Spot A Star is a list of the top individual performances of the week. Coaches are encourages to submit the names of their athletes who excelled on the field by 7 p.m. every Sunday. The list will be published each Monday.
Ashton Evans, Ashley: In Tuesday’s 2-1 playoff win over Rolesville, the senior hit the game-winning two-run double and also picked up the save.
Chase Hall, Laney: Scattered a pair of singles and struck out five in 7 2/3 innings during Friday’s dramatic 2-1 extra-inning win over Fuquay-Varina.
Will Helms, Wilmington Christian Academy: Had a great week on the mound to guide the Patriots to the NCCSA 2A state title. Helms tossed a total of 11 1/3 innings and struck out 13. He didn’t allow an earned run in six innings in the championship game Saturday against Wilson Christian Academy.
Josh Kidd, Ashley: Helped the Screaming Eagles pick up their first postseason victory since 2013 by scattering three hits and striking out nine in six scoreless innings during Tuesday’s 2-1 victory over Rolesville.
Kyle Smith, New Hanover: Went 3-for-4 with a home run, five RBI and two runs to help the Wildcats easily defeat Gray’s Creek in the second round of the 3A playoffs on Friday.
Toby Stone, Laney: Delivered the walk-off single in the eighth inning to send the Buccaneers to the third round of the 4A playoffs with a 2-1 win over Fuquay-Varina. Stone finished the game 3-for-4 with a double.
Blake Walston, New Hanover: In Tuesday’s win over Union Pines, the southpaw struck out five and didn’t allow a hit in four innings. He went 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs in Friday’s mercy-rule victory over Gray’s Creek.
Walker Isley, South Brunswick: Finished second at the 3A East Regional at Reedy Creek Golf Course by shooting a 1-under-par 71.
Matt Hause, Hoggard: Was the team’s top finisher (tied for eighth with a 78) at the 4A East Regional at The Emerald on Monday. The Vikings finished with a total score of 326 to place third and qualify for the state tournament.Max Johnson, Topsail: Qualified for the 3A State Championship in a playoff for the second year in a row after shooting a 76 on Tuesday at Reedy Creek Golf Course.
Harrison Wierse, Topsail: Senior shot a 75 to finish eighth at the 3A East Regional and earn a berth in the state championship.
Smith Anderson, New Hanover: In a pair of 1A/2A/3A playoff contests, Anderson scored eight goals and dished out three assists.
Cameron Arne, Cape Fear Academy: Talented freshman put home four goals and added an assist to help the Hurricanes advance to the NCISAA Division II semifinals.
Eli Copeland, Topsail: In victories over Orange (12-7 on Tuesday) and New Hanover (12-11 on Friday), the senior scored six goals and dished out three assists.
Kyle Hatcher, New Hanover: Talented junior had five goals and five assists in Tuesday’s 17-14 victory over Greenville Rose and then added four goals and an assist on Friday at Topsail.
Henry Murtagh, Cape Fear Academy: Helped the Hurricanes open the playoffs with a dominant home victory by scoring eight goals and adding four assists on Saturday.
Car Sessoms, Topsail: Finished with 23 saves in a pair of wins to help the Pirates reach the 1A/2A/3A East final.
Reed Sweyer, Cape Fear Academy: Scooped up a team-best 18 ground balls in Saturday’s 19-4 playoff victory over Cary Christian School.
Jake Volpe, Topsail: Had a hat trick in both games and also scored the game-winning goal with 39.3 seconds left on Friday to lift the Pirates to a 12-11 victory over New Hanover in the third round of the playoffs.
Westley Gaines and Griffith Waren, New Hanover: The duo reached the 3A doubles state championship match for the second year in a row.
BOYS TRACK & FIELD
Jieem Bullock, North Brunswick: Won the long jump (24-3.5) and finished second in the high jump (6-6) at Saturday’s 3A East Regional.
AJ McNeill, South Brunswick: Sophomore was third in the discus with a throw of 133-1 at Saturday’s 3A East Regional.Pender: The Patriots captured the 1A Mideast title with 105 points thanks to a pair of relay wins from Tylek Bordeaux, Lonnie Shivers, Lavell Henry and Makhel Henry. The team captured the 4×100 relay (43.57) and 4×200 relay (1:30.70). Individual victories came from: Makhel Henry (11.34 in 100-meter dash), Shivers (23.01 in 200) and Malcolm McLean (19-10 in long jump).
