2020 Boys Golf Preview

Mideastern Conference

Outlook

There is plenty of talent returning as 11 of the 15 members of last year’s All-Conference team are back. The individual race should be South Brunswick senior Walker Isley’s to lose. The UNCW signee was the Coastal Preps Golfer of of the Year in 2019 after finishing tied for second at the 3A East Regional and fourth at the state championship.

South Brunswick is the clear favorite to win the team title for a third straight season. The Cougars have all five starters back and are looking to improve upon a fantastic 2019 season that saw them finish tied for fifth at the 3A State Championship. Joining Isley on last year’s Coastal Preps First Team was Ralph Stephenson. Luke Boldt and Taylor Combs were both on the Second Team.

Hoggard has a talented trio of underclassmen, led by sophomore Stewart Kinlaw. He was on the Coastal Preps First Team a season ago and fellow sophomore Tate Bowyer made Second Team. The Vikings also added freshman John Logan, who will immediately be one of the league’s top players.

West Brunswick’s Ryan Jahr and Ashley’s Ben Tran are also back and looking to build upon excellent freshmen campaigns.

Outlook

Cape Fear Academy returns three of its top players off last year’s team that finished fifth at the NICSAA 3A State Championship. Pierce Underwood and Vance Young tied for ninth with a two-day total of 158 and both made the Coastal Preps First Team. Miles Lindstrom is also back for his senior season after making Second Team a season go.

Southeastern Homeschool is fielding a team for the first time and features a lot of youth, including talented eighth grader Jude Aliah. Assisting the team is Craig Pawling, who spent time as a professional on the Hooters Tour.
