AMERICAN LEGION BASEBALL

Port City Post 545 12, Wilmington Patriots 2 (6 innings)

Ryan Sproull (Laney) threw a one-hitter with nine strikeouts to lift Port City to a mercy-rule home victory.

Both runs Sproull allowed were unearned. He also had a single, two walks and an RBI at the plate.

Port City (2-5, 2-5 Area II) collected 15 hits, including three from Grant Pyrtle (Laney) and two a piece from Dalton MacCallum (Laney) and Ayden Rogers (Laney). 

Wilmington (1-4, 1-4) scored both its runs in the top of the first inning, but the lead was short lived.

Port City immediately responded with three runs of its own in the bottom of the frame. Pyrtle’s double allowed Chase Patterson (Southeastern CC) to score the go-ahead run.

Patterson drove in three runs and scored twice. MacCallum, Rogers and Hampton Roderick (Laney) all crossed the plate two times.

Nick DiSanti (Wilmington Christian Academy) had Wilmington’s lone hit.

Next up for Port City is a home game against Hamlet Post 49 on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Wilmington travels to Hope Mills Post 32 at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Wilmington Post 10 8, Fuquay-Varina Post 116 2

Bromley Thornton (New Hanover) and Coleton Norris (Hoggard) combined for seven strikeouts over six innings in the nonconference victory at Campbell University.

It was a rematch of last year’s state championship game, which was won by Fuquay-Varina. 

Wilmington (10-2) was led offensively by Spencer Nolan (Hoggard) and Logan Ponnett (Hoggard), who had two hits a piece.

They are back in action Wednesday night at 7 p.m. against Hamlet Post 49 at Buck Hardee Field.