Hoggard defense: The group consisting of Taylor Frye, Julie Wilkerson, Sydney Lee, Deja Tucci and Maddie Schoninger stepped up in a big way and kept the Vikings in the game against three-time defending state champion Cardinal Gibbons on Friday.
Brooke Barton, Coastal Christian: In Thursday’s 6-3 victory over Cape Fear Academy, the junior had a goal and two assists.
Courtney Dwertman, Laney: Finished with a hat trick in a dominant 6-2 victory over Wakefield in the second round of the 4A playoffs on Friday.
Jaeden Earle, Coastal Christian: Scored a pair of second half goals to help the Centurions down Cape Fear Academy on Thursday in the second round of the NCISAA 3A playoffs. She also had an assist against Hickory Grove Christian.
Ashley Ellington, Laney: Goalkeeper stopped seven shots to help the Buccaneers earn a 6-2 win over Wakefield on Friday.
Anne Frances Frazier, Cape Fear Academy: In Thursday’s playoff match at Coastal Christian, the sophomore scored on a pair of long-range free kicks.Libby Moore, Cape Fear Academy: Scored in the 10th, 22nd and 76th minutes to help the Hurricanes earn a 4-0 victory over Grace Christian School in the first round of the playoffs on Tuesday.
Parker Ormsby, Laney: In Friday’s win over Wakefield, Ormsby had two goals and an assist.
Anna Smith, Coastal Christian: Senior forward had a goal and an assist on Thursday against Cape Fear Academy and had a goal in her final high school contest Friday at Hickory Grove Christian.
Erin Willis, Hoggard: Put home both goals in Friday’s 2-0 victory over Cardinal Gibbons that sent the top-seeded Vikings into the third round of the 4A playoffs.
GIRLS TRACK & FIELD
Nija Bryant, South Brunswick: Qualified for the 3A State Championship by placing third in the discus (99-7) on Saturday at at the East Regional.
Daisy Hearn, Pender: At Saturday’s 1A Mideast Regional, Hearn won the wheelchair shot put (8-10.5) and wheelchair discus (20-5).
Faith Lana, Pender: Helped the Patriots finish second as a team at regionals by winning the high jump (5-2) and finishing second in the long jump (15-5) and triple jump (32-9).
Courtney Lines, North Brunswick: Easily won the regional long jump title with a distance of 18-7.5.
Madison Lofton, Topsail: Junior captured the 100-meter dash (12.26) and 200 (24.92) on Saturday at the 3A East Regional.Saniya Rivers, Laney: Won the high jump at Saturday’s 4A East Regional by clearing 5-6.
Sonti Robinson, Pender: Was victorious in the shot put with a toss of 32-10 at Saturday’s 1A Mideast Regional.
Natalie Tyner, Laney: Cruised to the title in the 3,200-meter run at the 4A East Regional by crossing the finish line in 10:50.21.
Keyana Yeoman, North Brunswick: Qualified for the 3A State Championship in four events by winning the 100-meter hurdles (14.77), 300 hurdles (45.30), 4×200 relay (1:42.60) and finishing second in the 4×100 (48.89) at Saturday’s regional.
Sydney Hartgrove, Topsail: In Friday’s 6-5 victory over Western Alamance, the sophomore shortstop belted a two-run homer and scored twice.
Tristen Horrell, Laney: Tossed a no-hitter with 10 strikeouts and only one walk in in Tuesday’s mercy-rule victory over Overhills in the first round of the 4A playoffs. The senior also went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and one RBI.
Addy Howard, Topsail: Picked up a pair of victories in the circle by allowing four earned run and striking out 16 in 14 innings.
Sarah Manis, Laney: In a pair of playoff games, Manis went 4-for-7 with a double, four RBI and three runs
Sydney Short, Hoggard: Hit a walk-off single with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Vikings a 4-3 victory over Lumberton in the second round of the 4A playoffs Friday night.More Spot A Star Posts
