both placed second.

Bailey MacVaugh, Topsail: Finished the 100 freestyle in 58.44 to break the one-minute mark for the first time.

Liam McBride, Topsail: Dropped eight seconds off of his 500 freestyle for a personal-best time of 6:03.85. McBride also did a terrific job in his first ever 200 IM, finishing fifth in 2:30.98.

Will Parker, Hoggard: Claimed the 50 freestyle (22.32) and 100 freestyle (48.76) while also swimming the anchor leg on the victorious 200 medley relay (1:44.11) to lead the Vikings to a meet win Thursday at UNCW.

Jeffrey Settlemyre, Hoggard: Senior was the lone swimmer to claim four victories at Thursday’s Mideastern Conference meet at UNCW. Settlemyre won the 100 butterfly (52.26) and 500 freestyle (5:04.19) and was on the 200 medley (1:44.11) and 400 freestyle (3:31.71) relays that both finished first.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Morgan Adam, Laney: Was named to the All-Tournament team at the Chris & Kari Collier Holiday Tournament at South Central after averaging 10 points and going 6 of 11 from 3-point range in three contests.

Madeline Elgart, Hoggard: Helped the Vikings finish second at the CCS Classic by averaging 7 points and 9.7 rebounds. The sophomore shot 50 percent from the field (9 of 18) in the three contests.

Sydney Hartgrove, Topsail: Finished with 14 points and 14 rebounds in Tuesday’s 47-41 win at New Hanover.

Anisa Lewis, Trask: Averaged 24 points, 11 rebounds, 6 steals and 4 assists in Coastal 8 Conference contests against Richlands and Pender.

Shelby Parker, Topsail: Shot 50 percent from the field (4 of 8) for eight points in a six-point road victory over New Hanover on Tuesday.

Saniya Rivers, Ashley: Junior standout averaged 21.5 points in four games. She finished with a game-high 25 on Tuesday in a home conference win over Hoggard.

Julia Sulivan, Topsail: Helped the Pirates pick up a key victory over New Hanover on Tuesday by finishing with a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds.

GIRLS SWIMMING

Eppy Camacho, New Hanover: Freshman placed second in the 200 freestyle (2:15.31) and 100 breaststroke (1:14.59) at Thursday’s Mideastern Conference meet at UNCW.

Madison Hoover, Topsail: Won the 500 freestyle (5:38.26) and 100 backstroke (1:04.10) and earned automatic regional qualifying times in both during Thursday’s MEC meet at UNCW.

Aubrey Ella Hyldahl, Hoggard: Senior touched the wall first in the 200 freestyle in a time of 2:08.91. She was also on the victorious The 200 freestyle (1:48.57) and 400 freestyle (3:58.75) relays.

Emma Johnson, Hoggard: Helped the Vikings win Thursday’s Mideastern Conference meet against Ashley, New Hanover and Topsail by earning individual victories in the 200 IM (2:30.09) and 100 breaststroke (1:12.86).

Peyton Neathery, New Hanover: Earned a second-place finish in the 500 freestyle (5:50.55) and was third in 100 backstroke (1:07.19) on Thursday.

Topsail 200 medley relay: Madison Hoover, Tihani Contreras, Paiton Newbill and Julia Oakley completed the race in a season-best time of 2:08.69 to earn a victory on Thursday. The group also placed second in the 400 freestyle relay with an automatic regional qualifying time.

Maisy Yopp, New Hanover: At Thursday’s MEC meet against Ashley, Hoggard and Topsail, Yopp finished second in the 200 IM (2:46.36) and sixth in the 100 breaststroke (1:24.95).

WRESTLING

Bryan Aragao, North Brunswick: Captured the 182-pound title at the Wynn-Butler Memorial Tournament at North Pitt by finishing with a pair of pins as well as a 10-3 decision.

Hunter Campbell, North Brunswick: Talented junior won his 100th career match in the semifinals of the Wynn-Butler Memorial Tournament at North Pitt on Saturday. Campbell won the title at 145 pounds and was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler.

Alex Grommesh, Ashley: Finished the week with a 5-1 record that included two pins and three decisions. Grommesh placed third at 160 pounds at the Mark Adams Holiday Classic at Cary.

Jon Luke Horne, Ashley: Captured the 170-pound title at the Mark Adams Holiday Classic at Cary on Saturday. He had three pins and two decisions. Grommesh also had a pin on Thursday against North Brunswick.

Malik Law, North Brunswick: Had pins in the semifinals and finals to claim the title at 120 pounds at North Pitt’s Wynn-Butler Memorial Tournament.

Oscar Limon, Hoggard: Sophomore 106 pounder went 4-1 at the Titan Duals at Trask on Saturday.

Marcus Mondragon, Laney: Remained unbeaten by cruising to the 138-pound title at the two-day Tiger Holiday Classic at Chapel Hill. Mondragon had a second period pin in the finals over a defending state runner-up from Virginia.

Neil Phillips, Hoggard: Went 4-1 at 170 pounds on Saturday at the Titan Duals in Trask. The Vikings finished fourth out of 10 teams.

Alexander Rollison, Hoggard: Finished with a perfect 5-0 record at 145 pounds to help the Vikings finish fourth as a team at Saturday’s Titan Duals at Trask.

Mark Samuel, Laney: Had no trouble winning the 106 pound title at the Tiger Holiday Classic at Chapel Hill. The sophomore pinned South View’s Max Brewster in 1:48 in the championship bout.
