Chris Konrady (Laney) tossed a complete game with three strikeouts to help Port City pick up its first victory of the season.
Port City (1-2, 1-2 Area II) struck first in the bottom of the first inning when Brooks Byers scored on an error. They took the lead for good in the fourth inning on a one-out single from Garrett Wolff (Laney) that scored Josh Eure (Laney).
Byers scored on a passed ball and Grayson Irwin (Laney) singled home Wolff in the sixth inning for Port City’s final run.
Byers went 2-for-3 with a walk and a stolen base from the leadoff spot. Toby Stone (Laney) worked three walks.
Port City plays at Buck Hardee Field against Wilmington Post 10 at 6 p.m. Sunday.
Wilson Post 13 17, Pleasure Island Post 129 10
Pleasure Island raced out to a 10-0 lead and was three outs away from a mercy rule victory before the wheels fell off.
Wilson scored nine runs in the fifth inning and added eight more in the sixth to take the nonconference victory on the first day of action at the Pitt County American Legion Showcase.
Leadoff hitter Branton Jernigan (Ashley) had a big day for Pleasure Island (6-4), going 3-for-4 with two doubles, a triple, three RBI and a run. Michael Brannin (Ashley) also had three hits, including a two-run home run, three RBI and a run.
Tyler McNeil (Ashley) blasted a two-run homer in the top of the fourth inning to put Pleasure Island on top 10-0, but they recorded only two singles the rest of the game. McNeil finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and two runs.
Pleasure Island is back in action at the showcase on Sunday at 7 p.m. against host Pitt County Post 39.
