COASTAL PREPS THREE STARS OF THE NIGHT

BASEBALL

No. 9 North Brunswick 9, No. 6 New Hanover 3

Senior center fielder Cody Callahan led the way offensively for the victorious Scorpions by going 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored. 

North Brunswick (12-8, 4-7 Mideastern) finished with 12 hits from seven players. Ayden Gore, Will Jones and B.D. Lanier all collected two. 

The game was tied at 1-1 before the home team exploded for six runs in the bottom of the third inning. Josh Hauser put the Scorpions in front for good with a double that scored Lanier. 

Jones, Callahan and Aydean White all drove in runs with singles.

Dylan Stacks got the win by allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits with six strikeouts in five innings. 

Adler Stumpf hit a one-out triple to right field and Chase Leonard followed with a double to get New Hanover (10-11, 4-7) on the board in the bottom of the second inning.

The Scorpions visit South Brunswick at 6:30 p.m. Friday, while the Wildcats return home to take on Ashley on Friday evening at 6:30. 

No. 10 West Brunswick 3, No. 2 Ashley 2 (8 innings)

The Trojans managed to escape a bases loaded jam with no outs in the bottom of the seventh inning, and then scored twice in the top of the eighth to secure the win. 

Noah Faulders doubled home Gage Hickman to give West Brunswick (11-9, 3-8 Mideastern) a 2-1 lead. Faulders later scored on a passed ball with two outs. 

Ashley (16-4, 7-4) cut the deficit to 3-2 on an RBI single from Connor Tew in the bottom of the eighth. 

Tew was replaced by pinch runner Nate Carmack. Hudson Hauck followed with a walk to put runners on first and second with two outs. 

The game ended in controversy when Cole Ivady hit a ball up the middle. The Trojans tried to get the force out at second base, but the throw was wide. Carmack raced around third base and beat the throw home with what appeared to be the tying run.

Thinking his team had just won the game, Ivady threw his helmet in the air. The umpires talked and came to the conclusion that the helmet was thrown before Ivady crossed first base, meaning he was out and the game was over. 

Cooper Wilson earned the win by striking out five batters in 2 1/3 innings. 

UNCW commit Jackson Lee pitched seven innings with six strikeouts for the Screaming Eagles.

A home game against Laney on Friday at 6:30 p.m. is next up for the Trojans. Ashley travels to New Hanover at 6:30 p.m. Friday. 

No. 5 South Brunswick 9, No. 3 Topsail 2

Senior Mannix Crawford went 4-for-4 with a double, four stolen bases, one RBI and one run scored in the impressive victory for the Cougars. 

South Brunswick (10-9, 6-5 Mideastern) built a 5-0 lead after two innings, which was more than enough run support for ace Evan Coartney. The senior struck out 10 batters and allowed one earned run in 6 1/3 innings. 

Jaden Marvin also had a solid night at the plate by going 2-for-2 with a walk, double, three RBI and one run scored. Harrison Mears crossed the plate twice.  

Topsail (10-8, 8-3) sophomore shortstop Gibson Todd had an RBI triple in the fourth inning. He later scored on a ground out from Tyler Wilson. 

The Cougars host North Brunswick at 6:30 p.m. Friday. The Pirates welcome Hoggard on Friday at 6:30 p.m.

No. 7 Laney 5, No. 4 Hoggard 2

The Buccaneers completed the season sweep and picked up their third victory in a row thanks to great pitching performances from Jason Sproull and Luka Rumora.

Sproull got the start and allowed two runs on five hits with eight strikeouts in 5 1/3 innings. Rumora recorded the final five outs without allowing a run. 

Laney (7-10, 5-6) leadoff batter Carston Wedemeyer was 2-for-3 with a walk, one RBI and two runs scored. 

Jack Holliman and Jackson Brooks had two hits a piece. Brooks scored twice, while TJ Ziermann drove in a pair of runs. 

Two of Hoggard’s (16-4, 7-4) six hits came from Preston Smith. 

The Buccaneers host South Columbus in a nonconference game Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. The Vikings travel to Topsail at 6:30 p.m. Friday. 

No. 11 Wilmington Christian Academy 4, Harrells Christian Academy 1

Ryder Whitacre pitched a gem, allowing an unearned run on three hits with 13 strikeouts in 5 2/3 innings to help give coach Trent Mongero his 500th career victory. 

WCA (11-6) plated a pair of runs in the top of the first inning on singles from Whitacre and  Cayden Woolard.

Woolard finished 2-for-2 with a pair of walks and one run scored. 

The Patriots host Southside Christian at 4:30 p.m. Thursday. 

No. 1 Whiteville 10, No. 12 East Bladen 0

Senior Ashton Hammonds, who recently committed to Pitt Community College, continued to show why he’s one of the best pitchers in the state with another dominant outing.

