BOYS BASKETBALL

New Hanover 56, Topsail 53

Junior forward Lenier Pocknett scored a season-high 18 points to go along with four rebounds and three assists to keep the Wildcats remained unbeaten.

New Hanover (3-0) also got 12 points, three rebounds and five assists from Khalil Genwright as well as 11 points, three rebounds and two assists from Quintell Waddell. Jarrod Vaughn grabbed a team-high five rebounds. 

The Wildcats led 27-15 at halftime and still held an 11-point lead entering the fourth quarter. Topsail (0-1) made things interesting late by scoring 24 points over the final eight minutes. 

New Hanover is back in action Tuesday at Topsail at 7 p.m. The Pirates (0-1) host Laney on Friday at 6:30 p.m.

Topsail 77, New Hanover 28

The Pirates scored at least 17 points in every quarter to cruise to a home victory.

Bella Kross scored eight of her game-high 22 points in the opening quarter to put Topsail (1-2) on top 19-9. The advantage grew to 40-18 at halftime.

Carolina Coria chipped in 13 points and Sophia Manning added 11. Twelve Pirates reached the scoring column.

New Hanover (0-3) got 12 points from Mokyla Taylor as well as nine points and six rebounds from Destiny Newkirk.

Next up for Topsail is a home game against Laney on Friday at 5 p.m. The Wildcats visit Hoggard on Friday at 7 p.m.

Trask 45, East Carteret 40

Anisa Lewis had a double-double with 25 points and 14 rebounds and the Titans were able to hold on after building an 11-point halftime lead.

Lewis had nine first quarter points to put Trask (3-0) up 17-7. They led 23-12 at halftime and 35-28 after three quarters.

Julia Plunk hit a pair of 3-pointers and finished with eight points, while Leanna Pfeiffer grabbed 10 rebounds in the victory.

The Titans return to the court Friday at home against Croatan at 6 p.m.

Mideastern Conference Meet

At UNCW

Hoggard freshman Maya Brigman narrowly defeated teammate Lillian Hulls to earn the meet victory.

Brigman finished with a score of 158.175 and Hulls was right behind with a score of 157.95.

On the boys side, Hoggard senior Jason Bunn scored a 264.3 to easily defeat New Hanover’s Nathan Nichols (169.8).

BOYS SWIMMING

Ashley 90, Laney 68

At Wilmington YWCA (From Tuesday)

Logan Butner, Patrick Furbay, Cian Post and Sean Setzer teamed up to win three relays and all four also won an individual event to lift Ashley to the meet victory.

They won the 200 medley in 1:44.18, the 200 freestyle in 1:34.05 and the 400 freestyle in 3:30.41.

Butner was also victorious in the 500 freestyle (5:13.87), while Furbay touched the wall first in the 100 freestyle (51.98). Post won the 100 breaststroke in 1:12.63 and Setzer claimed the 50 freestyle with a time of 23.57.

The Screaming Eagles also got a pair of victories from Ben Page (200 freestyle in 2:05.24 and 100 backstroke in 1:05.26).

Laney’s wins came from Timothy Niven in the 200 IM (2:31.33) and Jacob Lanier in the 100 butterfly (1:04.12).

GIRLS SWIMMING

Laney 101, Ashley 59

At Wilmington YWCA (From Tuesday)

Laney standout Jenna Grill won all four events she competed in to help the Buccaneers earn the meet victory.

Grill touched the wall first in the 50 freestyle (24.91) and 100 butterfly (1:00.43). She was also on the winning 200 medley (1:58.93) and 200 freestyle (1:48.20) relays.

Laney also got individual victories from Austin Gerock in the 100 freestyle (59.79), Liza McQueen in the 200 IM (2:34.20) and Madi Joy in the 100 backstroke (1:03.66). Gerock and Joy were also on both winning relays and McQueen was on the 200 freestyle relay.

Ashley ended the meet with a win in the 400 freestyle relay. Kinsey Ginsberg, Joy Ruth Jacocks, Cadence Eder and Alana Reichow finished in 4:06.19.

The Screaming Eagles got individual victories from Ginsberg in the 100 breaststroke (1:16.71), Eder in the 500 freestyle (6:02.25) and Katie Kornegay in the 200 freestyle (2:36.87).
