Spot A Star: March 9-14, 2020

Spot A Star is a list of the top individual performances of the week. Coaches are encourages to submit the names of their athletes who excelled on the field, court or course by 7 p.m. every Sunday. The list will be published each Monday.

BASEBALL

Zane Bloom, Wilmington Christian Academy: In a pair of contests, the senior shortstop went 3-for-4 with a walk, two doubles and two runs. 

Tyler Brooks, Wilmington Christian Academy: In his first varsity start, Brooks threw five innings and allowed on unearned run while striking out four in a dominant 15-3 win at Greenville Christian Academy on Monday.

Cameron Burgess, South Brunswick: Hit .57 (4-for-7) with a home run, five RBI and a run in games against Loris, S.C. and Pender. Burgess also tossed three scoreless innings with five strikeouts.

Sam Fox, Hoggard: Helped the Vikings open Mideastern Conference play with a 9-1 home win over West Brunswick by striking out 10 in a complete game.

Kenny Frank, North Brunswick: Allowed only three hits and struck out seven in 8 1/3 shutout innings of relief to earn the victory in a 3-2, 9-inning victory over Trask on Thursday.

Sam Garcia, Laney: Pitched another gem, striking out 11 and scattering four hits in a complete-game effort to lead the Buccaneers to a 5-0 victory over Coastal Christian on Tuesday.

Hunter Hodges, New Hanover: In five innings on the mound, the UNCW signee allowed only one hits and struck out nine in Tuesday’s 7-0 win over Havelock.

Walker Jenkins, South Brunswick: Freshman went 4-for-6 with two doubles, five RBI and three runs in nonconference games against Loris, S.C. on Tuesday and Pender on Thursday.

Hayden Naylor, Wilmington Christian Academy: Was the hard-luck loser Thursday against Coastal Christian despite allowing only two earned runs and striking out six in his six innings of work.

Chase Nixon, New Hanover: Hit .750 (6-for-8) with three doubles, six RBI and three runs in victories over Havelock and Jacksonville.

Aubrey Smith, South Brunswick: Tossed a two-hit shutout with 13 strikeouts and no walks to give the Cougars a 10-0, 5-inning victory over Pender on Thursday.

BOYS GOLF

Walker Isley, South Brunswick: Claimed medalist honors by five strokes at Tuesday’s Mideastern Conference match at Landfall by shooting a 2-under-par 70. Isley also went under par in the season opener at Pine Valley to earn a second-place finish. The Cougars had the lowest team score in both matches.

BOYS LACROSSE

Jack Marshall, Ashley: Led the way with five goals in a 10-6 victory over Cape Fear Academy on Thursday.

Ryan Wagner, West Brunswick: In victories over South Brunswick and North Brunswick, Wagner had six goals and five assists. He also scooped up 22 ground balls and won 16 of 18 faceoffs.

BOYS TENNIS

Marlon Neveu, Coastal Christian: Picked up a pair of convincing victories at No. 1 singles – 6-3, 6-2 against South Brunswick on Monday and 6-0, 6-0 against Ashley on Wednesday.

BOYS TRACK & FIELD

Jaylin Allen, Hoggard: Won the 100-meter dash in 11.10 and was second in the 200 (22.98) on Thursday to help the Vikings win the Mideastern Conference meet at Laney. Allen was also on the victorious 4×100 and 4×200 relays.

Jieem Bullock, North Brunswick: LSU signee had victories in the 100-meter dash (11.06), high jump (6-2) and long jump (23-2.5) at the home MEC meet on Thursday.

Nathan Lau, Topsail: Was victorious in the shot put with a distance of 42-3 and discus with a throw of 138-7 on Thursday at home.

Joseph Moran, Laney: Crossed the finish line first in the 1,600-meter run (4:30.60) and finished second in the 800 (2:07.62) on Thursday at a home meet.

Casper Powe Jr., Laney: At Thursday’s MEC meet, Powe Jr. finished first in the shot put (43-0) and discus (124-6).

