It was business as usual for the Cape Fear Academy boys soccer team during Friday’s NCISAA 3A quarterfinal match.

Like they’ve done all season, the Hurricanes grabbed an early lead by scoring twice in the opening eight minutes before opening the floodgates in a dominant 8-1 home win over Grace Christian.

They will be back at home Tuesday in the semifinals against the winner of Concord Academy/Gaston Christian School.

“We certainly feel good about where we’re at and we’re looking forward to Tuesday,” said junior Cameron Arne, who had a hat trick to increase his season goal total to 15.

Through 10 matches, the unbeaten Hurricanes have outscored their opponents 66-6, including a 35-0 in the opening half.

The scoring got started early Friday. Arne dribbled through several defenders before slipping a ball to Tommy Morton, who had no trouble finding the back of the net in the second minute.

Six minutes later, Arne took a shot from a tough angle that was turned away by the Grace Christian goalkeeper. The rebound went directly to Campbell McFarlane and he deposited the ball into the empty goal.

Arne finally got on the board himself in the 14th minute off a throw-in from the Eagles. His second goal came three minutes later when the Eagles goalkeeper misplayed a ball that was sent back to him by a defender. Arne was there to corral the ball and slide it into the net.

The hat trick was complete with a goal in the 48th minute that put the Hurricanes up 7-0.

McFarlane added a second goal in the 35th minute off an assist from George Wall. Eighth grader Adam Politi and junior Tate Sheally had CFA’s other goals.

McFarlane leads the team with 17 goals, while Sheally is also in double figures with 12.

“I’ve got Adam to my right and Campbell to my left and I trust those guys will make the right play and we’ll get the job done.”
