Area athletes prepare for Powerade State Games
The 2019 Powerade State Games of North Carolina got underway earlier this month and continue through June 23.
Over the next two weeks, a handful of athletes will be representing our area. The State Games began in 1986 and are held annually in and around Charlotte.
Pool play for baseball begins Thursday and seven local players were selected to the Region 2 team. They are: Tanner Babson (West Brunswick), Trey Clucas (Hoggard), Sam Fox (Hoggard), Sam Garcia (Laney), Hunter Hodges (New Hanover), Barrett Swails (Ashley) and Drew Tyndall (Ashley). North Brunswick head coach Dustin Medlin is serving as an assistant coach for the team.Games will be played through June 16 at BB&T Ballpark (home of the Charlotte Knight) and UNC Charlotte.
Four boys lacrosse players will participate in East-West All-Star Games on June 18-19 at Queens University. Connor Jones of Hoggard will play in the rising juniors game on June 18. A day later, Josh Failla and Tyler McCarthy of Hoggard along with Kyle Hatcher of New Hanover will participate in the rising seniors game.
Nine girls lacrosse players will participate in the rising seniors game on June 19. They are: Ayden Arreola (Topsail), Kirsten Chalmers (Ashley), Alyssa Fizer (Hoggard), Emmie Foxall (Ashley), Jane Hobbs (Topsail), Payton Jones (Laney), Elise Knox (Hoggard), Kennedy Martin (Laney) and Avery Pyrtle (Laney).
Softball will also take place on June 18-19 at UNC Charlotte and Hornets Nest Park. Gracie Griffin of West Brunswick along with Madalyn White of Trask were selected to the Region 2 team.The girls soccer East team will be coached by Ashley assistant Hastin McGill and it features six area players – McKenna Gardner (Ashley), EB Hancock (Ashley), Lindley Schutte (Ashley), Kyla Stewart (Ashley), Joi Sturdivant (West Brunswick) and Kaylee Wiltshire (North Brunswick).
On the boys side, New Hanover’s Landon James was the only local player selected to the East team.
Soccer games will be played on June 22-23 at Queens University.