Connor Powe, Laney: Had three first place finishes – 110-meter hurdles (15.37), long jump (21-5) and triple jump (41-0.5) and a second place finish in the 300 hurdles (43.03) at the home Mideastern Conference meet on Thursday.

Luke Scacheri, Ashley: Earned victories in the 1,600-meter run with a time of 4:48 and the 3,200 in 10:06 on Thursday at Topsail to help the Screaming Eagles earn the win. He was also on the victorious 4×800 relay.

Nyjae Williams, Laney: Won the 300-meter hurdles (42.02) and finished second in the 110 hurdles (17.03) and 4×400 relay on Thursday.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Abby Cavanaugh, Cape Fear Academy: Scored five goals and added three assists in a 17-12 victory over West Brunswick on Wednesday.

Devon Cavanaugh, Cape Fear Academy: In Wednesday’s 17-12 win over West Brunswick, the Pittsburgh commit had seven goals and three assists.

Alyssa Fizer, Hoggard: Helped the Vikings earn a 21-11 victory over Topsail on Thursday by finishing with four goals, two assists and six draw controls.

Camille Gannon, South Brunswick: Finished with a hat trick against West Brunswick and found the back of the net four times against Ashley on Friday.

Raegan McGowen, Hoggard: Scored twice and dished out three assists in Thursday’s 21-11 victory over Topsail.

Annaleise Meyers, Hoggard: Finished with a hat trick to guide the Vikings to a 13-9 win over rival Ashley on Tuesday.

Katie Witmer, Hoggard: In victories over Ashley and Topsail, Witmer scored nine goals to go along with six assists and 23 draw controls.

GIRLS SOCCER

Olivia Dail, Wilmington Christian Academy: Finished with a hat trick in Monday’s dominant victory over Greenville Christian Academy.

Peyton Godbey, North Brunswick: Put in all three of her goals in the second half to help the Scorpions open Mideastern Conference play with a 5-1 victory over Topsail.

Emily Mahn, New Hanover: Senior captain played two positions and never left the field while provided excellent leadership in a 3-0 loss to Swansboro on Tuesday.

Mia Marino, Wilmington Christian Academy: Found the back of the net four times and dished out a pair of assists in a 9-1 win over Greenville Christian Academy.

GIRLS TRACK & FIELD

Kamryn Ballard, Laney: Captured the 400-meter dash in 1:04.80 on Thursday at a home Mideastern Conference meet.

Olivia Bufalini, Laney: In her first high school track meet, the freshman won the 800-meter run (2:27.46) and 1,600 (5:15.06).

Ariana Blevins, Topsail: Earned individual victories in the 100 hurdles (17.08) and triple jump (36-0) to help the Pirates win Thursday’s home Mideastern Conference meet.

Nija Bryant, South Brunswick: Won the shot put (30-1.5) and discus (107.6) at Thursday’s Mideastern Conference meet at Laney.

Madison Lofton, Topsail: Led the Pirates a home victory with wins in the 100-meter dash (12.31), 200 (25.93) and 400 (59.71).

Cheyenne Newkirk, Hoggard: Helped the Vikings win Thursday’s meet at Laney by finishing first in the 300-meter hurdles (48.02) and 4×400 relay.

Journey Thompson, Laney: Picked up individual victories in the 100-meter dash (12.59) and 200 (26.63) and was also on the victorious 4×100 relay on Thursday.

SOFTBALL

Addy Howard, Topsail: In Friday’s 9-1 win over North Brunswick, the senior pitcher allowed one run on three hits and struck out 10 in a complete game.

Emma Neeley, Topsail: Scattered six hits and struck out 14 in a complete game to lead the Pirates to a 3-0 win over Richlands on Monday.

Icess Tresvik, Hoggard: Struck out 12 in the circle and also blasted a 2-run home run in Friday’s 4-3 victory over West Brunswick.

Zoey Vincent, Topsail: In victories over Richlands and North Brunswick, Vincent went 4-for-7 with a walk, double, one RBI, three runs and three stolen bases.

Olivia Visconti, Topsail: Went 2-for-3 with a stolen base in both victories to help keep the Pirates unbeaten.
