The night was emotional for everyone and with good reason.

With no definitive answer on whether or not high school sports will resume this spring, Friday’s contests across the state were extremely meaningful.

Prior to the Mideastern Conference softball opener between Hoggard and West Brunswick, the Vikings held a senior night for Jaclyn Jordan just in case it was her final game.

It was then a pair of freshmen who lifted Hoggard to a 4-3 walk-off victory in the bottom of the seventh inning.

“I really hope it doesn’t get any worse than this and we can come back and keep playing,” said Hoggard junior standout Icess Tresvik.”

Allie Royal led off the bottom of the seventh inning with a walk and was lifted for pinch runner Maddie Scanlan. Skyler Walker followed with another walk and both runners moved up a base on a wild pitch.

Facing a 3-1 count, Sydney Ciamillo hit a ground ball to the right side of the infield and fellow freshman Scanlan beat the throw home for the winning run.

Hoggard (2-2, 1-0 Mideastern) got another big game from Tresvik. She allowed only two hits and struck out 12 in a complete game to earn the victory in the circle and also put the home team up 3-2 in the third inning with a long two-run homer.

“I was really pleased that I lasted all seven innings, but my arm felt good,” Tresvik said. “I’ve been keeping it in shape and icing.”

West Brunswick (1-2) scored in the top of the first inning when Hailey Wilson led off with a walk, moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a fielder’s choice. The advantage grew to 2-0 on an RBI single from Gracie Griffin that scored Faith Coleman in the third.

Griffin delivered a two-out double to right field to score Coleman again in the fifth inning to even the score. Griffin didn’t factor into the decision despite striking out four in 4 1/3 innings before giving way to Anna Frazier.

Both teams will be off until at least April 6 as the NCHSAA has suspended all high school sports activity due to the coronavirus. A decision on whether or not the season will resume at that point will be made sometime within the next three weeks.
