Spot A Star: January 6-11, 2020

Spot A Star is a list of the top individual performances of the week. Coaches are encourages to submit the names of their athletes who excelled on the field, court or course by 7 p.m. every Sunday. The list will be published each Monday.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Emmanuel Bonsu, Cape Fear Academy: Senior point guard scored his 1,00th point Tuesday to help the Hurricanes take down 61-43 win over Carolina Forest, S.C. In two victories, Bonsu averaged 14 points.

Jajuan Carr, Pender: In Coastal 8 Conference victories over SW Onslow and Dixon, Carr averaged 23.5 points and 5.5 steals.

Derek Gardner, Topsail: Led all scorers with 28 points and also had seven rebounds and six assists in Friday’s road loss at West Brunswick.  Gardner went 15 of 16 from the free throw line.

Sabastian Haidera, Hoggard: Scored all 22 of his points in the second half to help the Vikings earn a seven-point home win over Laney on Tuesday. He finished with nine points in Friday’s victory over North Brunswick.

Jayden Johnson, Southeastern Homeschool: In Monday’s five-point win at Harrells Christian Academy, Johnson shined on both ends of the floor. He finished with a game-high 26 point on 12 of 18 shooting. He also chipped in six rebounds, five steals and one block.

Brantley Springer, Southeastern Homeschool: Sophomore scored 14 points to go along with six rebounds and six assists in a solid 64-59 road win over Harrells Christian Academy on Monday. Springer was also 7 of 8 from the free throw line.

Mikai Stanley, New Hanover: In three contests, Stanley averaged 12.7 points. The senior had 22 points and three rebounds in a win over Ashley on Friday.

BOYS SWIMMING

Logan Butner, Ashley: Won the 200 IM in 2:04.43 and 100 breaststroke in 1:01.27 and also swam a leg on the victorious 200 medley relay (1:42.24) at Friday’s New Hanover County Championship.

Chase Davis, Topsail: At Thursday’s meet against South Brunswick and West Brunswick, Davis had victories in the 50 freestyle (23.36) and 100 backstroke (56.48). He also swam a leg on the 200 medley relay (1:53.83) and 400 freestyle relay (3:47.12).

Patrick Furbay, Ashley: At Friday’s New Hanover County Championship, Furbay was victorious in the 50 freestyle (22.54), 100 backstroke (53.53) and 200 medley relay (1:42.24).

Nick Gallek, Topsail: Captured the 200 IM (2:23.76), 100 breaststroke (1:12.36), 200 medley relay (1:53.83) and 200 freestyle relay (1:46.04) to help the Pirates win Thursday’s meet against South Brunswick and West Brunswick.

Bailey MacVaugh, Topsail: Posted personal-best times on his way to victories in the 100 freestyle (58.04) and 200 freestyle (2:11.60) and was a member of the winning 200 freestyle relay (1:46.04) and 400 freestyle relay (3:47.12). 

Liam McBride, Topsail: Was part of a pair of winning relays – 200 medley (1:53.83) and 400 freestyle relay (3:47.12) – and also touched the wall first in the 100 butterfly (1:03.99) at Thursday’s MEC meet against South Brunswick and West Brunswick.

Will Parker, Hoggard: Won the 100 freestyle in 50.28 and was on the victorious 200 freestyle relay that finished in 1:33.73 on Friday at the New Hanover County Championship. Parker also had second-place finishes in the 50 freestyle (22.66) and 200 medley relay (1:44.10).

Jeffrey Settlemyre, Hoggard: Helped the Vikings win the New Hanover County Championship by finishing first in the 100 butterfly (54.26) and 200 freestyle relay (1:33.73). He was also second in the 100 backstroke (53.89) and 200 medley relay (1:44.10).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Dasani Boney, Laney: Senior leader helped the Buccaneers pick up a pair of victories that kept them unbeaten in the Mideastern Conference. She finished with five points against Hoggard on Tuesday and tied for a team-high with eight on Friday against South Brunswick.

Claire Emma Britt, Hoggard: Continues to be an huge part of the Vikings’s success. Britt averaged 5.5 points and 6.5 rebounds in games against Laney and North Brunswick. 

Sydney Hartgrove, Topsail: Led the Pirates with 15 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double in Friday’s loss to West Brunswick.

