Hoggard 7, Topsail 4

A six-run second inning that featured a three-run home run from Jaxon King and a two-run shot from Maguire Craddock lifted the Vikings to a road win.

Will Mason led off the frame with a single, moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a double from Jacob Savage.

Jason Culley followed with a single to put runners on the corners for King, who hit the 1-0 pitch over the wall in left field.

Bennett McNeill singled with two outs and scored on Craddock’s bomb.

King, McNeill and Craddock all finished 2-for-4.

Hoggard (8-4) got a solid start from Ben Whitehurst, who struck out seven batters and allowed only three runs in six innings. Tucker Bowyer pitched the final inning and recorded three strikeouts.

Joe Hall went 3-for-4 with one RBI and one run scored for Topsail (5-7). Banks Engle also collected a a pair of hits.

New Hanover 7, West Brunswick 4

Aleck Creech pitched a complete game and allowed only one earned run on six hits to pick up the victory.

The junior southpaw finished with 99 pitches, including 62 for strikes. He struck out seven batters and only issued two walks.

New Hanover (7-6) scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning. Luca Kellogg singled home Andrew Jones and a sacrifice fly from Jack Cuba allowed Elliot Melind to cross the plate.

The lead grew to 7-0 in the fifth inning when Cuba singled home Melind and Mason Botbol followed with a two-run single to right field.

Cuba went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles, two RBI and two runs scored. Botbol and Kellogg also had a pair of hits.

West Brunswick (0-13) scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to make things interesting, but Creech got a ground out to strand the bases loaded and end the game.

Laney 13, North Brunswick 3 (6 innings)

Five players had multi-hit performances and the Buccaneers picked up their sixth straight victory to remain alive for a wild card playoff berth.

Elijah Zay went 3-for-4 with two RBI, while Josh Eure finished 2-for-3 with a triple, three RBI and three runs scored.

Laney (8-5) also got two hits and two runs from Gage Henley, Connor Kane and Griffin Sandstrum.

The Buccaneers grabbed a 3-2 lead on Eure’s two-run triple that scored Kane and Eli Rivera. Sandstrum followed with a sacrifice fly to plate Eure.

Sandstrum had a two-run double and Mason Borum delivered a two-run single in the fifth inning to increase the lead to 8-3.

Zay singled home Chuck Jones and Ty Little with two outs in the sixth inning to end the game by mercy rule.

Grant Pyrtle earned the victory by allowing two earned runs on three hits in four innings. He also had four strikeouts. Owen Wells fanned a pair in his two shutout innings to record the save.

North Brunswick’s (4-9) only extra-base hit was a double from Garrett Gore.

WRESTLING

South Brunswick 52, Ashley 30

The Cougars won six of the final seven bouts to secure the road victory.

Ethan Files earned a pin in 2:48 at 182 pounds to put Ashley (11-6, 7-6 Mideastern) on top 24-18, but the Screaming Eagles managed only one more victory.

South Brunswick (10-4, 8-3) evened the score on a 49 second pin from Mason Howlett at 195. Noah Atkinson followed with a pin in 1:56 to put the visitors on top for good.

The Cougars also got pins from Ethan McCullough (0:30 at 120), Devin Hinson (0:26 at 126), Christopher Salgado (1:18 at 152), Noah Harrell (1:38 at 170) and Alex Casper (2:56 at 285). Lilly Prendergast scored four team points with an 11-2 major decision at 113 and Brendan Hoagland received a forfeit at 160.

Ashley opened the dual with pins from Blake Taylor (3:27 at 132), Keegan Herbst (1:53 at 138) and Ryder Mortensen (1:18 at 145). Jack Dillon received a forfeit at 106.

Laney 59, Dixon 12

Sebastian Babe (195 pounds), Kanenan Barriner (220) and Emmanuel Bell (285) all recorded first period pins to put the Buccaneers up 18-0 and they continued to pull away.

Mark Samuel (120), Jayden Harrison (132) and Devon Bell (170) also recorded pins.