Hammonds scattered just two hits and struck out nine batters without issuing a walk to improve to 8-0 with a 0.18 ERA. 

Whiteville (16-1, 9-0 Waccamaw) sent 13 batters to the plate in a nine-run bottom of the fourth inning.

Seven of the nine starters finished with a hit. J.T. Todd drove in two runs, while Jake Odham crossed the plate twice. 

Another matchup between the teams, this time at East Bladen (11-9, 8-3), will take place at 7 p.m. Friday. 

No. 14 West Columbus 15, No. 17 Pender 4 (5 innings)

Senior center fielder Triston Freeman nearly hit for the cycle, finishing 3-for-3 with a single, double, triple, four RBI and one run scored.

West Columbus (7-11, 3-6 Waccamaw) also got two hits a piece from Stephen Buffkin and Ethan Matheson. 

Drake Grainger and Skyler McNair both scored three runs, while Matheson and Seth Williams crossed the plate twice. 

Matheson pitched a complete game with five strikeouts. 

The teams will meet at Pender (6-12, 0-9) on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

SOFTBALL

No. 8 Trask 5, No. 6 East Columbus 3

Chloe Barnhill doubled home Jalyn Reece-Murray in the bottom of the sixth inning to give the Titans a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. 

Lauren Hall later scored on a passed ball. Barnhill crossed the plate on an RBI groundout from Naima Shepard to complete the scoring for Trask (11-3, 6-3 Waccamaw).

Barnhill pitched a complete game with three strikeouts to earn the win. 

Chynna Patrick belted a solo home run for East Columbus (14-5, 6-3). Ryleigh Owens went 3-for-3 with one RBI and one run scored.

Gracie Coyle took the loss despite allowing only one earned run and striking out four batters in a complete game. 

The Titans host Wallace-Rose Hill on Thursday at 6 p.m. The Gators welcome Trask at 6 p.m. Friday.

No. 12 East Bladen 11, No. 9 Whiteville 9 (8 innings)

Martha Simmons belted a two-run home run with two outs in the top of the eighth inning to give the Eagles a hard-fought win. 

Simmons finished 3-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored. 

Cabria Baldwin went 4-for-4 with two RBI an three runs scored, while Niyah Wooten collected a pair of hits for East Bladen (7-9, 4-7 Waccamaw)

Whiteville (8-10, 5-4) grabbed a 5-4 lead in the bottom of the third inning on a three-run home run from Madalyn Edge. 

Fellow junior Margaret Cartrette sent the game to extra innings by connecting on a two-run homer in the seventh inning. 

The teams will meet again, this time at East Bladen, on Friday at 6 p.m.

No. 10 Pender 16, No. 14 West Columbus 3 (5 innings)

The Patriots finished with 14 hits, eight walks and six stolen bases in a mercy-rule win.

Jamiah Johnson set the tone from the top spot in the batting order by going 4-for-4 with a walk, four RBI and two runs scored. 

Kimora McAllister finished 3-for-3 with a walk, two RBI and three runs scored. Brooke Fuller and Alyna Rooks both had two hits and two RBI. Katie Iddings crossed the plate three times for Pender (11-5, 5-4 Waccamaw).

Two of West Columbus’ (3-14, 0-9) three hits came from Iyana Lowery.

The teams plat at Pender on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

No. 3 South Brunswick 2, No. 1 Topsail 0

Kina Davis pitched a four-hitter with 13 strikeouts to help the Cougars complete the season sweep.

South Brunswick (16-4, 9-2 Mideastern) scored both runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. 

Davis and Shea Brown hit back-to-back one-out singles. Addison Woodruff followed with a double to right field that allowed Davis to score. Brown crossed the plate on a sacrifice fly from Tyianna Cummings. 

Kennedy Sloan pitched well in the loss, allowing just four hits. The senior also finished 3-for-3 at the plate. 

The Cougars host North Brunswick at 6 p.m. Friday, while Topsail (13-4, 9-2) welcomes Hoggard on Friday at 6 p.m.

No. 2 Laney 8, No. 4 Hoggard 3

The victory, along with Topsail’s loss to South Brunswick, gave the Buccaneers sole possession of first place in the Mideastern Conference with three games remaining.

Junior shortstop Layla Carr hit a three-run home run in the top of the second inning to put Laney (14-2, 10-1) on top for good. 

Taylor Lee went 4-for-4 with two stolen bases and three runs scored, while Bailey Bettencourt finished 3-for-4 with an RBI double. 

Pitcher Makenzi Curry struck out six batters and also finished 2-for-3 at the plate. 

Hoggard’s (10-5, 7-4) Macey Ciamillo hit a two-run double in the third inning. 

