BASEBALL

No. 8 Trask 11, West Columbus 1 (6 innings)

Shortstop Isaac Turner went 3-for-3 with a double, home run, three RBIs and three runs scored to help the Titans cruise at home.

Trask (6-3, 2-0 Waccamaw) finished with 13 hits from seven players.

The top three batters in the lineup – O’Mariyan Ennis, Phil Williams and Turner – combined to go 7-for-11 with seven runs scored.

After scoring two runs in the bottom of the first inning, the Titans added five more in the second. Turner’s opposite-field home run in the fourth inning increased the lead to 8-0.

Freshman Matix Wiler ended the game with an RBI single that allowed Turner to score from third base. Wiler and Nick Johnson each had a pair of hits.

Conner Gore tossed a complete game with seven strikeouts and no walks to earn the victory.

Next up for Trask is a road game at West Craven on Saturday at 2 p.m.

No. 2 South Brunswick 4, No. 7 Topsail 3 

Shelton Bocook worked a two-out walk with the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning to secure the walk-off victory.

South Brunswick (9-1, 5-1 Mideastern) scored in the final frame without registering a hit. Patrick Boldt, Walker Jenkins and Banks Hartman also walked.

Hartman had an RBI single in the first inning. The lead doubled in the third on a single from Bocook that scored Jaden Marvin.

Topsail (3-5, 1-5) scored twice in the top of the seventh inning to even the score at 3-3. Brycen Coleman crossed the plate on a wild pitch and Ryan Garmendiz scored on a single to center field from Tatum Hayden.

Hartman earned the victory after tossing 2/3 scoreless innings in relief of Cameron Burgess. The ECU signee struck out ten batters and allowed only two earned runs in his 6 1/3 innings.

Davis Hartman finished with eight strikeouts in 6 1/3 innings for the Pirates.

Both teams are back in action Tuesday night. The Cougars play at West Brunswick at 7 p.m., while the Pirates host Laney at 6 p.m.

No. 4 Ashley 4, Orange 3

A three-run fifth inning that featured a two-run triple from Branton Jernigan and a sacrifice fly from Maddux Green proved to be the difference.

Ashley (8-3) got an outstanding pitching performance from reliever Cam Jernigan, who entered with no outs in the sixth inning of a 4-3 game and the tying run on third base.

Jernigan struck out the next three batters to end the threat. He also had a pair of strikeouts in the seventh to earn the save.

Tanner Collins picked up the victory allowing two earned runs on four hits with four strikeouts in five innings.

Green and UNCW commit Isaiah Hunter both had a pair of hits for the Screaming Eagles. Taylor Hesmer had an RBI double in the second inning.

Ashley is back in action Tuesday night at 6 at North Brunswick.

No. 1 Hoggard 8, Jordan 2

Jaxson Croom went 3-for-3 and Korbin Pettigrew finished 2-for-3 in the home win that kept the Vikings unbeaten.

Both players also added one RBI and scored once. 

Hoggard (8-0) scored five runs in the first inning to grab command. Logan Ponnett had two RBIs and one run scored.

Brady Sumner earned the victory by allowing one earned run with six strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings. Ben Whitehurst didn’t allow a hit in his 1 1/3 innings out of the bullpen.

The Vikings host rival New Hanover on Tuesday at 6 p.m.

No. 3 New Hanover 10, Chapel Hill 5

The Wildcats scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning to build a lead they would never give up.

Conner Marren had a big night at the plate by going 3-for-4. He connected on a two-run homer in the first inning and added a two-run double in the second. Marren also crossed the plate three times.

Junior Jack Shearin pitched 3 2/3 innings out of the bullpen and recorded seven strikeouts. Tanner Lachman and Aleck Creech didn’t all a hit in their one inning of work.

New Hanover (9-2) plays at Hoggard on Tuesday night at 6.

Elizabethton, Tenn. 9, No. 9 West Brunswick 7

Sincere Ledbetter, Freddie Bryant and Zach Steagall all went 2-for-4 with one run scored, but the Trojans couldn’t hold a 7-5 lead.

West Brunswick (2-7-1) scored five runs in the fourth inning to grab the lead, but the visitors responded with two runs in the fifth and sixth innings.

Ledbetter had two doubles, while Landon Everhart had one. The Trojans stole 13 bases, but also left eight runners on base.

The teams will play again on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.

SOFTBALL

No. 5 Trask 14, West Columbus 0 (5 innings)

Fourteen batters came to the plate during a 10-run bottom of the first inning that put the Titans in front for good.

Trask (6-4, 2-0 Waccamaw) finished with seven extra-base hits, including a double and a triple from Logan Fennell.

Madalyn White, Chloe Barnhill, Nilah Holmes and Lacey Jayne each had a double.

Fennell and White both went 2-for-2 with three RBIs and two runs scored, while Holmes was 2-for-3 with three RBIs and one run scored.

Jayne and Trinitee Odom crossed the plate twice. 

Mills earned the victory by striking out a pair of batters in a complete-game effort.

The Titans play at Hoggard on Monday at 6 p.m.

No. 7 West Brunswick 1, No. 9 North Brunswick 0

Anna Frazier scattered four hits and struck out four batters in a complete game to help the Trojans earn their first Mideastern Conference win of the season.

West Brunswick (4-7, 1-4) scored the game’s lone run in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Frazier singled to center field with one out and advanced to third base on a double from Kaylee Sellers. Hailey Martin followed with a sacrifice fly that allowed Frazier to cross the plate.

