2018-19 Girls Basketball Player of the Year: Saniya Rivers
It’s time to reveal the Winter All-Coastal Preps teams. Over the next week, you will get to know more about the players of the year while also seeing who made first and second team in wrestling, girls swimming, boys swimming, girls basketball and boys basketball.
The Coastal Preps Girls Basketball Player of the Year is sophomore Saniya Rivers of Laney.
Rivers capped an amazing sophomore season by being named the Gatorade N.C. Girls Basketball Player of the Year. She averaged 24.8 points, 12.4 rebounds, 4.5 steals and 4.1 assists for the Mideastern Conference champs.
After guiding the Buccaneers to a 14-0 conference record, Rivers helped them win a second straight tournament title. Laney reached the fourth round of the 4A playoffs before being eliminated by eventual runner-up Southeast Raleigh. The Buccaneers finished with a record of 28-2.
Rivers is on pace to become the all-time leading scorer in Laney history. She surpassed the 1,000-point mark in a road win over Hoggard on Feb. 1 and enters her junior season with 1,152 points. Currently ranked as the No. 7 sophomore in the country, Rivers is being recruited by some of the most prominent programs in the country.