Both teams have road games on Friday night at 6. The Buccaneers visit West Brunswick, while the Vikings travel to Topsail.

No. 13 Ashley 11, No. 11 West Brunswick 1 (5 innings)

Senior pitcher Emi Lee scattered three hits and struck out six batters to help the Screaming Eagles snap a six-game losing streak.

Ashley (2-17, 2-9 Mideastern) scored three runs in the first and fourth innings and added five more in the third. 

Olivia Albertson, Lydia Gore, Kendall Weaver and Sawyer Rigdon all drove in two runs. Lee crossed the plate three times, while Rigdon and Vayda LeQuire scored twice. 

West Brunswick (9-10, 3-8) got two hits from Chloe Ward. 

The Screaming Eagles play at South View on Thursday at 5 p.m. Next up for the Trojans is a game at Fairmont at 6 p.m. Thursday.

No. 7 North Brunswick 15, No. 16 New Hanover 0 (3 innings)

Seven of the nine starters for the Scorpions scored at least one run in the mercy-rule victory.

Gracie Christianson hit a solo home run and crossed the plate three times. Shanley Hunt had a team-high five RBI.

North Brunswick (5-14, 4-7 Mideastern) finished with five hits and nine walks. Hunt and Alannah Mintz combined on a one-hitter with four strikeouts. 

The Scorpions make the short trip to South Brunswick at 6 p.m. Friday. New Hanover (0-15, 0-11) hosts Ashley on Friday  at 4:30 p.m.

GIRLS SOCCER

No. 5 Cape Fear Academy 2, No. 6 Coastal Christian 1

With first place in the Coastal Plain Independent Conference on the line, the Hurricanes scored twice in the second half to rally for a road win. 

CFA (14-1-0, 6-0-0) evened the score at 1-all in the 48th minute when Milly Kelley scored off an assist from Lucy Lauber. 

The game-winning goal came in the 66th minute. A cross from the Hurricanes hit a Coastal Christian (8-3-2, 5-1-0) defender and ended up in the back of the net. 

Goalkeeper Naomi Shanewise finished with five saves. 

Freshman Paige Everett scored the Centurions’ goal in the 38th minute. Goalkeeper Emily White made seven saves.

CFA’s next match is at Arendell Parrott Academy at 4 p.m. Friday. The Centurions host Greenfield School on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

No. 8 Trask 2, East Columbus 1

The Titans remained undefeated in Waccamaw Conference play thanks to a two-goal performance from freshman Nayeli Sanchez. 

Kenya Lewis and Alina Sandoval dished out the assists. Trask (9-5-1, 5-0-0) goalkeeper Caroline Metcalfe finished with five saves. 

Next up is a match at James Kenan on Thursday evening at 6.

No. 3 Laney 9, No. 11 North Brunswick 0

Olivia Hennessy’s unassisted goal in the 15th minute proved to be the game winner.

Laney (10-3-1, 6-3-0 Mideastern) ended the game in the 77th minute when Samantha McNeill scored. 

Laney Parker scored twice and handed out an assist, while Olivia Duleba added two goals and Jamsine Hicks handed out three assists. 

Brynn Arne, Kenzie Badawi and Lane Ellis put home the other goals. Kenzie Fletemeyer and Sydney Holmes each had an assist. 

Goalkeepers Caeli Sullivan and Olivia Venditti combined to make three saves to preserve the shutout. 

The Buccaneers return home to take on South Brunswick at 6 p.m. Friday. North Brunswick (4-12-1, 0-8-1) travels to West Bladen on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

No. 2 Hoggard 8, No. 9 West Brunswick 0

Standout junior Ellis Kelly added to her area-leading goal total (32) by finding the back of the net four more times in a shutout win. 

Brielle Archer dished out three assists to go along with one goal. Ava Cantrill, Avery Fisher and Lila Jane Wilson also scored. 

Sophie Scott handed out two assists, while Avery Barr and Addison Wenger both finished with one. 

Hoggard (12-3-1, 8-1-0 Mideastern) goalkeepers Taylor Williams and Kylah Long shared the clean sheet. 

The Vikings visit rival Ashley at 6 p.m. Friday night. West Brunswick (2-9-2, 1-7-1) plays at New Hanover on Thursday at 6 p.m.

No. 13 Wilmington Christian Academy 6, Greenville Christian Academy 2

The Patriots scored three goals in each half to roll at home.

Kaylee Leisen finished with two goals and one assist, while Natalie Cook scored twice and Ava Gelich chipped in one goal and two assists. 

WCA’s (6-8, 6-1) other goal came off the foot of seventh grader Lucy Hastings. Kayli Altobello-Clark had an assist. 

