Spot A Star: January 27-February 1, 2020

Spot A Star is a list of the top individual performances of the week. Coaches are encourages to submit the names of their athletes who excelled on the field, court or course by 7 p.m. every Sunday. The list will be published each Monday.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Sabastian Haidera, Hoggard: In Friday’s 69-50 victory over West Brunswick, Haidera scored 17 points to go along with five rebounds, three assists and two steals. 

Jayden Johnson, Southeastern Homeschool: Finished with 25 points, six rebounds, three steals and two assists in Saturday’s 77-61 win over Chatham Homeschool. He also had 21 points, seven rebounds, four assists and four steals on Tuesday in a victory over Goldsboro Homeschool.

Jackson Massey, Hoggard: Went 5 of 5 from the field for 10 points and added six rebounds and four steals in Friday’s home win over West Brunswick.

Brady Rankin, Hoggard: Led the Vikings to MEC victories over Ashley (11 points, three rebounds and two steals) and West Brunswick (21 points, nine rebounds, three assists and two steals).

Kyler Schoonmaker, Southeastern Homeschool: Reached double figures in Tuesday’s win over Goldsboro Homeschool (17 points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals) and Friday’s loss against South Wake Homeschool (18 points, seven assists, four rebounds and one steal).

Brantley Springer, Southeastern Homeschool: Talented sophomore scored at least 20 points in all three games. For the week, he averaged 22.3 points and 6.3 rebounds.

Josh Moyers, Southeastern Homeschool: Recorded a pair of double-doubles against South Wake Homeschool on Friday and Chatham Homeschool on Saturday. In those two games, Moyers finished with 26 points, 22 rebounds and four steals.

BOYS DIVING

Jason Bunn, Hoggard: Won the 4A East Regional title on Friday afternoon by finishing with a score of 455.20 on his 11 dives.

Nathan Nichols, New Hanover: Sophomore scored 274.95 points on his 11 dives to capture the 3A East Regional title.

Alex Schultz, New Hanover: Scored 219.40 points on 11 dives to finish fourth at the 3A East Regional and earn a berth in the state championship.

BOYS SWIMMING

Laith Ausband, Southeastern Homeschool: Finished third in the 500 freestyle at Saturday’s NCHEAC State Championship to help the Cardinals secure the title.

Logan Butner, Ashley: At Saturday’s 4A East Regional, Butner was fourth in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 58.83 and also swam a leg on the sixth place 200 freestyle relay (1:31.64).

Chase Davis, Topsail: Had an impressive meet at the 3A East Regional on Friday by winning the 100 backstroke in 53.56 and finishing second in the 200 freestyle with a time of 1:46.94. He was also on the second place 200 medley relay (1:46.69) and third place 400 freestyle relay (3:32.99).

Gideon Fields, Southeastern Homeschool: Placed third in the 50 freestyle and was on the winning 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays at Saturday’s NCHEAC State Championship.

Patrick Furbay, Ashley: Finished third in both the 50 freestyle (21.80) and 100 backstroke (51.84) on Saturday at the 4A East Regional. Furbay also qualified for states in the 200 freestyle relay (sixth in 1:31.64).

Nick Gallek, Topsail: Helped the Pirates finish second as a team by coming in fifth in the 100 breaststroke (1:07.79) and also swimming a leg on the 200 medley relay (second in 1:46.69).

Liam McBride, Topsail: At Friday’s 3A East Regional, McBride had fifth-place finishes in the 200 freestyle (2:01.48) and 500 freestyle (5:37.12). He was also on the 200 medley relay (second in 1:46.69) and 400 freestyle relay (third in 3:32.99).

Will Parker, Hoggard: Picked up a second-place finish in the 100 freestyle (48.09) and fifth-place finish in the 50 freestyle (22.03) on Saturday. Parker was also on the 200 medley relay (seventh in 1:41.63).

Jeffrey Settlemyre, Hoggard: Senior standout won the 100 backstroke (50.21) and 100 butterfly (50.17) on Saturday at the 4A East Regional. He also swam the backstroke leg on the 200 medley relay team that was seventh with a time of 1:41.63.

Southeastern Homeschool 200 freestyle relay: Elijah Berglund, Gideon Fields, Noah Rowland and Thomas Teeters won the event at the state championship in state record time. 

Southeastern Homeschool 200 medley relay: The team of Thomas Teeters, Gideon Fields, Colvet King and Noah Rowland set a new state record in a win at the NCHEAC State Championship on Saturday.

Thomas Teeters, Southeastern Homeschool: Helped the Cardinals claim the NCHEAC state championship by winning the 200 freestyle in a new state record time of 1:47.54. He also captured the 500 freestyle and was on the victorious 200 medley and 200 freestyle relays, which all set new state records.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Morgan Adam, Laney: Scored a team-high 15 points and made all six free throw attempts down the stretch in a hard-fought win at New Hanover on Friday.

Brooke Barton, Coastal Christian: In her final two regular season contests, Barton had double-doubles against CFA (14 points and 11 rebounds) and Harrells Christian Academy (19 points and 13 rebounds). Barton has 12 double-doubles in 18 games.

