Eighth grader Mason Shand ran for the game-winning 22-yard touchdown with 6:26 remaining to lead the Eagles to their third straight unbeaten season and New Hanover County title.

“I always try to preach less is more in terms of being fundamentally sound in what we do,” Noble coach Joe Solomon said. “If you keep it simple for the kids, they’ll fight hard for you.”

Shand finished with 48 yards on 13 carries and Tyjhere Crudup added 59 on six carries.

The winning drive consisted of 13 plays and covered 75 yards. Noble (7-0), which has now won 19 straight games since a loss to Roland-Grise in 2016, converted three third downs as well as a 4th-and-11 on a pass over the middle from John Mason to Beau Toups.

Mason completed all four of his pass attempts for 38 yards.

Roland-Grise (6-1) recovered an onside kick at midfield to begin the game and marched 50 yards in 12 plays to take up almost the entire first quarter and build a 6-0 lead on a sneak from quarterback Teague Roach.

The big play of the drive was a 15-yard completion from Roach to Timothy White on 4th-and-5 from the Noble 35.

Noble evened the score on the ensuing possession when Crudup took a pitch and went 55 yards on 4th-and-10.

“The resiliency of this group is what I love best,” Solomon said. “They came back and didn’t hang their heads and that’s all you can ask for.”

The Knights had a great opportunity to take the lead into halftime after the Eagles turned the ball over on downs at their own 22 with 1:11 left in the second quarter. Roland-Grise worked the ball down to the 7-yard line, but a penalty backed them up and were forced to try three consecutive passes that all fell incomplete.

Workhorse Luke Skipper led the Knights with 17 carries for 44 yards.

Murray 14, Trask 6

(Played Wednesday)

The Falcons set a school record for wins with the road victory that featured four turnovers from the defense.

Oran Johnson and Tanner Berry each had an interception and Jarrett Quinlan and Aiden Flynn both recovered a fumble.

Murray (5-2) got on the board first on a 40-yard run from Alex Raeburn. The game-winning touchdown came on a halfback pass as Caleb Robles connected with Casey Gladden. Coen Locklear converted the 2-point attempt.

Trask concluded the season with a 4-3 record.

Holly Shelter 7, Myrtle Grove 0