Laney’s (18-0) other victories came from Avery Buonocore (18-2 tech fall at 126), Noah Thomas (8-4 decision at 138), Conner Johnson (8-0 major decision at 145), Lucas Carpenter (8-5 decision at 152), Daniel Shoaf (21-2 tech fall at 160) and Charlie Bishop (8-3 decision at 182).

Dixon 45, North Brunswick 33

North Brunswick won six of the nine bouts that were contested, but they gave up five forfeits in the 12-point loss.

Cameron Gurkin had the fastest pin of the night at 220 pounds. He needed only 49 seconds to score six points for North Brunswick (5-10).

The other pins came from Caden Farris (3:21 at 113), Yoel Del Rio (3:55 at 160), Cesar Aguilar (3:38 at 195) and Dante Jimeno (1:17 at 285).

Hunter Campbell also recorded a 13-9 decision at 145.

Laney 64, North Brunswick 12

The Buccaneers received eight forfeits in the dominant win.

Daniel Shoaf recorded a pin in 3:04 at 160 pounds and Charlie Bishop had a pin in 3:19 at 182. Laney (19-0, 11-0 Mideastern) also got a 12-3 major decision from Kanenan Barriner in the final bout of the night at 220.

Mark Samuel (120), Avery Buonocore (126), Jayden Harrison (132), Noah Thomas (138), Conner Johnson (152), Devon Bell (170), Sebastian Babe (195) and Emmanuel Bell (285) all received forfeits.

North Brunswick (5-11, 4-8) got first period pins from Caden Farris (0:32 at 106) and Hunter Campbell (1:21 at 145).

There was a double forfeit at 113.

Havelock 50, West Brunswick 27

The Trojans fell behind 23-0 after the opening four bouts and they couldn’t catch up.

Luke Connick (113 pounds), John Boraski (145), Wayde Sibley (160) and Treston Wiggins (195) all recorded pins for West Brunswick (11-7). The other victory was a 7-3 decision from Michael Smith at 182.

Havelock 78, New Hanover 6

William Lamar recorded a pin at 120 pounds for the Wildcats’ (1-11) lone victory.

Pins from Marquis Shaw (120 pounds), Dominic Grubb Jr. (138), Christian Hardy (195) and Treston Wiggins (220) helped the Trojans cruise.

West Brunswick (12-7, 9-4 Mideastern) also received nine forfeits. They were taken by Luke Connick (113), Wyatt Gentile (126), Noah Farris (132), Oscar Mendoza (145), Wayde Sibley (152), Demitric Stevenson (160), Tripp Hardy (170), Michael Smith (182) and Jason Sessoms (285).

There was a double forfeit at 106.

New Hanover fell to 1-12 overall and 0-10 in the MEC.

GIRLS TENNIS

Hoggard 9, Topsail 0

Elizabeth Vollmin (No. 1), Anna Haskins (No. 3) and Helen Bennington (No. 6) all dropped only one game in singles play and the Vikings won all nine courts to improve to 11-2 on the season.

Macy Morrison (6-1, 6-2 at No. 2), Alex Lee (6-2, 6-2 at No. 4) and Emily Cox (6-0, 6-2 at No. 5) were the other singles winners.

The double teams of Haskins/Lee (No. 2) and Elena Berg/Margaret O’Malley (No. 3) won by identical 8-1 scores. Vollmin and Morrison completed the sweep by winning 8-3 at No. 1

New Hanover 6, West Brunswick 0 (Match 1)

The Wildcats lost only one game in the dominant victory.

Mary Davis Thompson (No. 1), Maloy Basinger (No. 2), Sarah Stephens (No. 3), Caroline Lloyd (No. 5) and Hope Gallop (No. 6) all won 8-0. Christianna Averitt picked up an 8-1 victory at No. 4.

New Hanover 5, West Brunswick 0 (Match 2)

The Wildcats improved to 12-0 on the season by winning one singles match and all four doubles courts.

Freshman Hayden Dooley won the lone singles match by an 8-0 score.

All four doubles teams – Mary Davis Thompson/Maloy Basinger, Sarah Stephens/Christianna Averitt, Caroline Lloyd/Hope Gallop and Molly Weinberg/Anna Hardee – won 8-0.
