Shining at the Next Level: March 14-20, 2019
New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender counties produce a large number of athletes that continue their careers at the next level. Each week, this list will feature a number of area athletes who are finding success in the college ranks.

Sr. pitcher Brandon Boone, Appalachian State (2015 Hoggard grad): Started and pitched three scoreless innings with one hits and four strikeouts to earn the victory in Tuesday’s 13-0 victory over N.C. Central.
Sr. infielder/pitcher Trey Croom, N.C. Wesleyan (2015 New Hanover grad): Had a big week, hitting .474 (9-for-19) with one double, one triple, one home run, seven RBI and six runs to help the Battling Bishops go 4-1.
Fr. catcher Colby Emmertz, East Tennessee State (2018 Topsail grad): Went 6-for-12 with two home runs, three RBI and four runs in a three-game sweep over NJIT. In Saturday’s 12-2 victory, Emmertz blasted his first two collegiate homers.
Jr. outfielder Cory Everett, Erskine (2015 New Hanover grad): In three contests, Everett went 5-for-13 with his seventh homer, two RBI and two runs.
Soph. infielder/pitcher Mike Gans, Lenoir CC (2017 Hoggard grad): In a three-game series against Pitt CC, Gans went 5-for-13 with three doubles, one RBI and three runs.
Jr. outfielder Chris Graham, College of Charleston (2015 North Brunswick grad): Hit .636 (7-for-11) with a double, two RBI, two runs and stolen bases in a three-game sweep over Furman.
Fr. pitcher Zach Kelly, Queens (2018 South Brunswick grad): Struck out a career-high eight batters and allowed only two earned runs over seven innings at Tusculum on Friday.
Sr. pitcher Sam Luchansky, Belmont Abbey (2015 Topsail grad): In nine innings out of the bullpen, Luchansky allowed two runs and struck out 12 without issuing a walk.
R-Jr. infielder Jake Madole, UNC Asheville (2015 Topsail grad): Helped the Bulldogs take two of three games against USC Upstate by going 5-for-10 with two home runs, five RBI and three runs.Jr. infielder Brad Pennington, N.C. Wesleyan (2016 Hoggard grad): Went 4-for-5 with a double, two home runs, eight RBI and two runs in Friday’s 15-3 win over Greensboro. In five games, Pennington hit .500 (10-for-20) with a double, three homers, nine RBI and eight runs. He was named the USA South Conference’s Baseball Player of the Week from March 11-17.
R-Jr. pitcher Shelton Perkins, James Madison (2015 North Brunswick grad): In Friday’s 1-0 victory at Cal State Fullerton, Perkins allowed only one hit and struck out six in 3 1/3 scoreless innings to earn his first save of the season.
Fr. catcher Matt Suggs, UNCW (2018 Hoggard grad): Drove in his first two collegiate runs and went 2-for-3 with a walk and a run in Friday’s 15-6 win at Memphis.
Soph. Jackson Tyler, Carson Newman (2017 New Hanover grad): Finished tied for 19th after shooting 74-74-71 at the Bobby Nichols Invitational at Sevierville Golf Club in Tennessee. Carson-Newman finished third in the 15-team field.
Fr. Xavier Williams, N.C. A&T (2018 South Brunswick grad): Shot 81-74-75 to finish tied for 10th at the Cape Fear National Intercollegiate.
Soph. midfielder Luke Frankeny, Mount St. Mary’s (2017 Hoggard grad): Put home the game-winning goal with 5:45 left in the game in Saturday’s 10-7 win over Bryant. Frankeny also scored in the second quarter to put Mount St. Mary’s up 3-1 and assisted on the team’s ninth goal.
Fr. midfielder Koby Hatcher, Lenoir-Rhyne (2018 New Hanover grad): Scored his first collegiate goal in Saturday’s 21-3 victory over Tusculum.
Sr. attack Jake Trafton, Mars Hill (2015 Hoggard grad): In a pair of road losses, Trafton scored three goals, dished out two assists and scooped up seven ground balls.
MEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Soph. De’Shawn Ballard, Appalachian St. (2017 Laney grad): Was on the 4×100 relay team that finished second with a time of 41-24 at the Charlotte 49er Classic.
Jr. Dylan Kraft, East Carolina (2015 Trask grad): Placed seventh out of 45 competitors in the javelin with a distance of 176-6 at the Charlotte 49er Classic.
Jr. Dandrell Utley (2015 New Hanover grad): Had a distance of 22-7 in the long jump to finish seventh at the Charlotte 49er Classic.
Jr. KeAndre Yeoman, UNCW (2016 North Brunswick grad): Placed third in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 55.95 at the UNCW Invitational.
Soph. infielder Mckenzie Benton, Southeastern CC (2017 West Brunswick grad): Helped the Rams pick up a 6-2 victory over Brookdale on Tuesday by hit a home run, driving in two runs and scoring twice.
Fr. outfielder Savannah Capobianco, Louisburg (2018 Laney grad): Hit her first collegiate home run in a 10-4 victory at Patrick Henry on Sunday.
Sr. infielder Schae Dickson, LIU Brooklyn (2015 Ashley grad): Hit .381 (8-for-21) with two doubles, three RBI and five runs over a six-game stretch.Jr. infielder Jordan Floyd, Wingate (2016 Ashley grad): Went 8-for-14 with one double, two home runs, six RBI and three runs in four games.
Fr. catcher/infielder Alleigh Himes, Winston-Salem St. (2018 North Brunswick grad): In four victories, Himes hit .384 (5-for-13) with four doubles, two RBI and five runs.
Soph. infielder Mackenzie Williams, Southeastern CC (2017 West Brunswick grad): Went 2-for-3 with a home run, three RBI and a run in Friday’s 11-7 loss at Louisburg.
Soph. catcher Pearson Yopp, East Carolina (2017 Ashley grad): Belted her first career home run in Saturday’s 11-1 victory over Cornell at the George Mason Invitational.
Soph. Ayonna Cotten, Cape Fear CC (2017 New Hanover grad): In a pair of NJCAA Division II National Tournament games, Cotten averaged 17.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 9 assists. She had 22 points, 12 assists and eight rebounds in Wednesday’s 116-105 victory over North Iowa Area CC that put the Sea Devils in the Final Four.
Fr. midfielder/attack Hannah Jones, Lenoir-Rhyne (2018 Topsail grad): Scored her first collegiate goal in Saturday’s 18-7 victory at Tusculum.
Soph. attack Elizabeth Peasley, Averett (2017 Laney grad): In back-to-back wins at Huntingdon (15-7 on Saturday) and at LaGrange (21-5 on Sunday), Peasley scored 13 goals to go along with one assist.
Fr. midfielder Hannah Scharf (2018 South Brunswick grad): Scored four goals and added one assist in a pair of close victories.
Soph. Kara Ferner, Christopher Newport (2017 Hoggard grad): In Friday’s 9-0 win over Methodist, Ferner won 8-1 at No. 3 doubles and 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles. Ferner also picked up a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 2 doubles to help the Captains beat Centre 7-2 on Sunday.
WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD
Soph. Autumn James, Western Carolina (2017 New Hanover grad): Finished eighth in the triple jump with a distance of 38-0 at the Charlotte 49er Classic.
Fr. Jelonnie Smith, Appalachian St. (2018 South Brunswick grad): Placed seventh in the 400 meters (57.03) and was a member of the 4×100 relay that finished fourth with a time of 47.39 at the Charlotte 49er Classic.