Next up is a match at East Columbus on Friday at 6 p.m.

BOYS LACROSSE

Laney 19, North Brunswick 1

Ten Buccaneers scored, including a game-high four goals from senior Josiah Capps. 

Laney (13-4, 10-3 Mideastern) led 5-0 after the first quarter and 12-1 at halftime. 

Carter Warlick scored twice and dished out five assists, while George Adams and Logan Shaw both finished with two goals and two assists. Ty Rutherford also found the back of the net twice. 

Cash Nix had a hat trick and one assist. The other goals were scored by Finley Anderson, Finn Carlstead, Hutch Melind and Noah Oborne.

The Buccaneers play at South Brunswick at 7 p.m. Thursday. North Brunswick (2-13, 2-11) hosts Topsail on Thursday night at 7.

Ashley 16, South Brunswick 4

Ethan Tribble and Cooper Wert both scored four goals for the victorious Screaming Eagles.

Anthony Blackburn added two goals and three assists, while Zacorri Stalls also finished with five points by scoring once and handing out four assists. 

Peyton Ashley, Will Dittman, Curren English, Evan Loyd and Tyler Salvati found the back of the net.

Ashley (12-3, 11-2 Mideastern) goalies William Griffen and Travis Gainey combined to make six saves. Harrison Bayley and Harris McKoy won 24 of 25 faceoffs. 

The Screaming Eagles play at Hoggard on Thursday at 5 p.m. South Brunswick (9-8, 6-7) hosts Laney at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Topsail 18, New Hanover 0

The Pirates claimed at least a share of the Mideastern Conference title for the first time in program history with a dominant win at home. 

Zion Lee led the way with a hat trick. Alex Davis, Tripp Dugan, Connor Hinson and Sam Kessel all scored twice.

Hinson, Aengus Maxwell and Barrett Swinson dished out two assists a piece. 

Topsail’s (16-2, 12-1) other goals came from Colton Beatty, Ilias Carrillo, Eric Deprato, Tully Dugan, Caleb Hinson, Kayden Robles and Brayden Wicker. 

Both teams play on the road Thursday at 7 p.m. The Pirates visit North Brunswick, while New Hanover (3-14, 2-11) travels to West Brunswick.

GIRLS LACROSSE

Hoggard 15, West Brunswick 0

Addison McGrath scored four goals and added an assist to help the Vikings pick up their second victory in as many days. 

Hoggard (7-11, 7-6 Mideastern) also got two goals a piece from Kate McGrath and Camden Reed. Logan Campbell won eight draws to go along with one goal and one assist. 

Katie Coble, Natalie Hanson, Emily Kerner, Chloe Norvell, Sophie Soloman and MG White also scored. Howard signee Adriyana Garrison dished out a pair of assists. 

A home game against Ashley on Thursday at 7 p.m. awaits the Vikings. West Brunswick (4-20, 2-11) hosts New Hanover at 5 p.m. Thursday.

BOYS TENNIS

New Hanover 5, Hoggard 4

After falling behind 4-2 after singles play, the Wildcats swept all three doubles courts to prevail on the road. 

The result meant the rivals tied for the Mideastern Conference title. A tiebreaker match to decide which team gets the higher playoff seed for the 4A playoffs will take place later this week at New Hanover (13-4, 13-1). 

Bryce Morrison and Jack Snyder earned a hard-fought 9-7 victory at No. 1. The teams of Augie Ballantine/Cutter Morgan (8-3 at No. 2) and Owen Alford/Reilly Benton (8-5 at No. 3) also prevailed. 

Ballantine cruised to a 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles, while Alford picked up a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 3.

Hoggard’s (14-1, 13-1) points came from Samin Bhan (6-0, 7-6 at No. 2), Logan Tamadon (6-4, 6-3 at No. 4), Wells Lee (6-2, 6-0 at No. 5) and Ethan Ten Brink (6-0, 6-1 at No. 6).

Cape Fear Academy 9, Coastal Christian 0

The Hurricanes made quick work of their rival to stay undefeated in Coastal Plain Independent Conference play.

Jasxon Rodgers cruised by a score of 8-0 at No. 5 singles, while Max Weckel (No. 1) and Caden Mathew (No. 3) both dropped just one game.

Owen Watkins (8-2 at No. 2) and Liam Tyre (8-3 at No. 4) were also victorious. The winning doubles teams were Hayes Gilbert/Mattheus Lautenbach (8-2 at No. 1) and Ben Kane/Ray McDonald (8-3 at No. 2).

CFA (11-2, 7-0) received forfeits at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles. 

The Hurricanes play at Greenfield School on Thursday at 4 p.m. Coastal Christian (0-11, 0-5) visits Arendell Parrott Academy at 4 p.m. Thursday.