Lilah Johnson, Topsail: Knocked down three 3-pointers and finished with 13 points on Friday in a 54-48 loss against West Brunswick.

Maya Insley, Coastal Christian: After being forced to leave Tuesday’s game in the first quarter with an injury, Insley came out strong on Friday with eight points, 10 steals and three assists to lead the Centurions to a home win over Harrells Christian Academy in the Coastal Rivers Conference opener.

Anisa Lewis, Trask: In a pair of Coastal 8 Conference contests, Lewis averaged 20.5 points, seven rebounds, six steals and four assists. She had 31 points in Friday’s lopsided win over Lejeune.

AC Fuller, Coastal Christian: Put together back-to-back strong performances with seven points and five rebounds in Tuesday’s loss to Village Christian Academy and then a season-high eight points and seven rebounds in Friday’s victory over Harrells Christian Academy.

Saniya Rivers, Ashley: In lopsided victories over Topsail (62-28 on Tuesday) and New Hanover (67-41 on Friday), Rivers averaged 29.5 points, 12 rebounds and 4.5 steals. 

Mia Seemadray, Ashley: Connected on four 3-pointers for 16 points and added four assists in a 62-28 victory over Topsail on Tuesday. Seemadray finished with 11 points, six rebounds and three steals on Friday against New Hanover to keep the Screaming Eagles unbeaten in the MEC.

Icess Tresvik, Hoggard: Led the Vikings in points in both Mideastern Conference contests. She finished with 12 against Laney on Tuesday and 11 to go along with five steals in limited action against North Brunswick on Friday.

GIRLS SWIMMING

Laurie-Anne Bazinet, Hoggard: At Friday’s New Hanover County Championship, the senior won the 100 freestyle in 58.07 and 100 backstroke in 1:05.11. She was also on the victorious 200 freestyle relay (1:48.64).

Liz Boldt, South Brunswick: Finished first in the 100 butterfly (1:04.05) and second in the 100 backstroke (1.04.89) at Thursday’s meet at Brunswick CC. She also anchored the second-place 200 medley relay 400 freestyle relay that achieved regional qualifying times.

Madison Hoover, Topsail: Continued her stellar senior season by winning all four events she competed in at Thursday’s meet against South Brunswick and West Brunswick. Hoover won the 100 backstroke (1:03.21), 200 freestyle (2:08.22), 200 medley relay (2:07.38) and 400 freestyle relay (4:10.07) to lead the Pirates to a meet victory.

Joy Ruth Jacocks, Ashley: Talented freshman captured the 500 freestyle (5:50.15) and also swam a leg on the winning 200 medley relay (2:04.70) at Friday’s New Hanover County Championship.

Emma Johnson, Hoggard: Helped the Vikings claim the title at the New Hanover County Championship on Friday by touching the wall first in the 200 IM (2:21.40) and 100 breaststroke (1:08.88).

Paiton Newbill, Topsail: In addition to swimming a leg on the victorious 200 medley relay (2:07.38) and 400 freestyle relay (4:10.07), Newbill also won the 100 freestyle in 1:03.33 on Thursday.

Jalynn Sneed, West Brunswick: Had a pair of individual victories – 200 IM (2:50.32) and 100 breaststroke (1:27.27) – on Thursday in a MEC meet against South Brunswick and Topsail.

WRESTLING

Bryan Aragao, North Brunswick: Won the 182 pound title at the Boneyard Bash at Jack Britt with three pins and a major decision to improve to 32-0 on the season.

Matteo Meehan, New Hanover: Had pins of eight second and 11 seconds in victories over St. Pauls and Fairmont on Thursday.

Marcus Mondragon, Laney: Won 11-9 in the finals at 138 pounds at the two-day Boneyard Bash at Jack Britt. The senior also had three pins in the event.

Riley Monteath, New Hanover: In Thursday’s 42-24 win over Fairmont, Monteath had a pin in 35 seconds at 160 pounds. He also had a second period pin at 170 to help the Wildcats earn a 48-36 win over St. Pauls.

Mark Samuel, Laney: Improved to 35-0 at 106 pounds with four victories at the Boneyard Bash at Jack Britt. Samuel had a pair of tech falls, a pin and a 4-2 decision.
