Senior forward Brodie Deutsch scored on a volley in the 12th minute to put the Screaming Eagles on top for good.

Ashley (7-2, 1-0 Mideastern) doubled its lead in the 25th minute when Nate Putnam easily tapped in a rebound. Caden Pierce (29th) and Harold Macias (54th) converted penalty kicks.

Macias bent in a 25-yard free kick in the 49th minute to increase the lead to 4-0. He also put home the final goal with 22:28 remaining.

The Screaming Eagles play at Laney on Thursday night at 6. South Brunswick (2-1, 0-1) hosts Topsail at 6 p.m. Thursday.

No. 2 Laney 3, No. 3 New Hanover 2

Alex Walker scored a pair of goals and assisted on the other to help the Buccaneers snap a 10-game losing streak in the series.

Laney’s (7-0-1, 1-0 Mideastern) last victory against the Wildcats prior to Tuesday night came on September 13, 2016. 

Addison Woodcock added a goal and an assist. The other assist came from Benton Tucker.

Both goalkeepers – TJ Webb and Ben Arbogast – played terrific. They combined to make 10 saves.

New Hanover’s (5-2, 0-1) goals were scored by John Franck and Julian Pineda. Luke Carter handed out an assist.

Both teams are back in action Thursday at 6 p.m. The Buccaneers host Ashley, while the Wildcats visit North Brunswick.

No. 1 Hoggard 9, No. 8 North Brunswick 0

The high-powered Vikings converted nine of their 13 shots on goal in the mercy-rule home victory that ended after 64 minutes.

Stone Murrill had a hat trick, while fellow senior Kenan Leber chipped in two goals.

Hoggard (9-0, 1-0 Mideastern) got one goal a piece from Matthew Hargrove, Finnegan Lambe, Chris Patsalos and Conerly Preston. 

Clark Beery dished out a pair of assists. Patsalos, Jack Henry James, Martin Rivera and Ben Weeks all had one.

Goalkeepers Andrew Stein and Ryan Kromke each finished with one save.

The unbeaten Vikings travel to West Brunswick on Thursday at 6 p.m. North Brunswick (5-2, 0-1) hosts New Hanover at 6 p.m. Thursday.

No. 5 Topsail 7, No. 13 West Brunswick 1

Six players found the back of the net for the Pirates, who had no trouble rolling on the road.

Senior Caleb Bartleson scored twice and dished out an assist, while Tanner Kelly finished with one goal and two assists. 

Topsail’s (5-1, 1-0 Mideastern) other goals were scored by Rylan Austin, Ethan Bartleson, Maddox Kelly and Logan Lawson.

Max Colby, Hayden Howell, James Manning and Tyler McVey all handed out one assist. 

The Pirates welcome Croatan at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. West Brunswick (2-5-1, 0-1) travels to Hoggard on Thursday at 6 p.m.

No. 7 Coastal Christian 2, No. 14 Southeastern Homeschool 0

Zane Finley and Kyle Desmond each found the back of the net to give the Centurions their first victory since August 20.

Southeastern Homeschool (0-6) goalkeeper Davidson Good made a remarkable 27 saves to keep his team in the match.

Coastal Christian (3-6-1) hosts Calvary Day School on Friday at 5 p.m. The Cardinals play at East Wake Homeschool on Thursday at 6 p.m.

The Trojans snapped an 18-game losing streak in Mideastern Conference matches by taking the first, third and fourth sets against their county rival.

Senior Morgan Bellamy’s back row kill ended the opening set. 

West Brunswick (2-7, 1-4) jumped out to a 9-3 in the third set and was never threatened. 

A 17-15 deficit in the fourth set turned into a 20-17 lead following a kill from Kayden Cupid, and the Trojans never trailed again.

West Brunswick hosts New Hanover on Thursday at 6 p.m. North Brunswick (4-9, 0-5 Mideastern) welcomes South Brunswick at 6 p.m. Thursday.

No. 3 Ashley 3, No. 2 Hoggard 0

(26-24, 25-16, 25-23)

Annalyse Askew and Bella Cook combined to put down 21 kills in the sweep that kept the Screaming Eagles one game back of Laney in the Mideastern Conference standings.

Ashley (7-5, 4-1) took the opening set on a kill from Askew followed by a hitting error from Hoggard (5-3, 4-1).

The momentum carried over to the second set, which ended on a kill from Cook. 

Askew’s 11th kill completed the sweep. She added six digs and a pair of aces.

Cook finished with 10 kills, seven digs and three blocks. Older sister, Marlee, dished out 26 assists to go along with nine digs and one ace.

The Screaming Eagles also got six digs and two aces from Elizabeth Claire Toomer and seven aces, five digs and four kills from Morgan Madden. 

Katie Ramsland hit .714 with 10 kills and three blocks to lead the Vikings.

