Senior forward Jack Voth scored 15 of his team-high 17 points in the second half, and the Vikings were terrific down the stretch to earn a hard-fought victory. 

Hoggard (9-2) jumped to to a quick 10-2 lead, but found itself down by 11 points in the third quarter following a 3-pointer from Matthew Lenert.

Reid Lisk ended the quarter with a 3-pointer to cut the deficit to 38-33 and spark an 11-0 run that gave the Vikings a lead they would never relinquish. Nas Session put the home team on top for good with a 3-pointer.

“I just didn’t think our energy was very good in the second quarter,” Hoggard coach Brett Queen said. “We had some guys who did a good job of getting steals and changing the pace of the game.”

After George Marshall (7-2) got to within a single point with 2:04 remaining, Hoggard went inside to Voth on back-to-back possessions to make it a two-possession game.

“We were all pretty locked in toward the end of the game,” Voth said. “We practice for moments like that, and our execution was really good.”

CJ Kornegay was the only other Hoggard player to reach double figures. He finished with 16 points.

Lenert led all scorers with 22 points.

No. 1 New Hanover 73, Cox Mill 56

The unbeaten Wildcats put on a clinic with suffocating defense that led to numerous fastbreak layups. 

Rodmik Allen showed why he’s one of the best underclassmen in the state by scoring a team-high 19 points. New Hanover (7-0) also got 17 points from Zeus Batts. Freshman Kellum Brown drained four 3-pointer en route to his 14 points. 

“Zeus and I have been together in the backcourt since we were kids, and we know defense is how you win games,” Allen said.

Through seven games, the Wildcats are averaging 70.3 points per game.

The contest was tied at 18 after the opening eight minutes, but New Hanover took control by outscoring Cox Mill (6-6) 22-8 in the second quarter.

The Chargers were led by DJ Boyce, who scored 11 of his game-high 20 points in the first quarter. 

No. 4 Cape Fear Academy 56, No. 11 South Brunswick 34

The Hurricanes stormed out to a 19-4 lead after the opening quarter and were never threatened.

Vytas Nausedas reached double figures for the fourth straight game by scoring a team-high 14 points. 

“I’ve been in the gym getting up a lot of shots and they are starting to fall, which is allowing me to play with more confidence,” Nausedas said. 

CFA (9-2) also got 11 points from Thomas Watkins and eight from Simeon Jeffers.

Demerius Wise was the only South Brunswick (2-7) player to reach double figures. He finished with 10 points.

Heritage 58, No. 10 Topsail 27

Jon Mwanda poured in 19 points for the Huskies, who snapped a 10-game losing streak.

Heritage (1-10) didn’t look like a winless team after scoring 20 points in the first quarter to build a 14-point advantage.

Sophomore Levi Beckwith finished with nine points, while Nate Baldovino and Nick Gilmore each chipped in seven.

“I really liked the pace we played with and I hope we can continue to do that for the rest of the tournament,” Heritage coach Tilden Brill said.

Topsail (2-8) was led by Austin Hobson’s eight points. 

Hopewell 62, No. 7 Ashley 33

Quay Watson and Kamari Cooke combined for 30 points in the dominant victory.

Hopewell (7-4) led 18-12 after the opening quarter before extending it to 36-18 at halftime.

Watson led all scorers with 18 points, while Cooke added 12.

“At halftime, we talked about picking up our energy level,” Hopewell coach JaRon Goodson said. “When we’re not playing hard, we’re an average team. When we play hard, you can see what we’re capable of doing.”

Ashley’s (2-5) Treyvon Doughty finished with 11 points.
