The Buccaneers hit .435 as a team and served eight aces to give new head coach Tod Bonello a victory in his debut.

Senior middle hitter Daija Young finished with a team-high seven kills and five blocks. Laney (1-0) also got four kills and two blocks from Raven Lewis as well as three kills and four aces from Jordan Juanes. Junior setter Reagan Russ dished out 17 assists.

Laney plays at Pender at 6 p.m. on Aug. 26. The Patriots (0-1) travel to Topsail on Tuesday night at 6 p.m.

Trask 3, North Brunswick 1

(25-22, 25-14, 21-25, 25-23)

The Titans opened the season with a home victory by holding off a late run from the Scorpions in the fourth set.

North Brunswick (0-1) got 12 digs, six kills and  six aces from Mackenzie Turner as well as 17 digs and five aces from Jayda Rascoe. Melia Bordeaux put down four kills and had eight assists. She was also the server during a big run in the fourth set that saw the Scorpions battle back from down 24-15 only to fall short.

Trask (1-0) plays at Wallace-Rose Hill on Wednesday night, while the Scorpions play at Coastal Christian at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

BOYS SOCCER

Trask 3, South Brunswick 1

The Titans gave new coach Tyler Grady a win in his debut thanks to a pair of second half goals.

Marquis Anthony, Justin Eaves and Luis Hernandez each found the back of the net. Eaves, who scored on a penalty kick in the 12th minute, also had an assist.

Trask (1-0) goalkeeper Eduardo Gomez finished with five saves. The Titans return to action on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Northside-Jacksonville.

South Brunswick (0-1) plays at Coastal Christian on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.

Laney at NW Guilford canceled

Nearby lightning forced the cancellation of the season opener in Greensboro.

Laney continues its road trip with a contest at West Forsyth on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

West Brunswick at Jacksonville canceled

The teams were on the field for seven minutes before the lightning came.

West Brunswick plays at South Columbus at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

GIRLS TENNIS

South Brunswick 6, Whiteville 3

The Cougars picked up four singles victories and captured a pair of doubles courts to open the season with a home win.

Natasha Barker (6-0, 6-2 at No. 3), Payton Drake (6-4, 6-1 at No. 4), Rebekah Schuyler (6-4, 6-1 at No. 5) and Regan Wild (6-2, 6-2 at No. 6) were South Brunswick’s (1-0) singles winners.

Barker and Schuyler teamed for an 8-1 victory at No. 2 doubles, while Drake and Wild won 8-4 at No. 3.

The Cougars return to the courts on Thursday at Laney.

New Hanover at Broughton canceled

Each team was leading three singles courts when weather forced the nonconference match to be called.

New Hanover is back in action Wednesday afternoon at home against Greenville Rose.