Both teams are on the road Thursday night at 6. Ashley travels to Topsail, while Hoggard visits Laney.

No. 6 Topsail 3, No. 4 New Hanover 0

(25-21, 25-22, 25-22)

A big performance of  33 assists, eight digs, four aces and two kills from junior Nelly-Grace Keziah led the Pirates to a home win. 

Sophia Smallwood put down a team-best 11 kills, while Nya Coury added 10 and Ryan Lambert finished with nine.

Topsail (9-2, 4-1 Mideastern) served 11 aces, including five from Smallwood. Cadie Hartley chipped in 16 digs and Olivia Garzelloni had 14.

New Hanover (6-3, 2-3) got double-doubles from seniors Ali Blackwell (15 kills and 13 digs) and Sloane Woolwine (14 kills and 11 digs) as well as junior setter Lillee Moore (37 assists and 11 digs). 

Both teams host nonconference matches at 6 p.m. Wednesday. The Pirates welcome Cape Fear Academy, while the Wildcats take on Coastal Christian.

No. 1 Laney 3, No. 12 South Brunswick 0

(25-14, 25-16, 25-13)

The Buccaneers’ winning streak reached 12 in easy fashion.

Through 12 matches, Laney (12-0, 5-0 Mideastern) has won 36 sets and lost only one.

Brooke Osterhoudt had a team highs in kills (eight) and digs (12). She also had two of the team’s 13 blocks.

Isabel Sandstrum had a big match with 11 digs, eight aces and seven kills. Alleigh Russ narrowly missed out on a double-double by finishing with 15 assists and nine digs.  

The Buccaneers host Hoggard on Thursday at 6 p.m. South Brunswick (0-7, 0-5) travels to North Brunswick at 6 p.m. Thursday.

No. 9 Wilmington Christian Academy 3, Greenville Christian Academy 0

(25-16, 25-23, 25-13)

Georgia Taydus handed out 21 assists and Sarah Garner finished with a team-high 10 digs in the sweep.

WCA (9-3, 2-0 NCCSA 2A District 4) got 15 kills, seven digs and four aces from senior outsider hitter Kenleigh Todd.

Grace Wicks served three aces, while McKenna Hunter, Katelyn McCurry, Caroline Prease and MacKenzie Thomas all put down two kills.

The Patriots host Southside Christian on Friday at 5:45 p.m.

GIRLS TENNIS

New Hanover 9, Topsail 0

Sophomore standouts Sophia Catino and Hanna Davis won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1 and 2 singles, and later teamed up for an 8-0 victory at No. 1 doubles to keep the Wildcats unbeaten.

New Hanover’s (10-0, 6-0 Mideastern) other singles wins came from Lucy Dimock (6-0, 6-1 at No. 3), Elle Harmon (6-4, 6-4 at No. 4), Bella Hocker (6-1, 6-0 at No. 5) and Anna Holt Basinger (6-1, 6-0 at No. 6).

Dimock and Hocker didn’t lose a game at No. 2 doubles. Basinger and Blair Mickle led 4-1 at No. 3 doubles before the Topsail (5-2, 4-2) team was forced to retire.

The Wildcats travel to West Brunswick on Thursday at 4 p.m. The Pirates welcome Ashley at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Hoggard 9, Ashley 0

The Vikings picked up their fifth consecutive win by dropping only four games in six singles matches.

Margaret O’Malley (No. 3) and Helen Bennington (No. 5) won 6-0, 6-0. Elena Berg (No. 1), Emily Cox (No. 2) and Zoe Wilcox (No. 4) had identical 6-1, 6-0 scores, while Hailey Schreiber picked up a 6-0, 6-1 victory at No. 6.

Cox and Bennington won 8-3 at No. 1 doubles. Lucy Boswell and Kat Hildreth didn’t lose a game at No. 2, and Katie Sechrist and Kris Foster completed the sweep with an 8-1 victory at No. 3.

Hoggard (7-1, 5-1 Mideastern) plays at Cape Fear Academy on Wednesday at 4 p.m. Ashley (3-4, 2-3) plays at Topsail on Thursday at 4 p.m.

Laney 9, South Brunswick 0

Laurryen Lennon (No. 3), Ava Broadwell (No. 4) and Analise Garner (No. 6) all rolled to 6-0, 6-0 singles victories as the Buccaneers cruised.

Laney’s (6-2, 4-2 Mideastern) other three singles players – Airlie Buchter (No. 1), Hailey Russell (No. 2) and Linnea Durham (No. 5) each dropped one game.

In doubles, Broadwell and Garner were victorious by an 8-0 score at No. 3. Lennon and Durham won 8-1 at No. 2, while Buchter and Russell teamed up for an 8-2 victory at No. 1.

The Buccaneers host Hoggard at 4 p.m. Thursday. South Brunswick (1-5, 0-4) visits North Brunswick on Thursday at 4 p.m.
