SOFTBALL

No. 2 South Brunswick 5, No. 3 Hoggard 2

Sophomore Kina Davis struck out 11 batters and also had an RBI single to guide the Cougars to their first victory over the Vikings since joining the Mideastern Conference in 2013.

South Brunswick (14-3, 7-1) had been 0-17 in the series.

The Cougars battled from from a 2-0 deficit after Hoggard (12-6, 6-3) pitcher Macey Ciamillo hit a home run in the top of the first inning. It was her team-high fifth long ball of the season.

A one-out single from Tabatha Martin in the third inning scored Olivia Rogers to cut the deficit in half. The tying run scored two batters later on an error. 

Addison Woodruff led off the bottom of the fourth inning with a double. She then scored the winning run on a one-out single to right field from Veronica Nation.

Nation scored a key insurance run on a passed ball before Davis plated Rogers with the final run on her two-out single up the middle.

Martin finished 2-for-2 with a walk. Ciamillo led the way for the Vikings by going 2-for-3.

The Cougars host Ashley at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Hoggard returns home to take on North Brunswick at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

No. 1 Laney 11, No. 9 West Brunswick 1

The high-powered Laney offense finished with 13 hits, including three home runs, in the dominant road victory.

Layla Carr went 4-for-5 with a pair of home runs, two stolen bases, three RBI and four runs scored.

Bailey Bettencourt hit the other home run, a three-run shot in the second inning that increased Laney’s (14-4, 8-1) lead to 7-0.

Ali Bunch allowed four hits and struck out eight batters in a complete game. She also went 3-for-4 with an RBI at the plate.

Mack Murnane collected a pair of hits, while Mackenzi Curry doubled.

The Buccaneers host South Brunswick on Friday at 6 p.m. West Brunswick (3-17, 1-8) hosts Harrells Christian Academy at 6 p.m. Monday.

No. 4 Topsail 14, No. 5 North Brunswick 0 (5 innings)

The Pirates sent 15 batters to the plate in a nine-run bottom of the first inning.

Mount Olive commit Zoey Vincent went 3-for-3 with three doubles, three RBI and one run scored from the leadoff spot.

Jaylyn Noble was also 3-for-3 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored. Topsail (9-5, 5-4 Mideastern) got two hits and two RBI from Rylee Reuter and Alyssa Valentic. 

Kennedy Sloan pitched three scoreless innings with six strikeouts to secure the win.

Next up for the Pirates is a game at West Brunswick on Tuesday night at 6:30. North Brunswick (4-16, 1-7) travels to Hoggard at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

BASEBALL

No. 6 West Brunswick 4, No. 9 Laney 0

Zach Steagall threw a one-hit shutout with 12 strikeouts and no walks to give the surging Trojans their fifth straight win.

Cam McCotter singled up the middle with one out in the top of the fourth inning to put runners on first and second bases, but Steagall escaped the jam by recording a strikeout and getting a fly out. 

He retired the side in order in each of the next three innings.

West Brunswick (11-9, 3-7 Mideastern) scored its first run in the fifth inning. Garrett Powell led off with a single, but was thrown out at home trying to score on a double from Sincere Ledbetter.

Noah Faulders followed by laying down a bunt. An error from Laney (5-12, 3-7) pitcher Ryan Sproull allowed Ledbetter to cross the plate.

Ledbetter increased the lead an inning later on an RBI double. The Trojans tacked on two more runs to complete the scoring. 

Fluharty and Ledbetter each had two of West Brunswick’s five hits.

The Trojans host Topsail at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. The Buccaneers welcome New Hanover on Tuesday night at 6:30.

No. 5 Hoggard 8, No. 3 South Brunswick 7

After allowing five runs in the bottom of the first inning, the Vikings settled down and rallied for a hard-fought road win.

Hoggard (13-5, 5-5 Mideastern) scored once in the second inning and added three more runs in the fourth to cut the deficit to one.

A two-out single to left field from Damian Bounds in the fifth inning scored John Mason with the tying run.

