Rocco Farmintino (Ashley) blasted a leadoff home run and Wilmington Post 10’s offense didn’t slow down in a 17-1, five-inning American Legion Baseball season-opening victory at Hampstead Post 167 on Monday.

“The team that we have this year is unbelievable,” Farmintino said. “The most important part is being relaxed and having fun as a team. The way you play the best baseball is by having fun with your teammates and being relaxed.”

A 12-run fourth inning that saw 15 batters come to the plate put the game out of reach. Shane Nolan (Topsail) had a two-run double to increase the lead to 8-0 and later in the inning delivered a three-run home run to left field to complete the scoring.

Wilmington (1-0, 1-0 Area II) finished with 10 hits and nine walks. Alex Sniffen (New Hanover) was 3-for-3 with a double, walk, three RBI and two runs. Nolan finished 2-for-3 with a hit by pitch, five RBI and two runs. Max Hildreth (New Hanover/Memphis) had a pair of hits, including a double, an RBI and three runs.

Every player in Wilmington’s starting lineup reached base and scored at least once.

“There is no soft spot, so teams aren’t going to be able to pitch around anyone.” Farmintino said. “If you make a mistake, we are going to make you pay for it. That showed tonight and that’s going to show throughout the rest of the season.”

Sam Fox (Hoggard), Hunter Hodges (New Hanover), Alex Holland (Topsail/Catawba) Austin Kenyon (Hoggard) and Mitch Baddour (New Hanover/William Peace) all saw time on the mound and combined to limit Hampstead to only four hits.

Walker Parks (North Brunswick) led the Hampstead (2-5m 2-5) offense with a single and a hit by pitch. Josh Barnhill (Pender) worked a leadoff walk in the bottom of the fifth and scored the lone run on a wild pitch.
