Spot A Star is a list of the top individual performances of the week. Coaches are encourages to submit the names of their athletes who excelled on the field by 7 p.m. every Sunday. The list will be published each Monday.

BASEBALL

Sam Fox, Hoggard: Tossed a complete game and allowed only five hits while striking out two in a 1-0 loss at New Hanover on Wednesday.

Sam Garcia, Laney: Didn’t factor into the decision, but pitched a solid 6 2/3 innings in Wednesday’s dramatic 2-1 victory over Ashley. The southpaw allowed only one run and struck out four.

Dylan Jeffries, West Brunswick: Helped the Trojans pick up a 3-2 home conference win over Hoggard by allowing one earned run on four hits while striking out eight in a complete game.

Branton Jernigan, Ashley: Freshman finished 2-for-4 with an RBI in Wednesday’s 2-1 loss at Laney.

Josh Kidd, Ashley: Allowed only two hits and struck out nine in 6 1/3 innings against Laney before reaching the 105-pitch limit.

Blake Walston, New Hanover: Struck out 16 in a four-hit shutout against rival Hoggard on Wednesday. In two games at the plate, Walston went 4-for-6 with one triple, three runs and one RBI.

BOYS GOLF

Jacob Hall, West Brunswick: Senior shot a career-low 81 to help the Trojans finish second as a team at Monday’s home match at Lockwood Folly.

Sam Hewett, West Brunswick: Helped the Trojans finish second at Monday’s home MEC match at Lockwood Folly by shooting a career-best 80.

Ryan Jahr, West Brunswick: Continued his solid play by shooting a 76 at Monday’s home match at Lockwood Folly. The freshman is currently third in the MEC in scoring average.

BOYS LACROSSE

Eli Copeland, Topsail: Finished the week with nine goals, six assists and five ground balls.

Owen Johnson, Cape Fear Academy: Freshman goalkeeper made 23 saves in Saturday’s 10-9 victory over Porter-Gaud, S.C.

Henry Murtagh, Cape Fear Academy: Led the Hurricanes to three victories over the weekend by scoring a total of 16 goals.

Tucker Parks, Topsail: Sophomore midfielder scored five goals to go along with eight ground balls and one assists in a pair of contests.

Reed Sweyer, Cape Fear Academy: Scooped up 17 ground balls and also scored two goals and dished out four assists playing as a defenseman in three victories.

BOYS TENNIS

Holland Baynard, New Hanover: Senior standout continued his dominance, winning both singles matches 6-0, 6-0 and only dropping one game in doubles.

Kitch Jones, Coastal Christian: Battled from a set down to send his singles match to a tiebreaker, but ultimately suffered a 6-4, 5-7, 10-7 loss on Thursday at Hoggard.

Jared Pruzan, Coastal Christian: Played well in a hard-fought 6-3, 3-6, 10-4 defeat at No. 4 singles during Thursday’s match at Hoggard.

Griffith Waren, New Hanover: Helped the Wildcats claim at least a share of the Mideastern Conference title by dominating at No. 1 singles and doubles. He won both singles matches 6-0, 6-0 and dropped only one game in two doubles matches.

BOYS TRACK & FIELD

Coastal Christian 4×800 relay: The team of Jackson Garrett, Nicholas McConell, Luke Lecci and Isaiah Arnold won by nearly seven seconds, crossing the finish line in 8:24.50 at Saturday’s Screaming Eagle Invitational.

Jieem Bullock, North Brunswick: Talented junior won three events at Saturday’s Screaming Eagles Invitational at Ashley. He finished the 110-meter hurdles in 14.96 and also captured the long jump (21-0) and high jump (6-6).

GIRLS LACROSSE

Sydney Beckwith, Hoggard: In victories over New Hanover (12-1 on Tuesday) and West Brunswick (14-3 on Thursday), Beckwith finished with five goals and four assists.

Delaney Popella, Topsail: Senior leader has scored 10 goals to go along with three assists and six caused turnovers in the past two games.

Katie Witmer, Hoggard: Helped keep the Vikings unbeaten in Mideastern Conference play by finishing with seven goals, eight ground balls and 12 draw controls in two wins.

GIRLS SOCCER

Ashley Ellington, Laney: Stopped all six shots she faced to earn the clean sheet in Tuesday’s 3-0 victory at Ashley.

Grayson Harris, New Hanover: Put home a pair of goals in Friday’s 3-1 win over North Brunswick.

Anisa Lewis, Trask: Finished with a hat trick on five shots in a Coastal 8 Conference match at SW Onslow.

Izzy Newton, Laney: Controlled the midfield and dished out a pair of assists to lead the Buccaneers to a key 3-0 victory at Ashley on Tuesday.

Ainsley Norr, Hoggard: Scored two goals and dished out two assists in a 9-0 victory over West Brunswick and also had one goal and one assist in a 4-1 win over New Hanover.

Leana Pfieffer, Trask: Sophomore goalkeeper finished with 20 saves in a 5-3 loss to SW Onslow.

Zoe Pitts, Laney: Scored the game-winning goal in the fourth minute during Tuesday’s 3-0 win at rival Ashley.

Betsy Wheeler, Coastal Christian: Freshman goalkeeper finished with 37 saves in three games, including 15 against Ashley and 14 against Asheville Christian.

Erin Willis, Hoggard: Helped the Vikings pick up three victories by finishing with five goals and an assist. She scored the game-winning goal in the 65th minute of Saturday’s 1-0 victory over Charlotte Latin.

GIRLS TRACK & FIELD

Ashley 4×800 relay: The team of Emma Holton, Paxton Chitty, Angelina DiBlasi and Bianca Copeman set a new school record by finishing in 10:10.48 at Saturday’s Screaming Eagle Invitational.

Reagan Haney, Ashley: Sophomore set a new personal best by clearing 5-4 to win the event at the Screaming Eagle Invitational on Saturday.

Keyana Yeoman, North Brunswick: At Saturday’s Screaming Eagle Invitational, Yeoman won the 100-meter hurdles (15:12), 300 hurdles (47.27), 4×100 relay (49.33) and 4×200 relay (1:43.97).

SOFTBALL

Jaclyn Jordan, Hoggard: In three games, the junior went 5-for-13 with one stolen base, four RBI and four runs.

Lauren LaBelle, Topsail: In Tuesday’s 12-2 mercy-rule victory over North Brunswick, the junior went 3-for-4 with one double, three RBI and one run.

Jesse Mathis, Hoggard: Was dominant in the circle, striking out 40 and allowing only five earned runs in 21 innings over three games. The senior also went 5-for-11 with two doubles, one triple, three RBI and two runs at the plate.

Jordyn Rascoe, North Brunswick: Went 4-for-6 with two walks, one double five stolen bases, three RBI and three runs in Mideastern Conference games against Topsail and New Hanover.

Jamie Reece, North Brunswick: In a pair of contests, Reece reached base seven times (three hits, two walks, two hit by pitch). She also had one stolen base, three runs and one RBI.

Lauren Strnad, Topsail: ECU commit went 2-for-2 with a pair of walks, one stolen base, three runs and an RBI in a 12-2 win over North Brunswick.

Icess Tresvik, Hoggard: Hit .333 (4-for-12) with three walks, one home run, five stolen bases, five RBI and four runs in games against South View, New Hanover and West Brunswick.

Olivia Visconti, Topsail: Finished 3-for-4 with two RBI and one run to help the Pirates take down North Brunswick.

Tyesha Williams, Topsail: Went 2-for-2 with two walks, one triple, one stolen base, three runs and two RBI in Tuesday’s victory at North Brunswick.