An inning later, the Vikings took the lead for good on another two-out hit – this time from freshman Preston Smith. Bounds and Smith each had a pair of hits and two RBI. 

An error in the seventh inning allowed Hoggard to add on a big insurance run, because South Brunswick (11-6, 6-4) catcher Patrick Boldt belted a two-run home run in the bottom of the frame.

The Cougars had the tying run on second base with two outs, but Tucker Bowyer entered from the bullpen and shut the door with a strikeout.

Coleton Norris earned the victory. He pitched 2 1/3 innings of relief and struck out four batters.

Luke Dilgard matched Boldt with two RBI to lead the way offensively for South Brunswick. 

The Vikings host North Brunswick on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. The Cougars will try to snap a three-game losing streak when they host Ashley at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday.

No. 2 New Hanover 5, No. 4 Ashley 0

The Wildcats recorded their fourth straight shutout victory thanks to another dominant outing on the mound from seniors Sean Smith and Bromley Thornton. 

Smith got the start and allowed one run with five strikeouts in four innings. Thornton struck out six batters and scattered a pair of hits in his three innings of work.

Shortstop Luke Nixon led off the bottom of the first inning with a triple and scored when Thornton followed with an infield single.

New Hanover (17-2, 8-2 Mideastern) increased its lead to 2-0 on a sacrifice fly from Oakley Rempel in the fourth inning. Conner Marren delivered an RBI single in the fifth inning before scoring on an error.

Ashley (10-9, 5-5) catcher Tanner Berry had a single and a walk.

The Wildcats travel to Laney at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. The Screaming Eagles visit South Brunswick on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.

No. 1 Topsail 7, No. 7 North Brunswick 2

The Pirates had no trouble picking up their 11th straight victory and maintaining a one-game lead over New Hanover in the Mideastern Conference standings.

Freshman Wake Forest commit Rhett Britt earned the victory by striking out five batters and giving up only two hits in 5 1/3 innings. The run he allowed was unearned.

Grady Swinson and Luke Keenan both drove in a pair of runs, while Walker Dixon scored twice.

Topsail (13-5, 9-1) grabbed the lead for good on Swinson’s two-run double in the third inning. The advantage grew to 6-1 after four innings.

Gibson Todd went 2-for-3 with a double. 

Next up for the Pirates is a game at West Brunswick on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. North Brunswick (10-10, 1-9) plays at Hoggard on Tuesday night at 6:30.

South Columbus 11, No. 8 Trask 8

Longwood commit Brandon Bannerman went 4-for-5 with five RBI and one run scored, but the Titans blew an 8-6 lead.

Shortstop Isaac Turner also had a big night at the plate by going 3-for-4 with a walk, two doubles and three runs scored.

Trask (12-6, 4-2 Waccamaw) starting pitcher Conner Gore didn’t factor into the decision. He allowed one earned run on three hits with four strikeouts in three innings.

South Columbus (10-5, 5-1) scored five runs in the top of the sixth inning to grab the lead for good.

Topsail 16, New Hanover 2

The Pirates set a new school record for victories with a dominant performance on the road.

Zion Lee scored four goals and added three assists, while Josh Bowen added three goals and one assist.

Topsail (14-3, 9-3 Mideastern) surpassed the previous record of 13 victories, which came in 2019.

Alex Davis, Connor Hinson and Barrett Swinson each scored twice. The other goals came from Jacob Fell-Ranshaw, Landon Gwinn and John Meyers. 

Davis, Fell-Ranshaw, Swinson, Luke Hobbs and Ronan McGuire all finished with one assist. 

Goalies Marco Ayala and Mathias Rossi combined to make six saves.

The Pirates host Ashley at 7 p.m. Tuesday. New Hanover (4-12, 3-9) travels to West Brunswick on Tuesday at 5 p.m.

Laney 12, South Brunswick 1

Luke Gordon led the way for the Buccaneers with a game-high eight points on three goals and five assists.

Laney (13-4, 8-4 Mideastern) has now won six straight contests dating back to April 4.

Fields Woodard added three goals and two assists, while Carter Warlick put home one goal and added two assists.

