GIRLS SOCCER

No. 1 Ashley 2, Ardrey Kell 1

Sophomore standout Karina Peat drilled a 25-yard shot past the goalkeeper with 5:14 remaining in the contest to give the Screaming Eagles a huge home victory.

Ashley (11-0) opened the scoring when Kieran Bradley scored off an assist from Kiley Peat in the 12th minute.

The Screaming Eagles are currently ranked No. 1 in the NCHSAA 4A East RPI. Ardrey Kelly (9-2-1) is No. 5 in the 4A West.

Next up is a home match against West Brunswick on Monday at 6 p.m.

No. 2 Hoggard 0, Charlotte Latin 0

Sophomore Taylor Williams made a remarkable 16 saves to help the Vikings earn a nonconference draw against the unbeaten Hawks.

Hoggard (7-2-1) had seven shots on goal. They welcome Topsail at 6 p.m. Monday.

NCRunners Eastern Tour Closer

Three area teams – Cape Fear Academy, Laney and Trask – were among the 11 teams that competed at the event.

Laney finished as the runner-up with 110 points. CFA was sixth with 58 points, while Trask tied for 10th with five points.

The Buccaneers’ lone victory came from senior Isabella Borelli, who completed the 800-meter run in 2:25.30.

Madison Strickland and Jillian Stough each had a pair of top-five finishes. Strickland was  fourth in high jump (4-10) and fifth in pole vault (8-0), while Stough placed fourth in shot put (30-9.75) and fifth in discus (94-3). 

Kateria Peters finished third in the 400 with a time of 1:04.26. Teammate Lauren Bastable was right behind in 1:04.95.

Mikeriah Williams (100 in 14.26) was fourth, while Kiley Canter (300 hurdles in 54.26) and Jasmine Richardson (13-4.5 in long jump) each finished fifth.  

Laney was second in the 4×800 (10:35), third in the 4×400 (4:22.62) and fifth in both the 4×100 (55.26) and 4×200 (1:55.76).

Area competitors dominated the 3,200. Cape Fear Academy’s Emma Gibbs won with a time of 12:36, and teammate Pennie Utnage was fifth in 13:46.01.

Laney had the other top-five finishers – Camryn Oates (second in 12:56.61), Ava Monahan (third in 13:15.24) and MK O’Malley (fourth in 13:37.44). 

Gibbs was second in the 1,600 (5:56.53) and Utnage was third (5:58.16).

CFA also got a third-place finish from Avery Block in the long jump (14-8) and a fifth-place finish from Sara Paige Harvey in the triple jump (25-7.25).

Ainsley Heath of Trask finished fourth in the 800 with a time of 2:33.59.

Laney’s Daniel Kelmer finished third in the 3,200-meter run (10:18.75) and fourth in the 1,600 (4:39.50), and the Buccaneers placed seventh with 26.5 points.

The Buccaneers also got a third-place finish in the 800 from Lukas Malek (2:06.33) as well as fifth-place finishes from Michael Kalwiss (10-0 in pole vault) and Ethan Strickland (5-2 in high jump).

Walker Morrow of Cape Fear Academy was third in long jump (18-5.5) and fifth in triple jump (39-8.5). The Hurricanes placed ninth with 20 points.