North Brunswick (1-10, 0-5) pitcher Hannah Robinson was the hard-luck loser despite allowing only two hits and recording eight strikeouts.

Both teams are back in action Tuesday at 6 p.m. The Trojans host South Brunswick, while the Scorpions welcome Ashley.

No. 2 Topsail 8, No. 4 South Brunswick 1

Kennedy Sloan and Zoey Vincent kept the South Brunswick offense at bay by allowing only five hits over seven innings.

Topsail (9-1, 5-0 Mideastern) scored three runs in the second inning and added four in the fifth to put the game out of reach.

Vincent went 3-for-4 with one RBI from the leadoff spot. Emmy Clark had a pair of hits, including a double, and Alyssa Valentic drove in a pair of runs.

Jaylyn Noble stole two bases and crossed the plate three times. 

South Brunswick (8-3, 2-3) committed five errors to spoil solid performances in the circle from underclassmen Kina Davis and Veronica Nation, who combined for 11 strikeouts.

The Pirates host Laney at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The Cougars play at West Brunswick on Tuesday night at 6.

GIRLS SOCCER

No. 5 Topsail 5, No. 6 South Brunswick 0

Freshman Jersie Lawrence and senior Miranda Kakas both scored twice in the comfortable road victory.

Lawrence put home what turned out to be the game winner in the ninth minute. Her other goal came in the 51st minute.

Kakas found the back of the net in the 24th minute to increase the lead to 2-0. In the 52nd minute, Lawrence’s 36-yard free kick hit off the crossbar and Kakas was there for the rebound.

Topsail’s (8-1, 3-1 Mideastern) other goal was scored by Ryan Lambert in the 48th minute.

The Pirates host Laney at 6 p.m. Tuesday, while South Brunswick (4-4-1, 1-1-1) travels to Hoggard on Monday night at 6.

Charlotte Latin 5, No. 8 Cape Fear Academy 0

The Hurricanes suffered their first loss of the season despite getting nine saves from seventh grader Naomi Shanewise.

CFA (4-1-1) will try to bounce back on Monday at 4:15 when its hosts John Paul II.

North Wake Homeschool 5, No. 14 Southeastern Homeschool 1

Senior Noel King scored her team-high seventh goal of the season, but the Cardinals suffered their second straight loss.

Southeastern Homeschool (1-2) hosts Fayetteville Homeschool on Thursday at 4 p.m.

BOYS LACROSSE

Topsail 18, South Brunswick 4

The Pirates cruised to their third consecutive win behind a game-high five goals from Brayden Velasquez.

Alex Davis chipped in three goals and two assists, while Connor Hinson finished with a pair of goals and three assists. Ronan McGuire had a hat trick.

Topsail (6-2, 5-2 Mideastern) also got two goals and two assists from Owen Hoag. Joe Greco found the back of the net twice and Zion Lee scored once.

Next up for the Pirates is a road contest against Laney at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday. South Brunswick (2-7, 2-6) hosts North Myrtle Beach, S.C. on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Topsail 20, South Brunswick 2

Riley Nee finished with a career-high nine assists to lead the way in another lopsided victory.

Taryn Ugliono led Topsail (9-0, 7-0 Mideastern) with six goals, while Lillian Austin chipped in four goals and seven draw controls.

Logan Keenan scored twice and dished out a pair of assists. Tatum Riggins had a hat trick. Nee, Lexi Velasquez, Reagan Amiott, Isabel Buric and Avery White all found the back of the net once.

The Pirates visit Laney at 5 p.m. Tuesday. South Brunswick (1-7, 1-7) travels to West Brunswick on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

GIRLS TRACK & FIELD

Coastal Christian 157, Cape Fear Academy 149.5, Fayetteville Christian 140, Rocky Mount Academy 52.5, Ashley 37, Wilson Christian Academy 29

at UNCW

Freshman Hannah Grace broke her own New Hanover County record by clearing 12-0 in pole vault to help Coastal Christian earn the meet victory.

Grace cleared 11-9 on Wednesday, but that record didn’t last long.

The Centurions also captured the 4×100 (55.58) and 4×200 (1:57) relays. Morgan Robinson had a distance of 67-3 in discus, while Sage Creech and Audrey Borges tied for the win in the 100 hurdles with a time of 19.33.

Cape Fear Academy got a pair of individual victories on the track from Avery Bishop and Bella Santos.

Bishop crossed the finish line first in the 800 (2:38) and 3,200 (13:26). Santos sprinted her way to wins in the 100 (13.64) and 200 (28.16).

The Hurricanes also claimed the 4×800 relay in 11:55.

BOYS TRACK & FIELD

Cape Fear Academy 142.75, Fayetteville Christian 137, Coastal Christian 114.25, Wilson Christian Academy 72.75, Ashley 59.25, Rocky Mount Academy 37

at UNCW

Tanner Macpherson was victorious in the 1,600-meter run (4:55.37) and pole vault (8-7), while teammate Vytas Nausedas won the discus (109-2) and shot put (42-0) to give host Cape Fear Academy the meet victory.

Markus Pastorcic-Straun and Ashley’s Malaki Hill both had a distance of 18-11 in the long jump.

Hill went on to win the triple jump (40-10), while teammate Treyvon Doughty cleared 5-10 in the high jump.

CFA finished first in the 4×200 relay with a time of 1:41.