Sydney Hartgrove, Topsail: Recorded a triple-double with 16 points, 10 rebounds and 11 steals in Friday’s nine-point victory over South Brunswick on Friday. On Tuesday, the junior had her 11th double-double by finishing with 26 points and 10 rebounds in a loss to New Hanover.

Maya Insley, Coastal Christian: Helped the Centurions close out the regular season with a win over Harrells Christian Academy on Friday by scoring 10 points to go along with six steals and two assists.

Via Jennings, New Hanover: Along with defending the opposing team’s top player every game, Jennings has been a solid offensive contributor. She had 10 points, six rebounds, six assists and three steals in Tuesday’s key win over Topsail.

Anisa Lewis, Trask: Averaged 27 points and 10 rebounds in conference wins over Pender (49-34 on Tuesday) and East Carteret (62-39 on Friday).

Destiny Newkirk, New Hanover: In a pair of Mideastern Conference games, Newkirk finished with 20 points, 26 rebounds, five steals and four blocks.

Saniya Rivers, Ashley: Had double-doubles in all three victories to run her season total to 14. She averaged 21.3 points, 14 rebounds, 7 assists, 6.7 steals and 2.7 blocks in wins over Hoggard (49-33 on Tuesday), East Duplin (53-35 on Wednesday) and North Brunswick (63-28 on Friday).

Mia Seemadray, Ashley: Tied her season-high with 16 points and added seven rebounds and six steals in Wednesday’s 53-35 home victory over East Duplin. The senior also had seven points, six rebounds and six steals a day earlier in a 49-33 win at Hoggard.

Julia Sullivan, Topsail: Averaged 11.5 points and 13.5 rebounds in MEC games against New Hanover and South Brunswick.

GIRLS SWIMMING

Emmie Backman, Southeastern Homeschool: Placed third in the 500 freestyle and was on the 400 freestyle relay team that was second to help the Cardinals finish third as a team at the NCHEAC State Championship on Saturday.

Laurie-Anne Bazinet, Hoggard: At Saturday’s 4A East Regional, the senior was eighth in the 100 freestyle (56.10) and was on the 200 medley relay (eighth in 1:54.86) and 200 freestyle relay (seventh in 1:44.44) that both qualified for states.

Liz Boldt, South Brunswick: Earned second-place finishes in the 100 backstroke (1:01.29) and 100 butterfly (1:01.35) at Friday’s 3A East Regional. Boldt also qualified for states as a member of the 200 freestyle relay (first in 1:48.27) and 400 freestyle relay (third in 4:02.67)

Eppy Camacho, New Hanover: Qualified for the 3A State Championship in three events – 100 breaststroke (second in 1:13.86), 200 medley relay (sixth in 2:07.85) and 400 freestyle relay (sixth in 4:15.02) at Friday’s 3A East Regional. 

Jenna Grill, Laney: Finished third in the 50 freestyle (24.29) and fifth in the 100 butterfly (57.26) at Saturday’s 4A East Regional.

Madison Hoover, Topsail: Won the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:00.23 and was fifth in the 200 freestyle in 2:02.77 at the 3A East Regional on Friday. Hoover was also on the 200 freestyle relay team that finished fourth (1:49.87).

Emma Johnson, Hoggard: Was the area’s highest finisher at Saturday’s 4A East Regional, placing second in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:06.31. Johnson also swam the breaststroke leg on the 200 medley relay, which finished eighth in 1:54.86.

Peyton Neathery, New Hanover: Finished fifth in the 500 freestyle (5:44.23) and eighth in the 100 backstroke (1:06.62) and was also on the sixth place 200 medley relay (2:07.85) and 400 freestyle relay (4:15.02) at Friday’s 3A East Regional.

Paiton Newbill, Topsail: Qualified for the 3A State Championship in the 50 freestyle by placing sixth with a time of 26.75 at Friday’s 3A East Regional. Newbill was also a member of the 200 freestyle relay, which finished fourth.

South Brunswick 200 freestyle relay: The team of Aubrey Sherrod, Hannah Overton, Emma Stone and Liz Boldt won the event with a time of 1:48.27 at the 3A East Regional.

Seleste Streck, Topsail: Freshman dropped 15 seconds off her personal best time in the 500 freestyle at Friday’s 3A East Regional.

Elizabeth Teeters, Southeastern Homeschool: At Saturday’s NCHEAC State Championship, Teeters won the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle and also anchored the second-place 400 freestyle relay.

WRESTLING

Rogan Heath, Trask: Senior had a pair of pins to capture the title at 132 pounds at Saturday’s Coastal 8 Conference Tournament.

Jon Luke Horne, Ashley: Improved to 30-0 with three victories Saturday en route to the 170-pound Mideastern Conference title.

Conner Johnson, Laney: Claimed his third straight Mideastern Conference title with an 8-6 victory in the finals at 132 pounds.

Marcus Mondragon, Laney: Had back-to-back pins in 16 seconds to win the 138-pound Mideastern Conference title on Saturday.

DaRion Smith, Pender: The 220-pounder won the Coastal 8 Conference title by registering a pair of pins.