Carson Adkins scored twice. James Deffinbaugh, Noah O’Borne and Logan Shaw had the other goals. 

Sophomore Tyler Rutherford won 15 of 17 faceoffs. Goalie Colin Willis stopped five of the six shots he faced.

Both teams are back in action Tuesday evening. The Buccaneers travel to Hoggard at 7 p.m., while South Brunswick (2-13, 2-10) visit North Brunswick at 5 p.m.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Hoggard 17, Ashley 7

A 6-0 run in the first half gave the Vikings the lead for good.

The victory also gave Hoggard (14-1, 12-0) its first Mideastern Conference title since 2019.

Sophomore Addison McGrath started the run by scoring off an assist from Emily Failla with 15 minutes on the clock. Mia Frick then put home back to-back goals to give the Vikings a 4-2 lead.

Anneleise Meyer led all players with six goals. She also had eight draw controls.

Failla and Frick both finished with hat tricks, while McGrath and Adriyana Garrison each scored twice. The other goal came from senior defender Emily Cox in the final seconds.

Goalie Layla Cline made seven saves.

Ashley (8-5, 8-4 Mideastern) got three goals from Bailey Swails as well as two a piece from Ella Bartosik and Sydney Moore. 

Both teams are back in action Tuesday at 5 p.m. The Vikings host Laney, while the Screaming Eagles travel to Topsail.

New Hanover County Championship at Laney (From Thursday)

The Vikings used their depth and strength in the distance events to earn a 17-point victory over the host Buccaneers.

Ashlei Summers led a 1-2-3 finish in the 1,600 meters by finishing in 5:19.18. She was followed by Luci Hosley (5:48.74) and Sarah Martin (5:54.18).

Catalina Valdwijk (3,200 in 11:33.76) and Ella Feehan (100 hurdles in 17.17) were Hoggard’s other winners.

Coastal Christian’s Hannah Grace and New Hanover’s Meagan Lundin each finished with three victories as well as third-place finish.

Grace broke her own state record in pole vault by clearing 13-7.25. She also easily won the long jump (16-6) and triple jump (33-6) and finished third in the 100 meter dash (12.77).

Lundin had an excellent meet by crossing the finish line first in the 100 (12.28), 200 (26.06) and 300 hurdles (48.06). She placed third in long jump with a distance of 15-5.

Laney took three of four relays – 4×100 (52.33), 4×400 (4:11.56) and 4×800 (9:41.66). Bailey Willard swept the throwing events. Her distance of 131-2 in discus was a new area-best for the season. She claimed the shot put with a distance of 33-2.50.

Teammate Ella Warren had a winning time of 2:21.53 in the 800.

Coastal Christian’s Zoe Bos won the 400 in 59.63, while Aaliyah Marshall of Ashley cleared 4-10 to capture high jump.

Hoggard scored 43 points in the distance events and 40 more in jumps to run away with the title.

Six Vikings earned individual wins. Jackson Travis continued his dominance in high jump by clearing 6-2, while Anthony David had a throw of 41-7 in shot put.

On the track, William Holmes (800 meters in 1:57.58), Ryan Ibarra (1,600 in 4:31.11), Luke Adams (3,200 in 9:55.84) and Ethan Panz (110 hurdles in 16.24) crossed the finish line first.

The Vikings were victorious in the 4×200 (1:32.58) and 4×400 (3:30.93) relays.

Brethan Barnhill of New Hanover was the only athlete to win two individual events. He outsprinted the competition in the 100 (10.75) and 200 (22.00). Barnhill was on the 4×100 relay that finished with a time of 42.99.

Teammates Cashmere James (400 in 50.59), Donnell Holmes (42-1.50 in triple jump) and Rashawn Simon (21-00.25 in long jump) also picked up wins. 

Coastal Christian got first-place finishes from Josh Cowell (13-6 in pole vault) and Carter Grace (300 hurdles in 40.93). The Centurions also won the 4×800 relay in 8:39.06.

Ashley’s Cooper Blanton claimed the title in discus with a throw of 120-6.
