Hoggard Holiday Classic basketball tournament coming in December

Wilmington will once again have a basketball tournament around the Christmas holiday.

Hoggard boys basketball coach Brett Queen announced via social media Thursday afternoon that the Vikings will host the inaugural Hoggard Holiday Classic from December 28-30.

The event will feature 10 boys teams and eight girls teams from across the state.

“We are excited to be hosting an event here in Wilmington,” Queen said. “There is a really strong group of both women’s and men’s teams from all over North Carolina. It will be good to have some quality basketball here over the holidays without our teams and fans having to travel.

“We are certainly hopeful that things improve so that we will be able to have the event.”

Along with Hoggard, the other boys teams slated to participate are: Ashley, South Brunswick, Topsail, Apex Friendship, Cardinal Gibbons, Holly Springs, Pamlico, Panther Creek and West Carteret.

Joining the Vikings in the girls event will be: New Hanover, Pender, Topsail, Cardinal Gibbons, D.H. Conley, Pamlico and West Stokes.

The Leon Brogden Holiday Tournament had a 25-year run in Wilmington, but it wasn’t held last year and looks as if it won’t return anytime soon.

The newly founded event won’t be a bracketed tournament. Instead, each team will play three games and predetermined matchups will be announced in the near future.
