For the second day in a row, the Hurricanes captured a Coastal Rivers Conference match.

CFA’s William Wells shot an even-par 72 to claim medalist honors. He was followed by teammates Cash Scerri and Spencer Mills, who both finished with a 74.

Stephen Chiavetta carded a 79, while William Mann shot 83. Will Pohlman finished with an 86.

Coastal Christian was led by Sam Tanner’s 90. Paxton Wright (100) and Duff Greene (112) had the other counting scores.

Pinecrest Invitational

at Pinehurst No. 8 (Par 72)

Three area teams – Hoggard, New Hanover and Southeastern Homeschool – competed in the 20-team event.

The Vikings finished sixth with a score of 315. They were led by freshman Dylan Lewis, who had a round of 78 that included three birdies.

Tate Bowyer, Maddux Cook and John Logan all finished with a 79.

New Hanover freshman Carson Etters had the lowest score among area players with a 77 that put him in a tie for 17th.

Teammates Nick Pohlman (81), Justin Tracy (83) and Frank Averitt (86) had the other counting scores.

Max Brutus finished a 90 to lead the way for Southeastern Homeschool. Davidson Good was one stroke behind, while Canon Lang had a 97 and Ben Tomazic shot 102.

Nine-hole match at Highland Country Club (Par 36)
From Tuesday

Will Pohlman shot a 1-over-par 37 to claim medalist honors by one stroke over teammate Cash Scerri and lead the Hurricanes to a comfortable win.

The match was called after nine holes due to inclement weather. 

CFA also counted a 39 from Spencer Mills. William Wells was unable to finish his round.

Coastal Christian counted a 44 from Paxton Wright, a 46 from Sam Tanner and a 47 from Brayden Fimble. 

GIRLS LACROSSE

Laney 10, Ashley 9 (OT)

Caitlin Cronemiller scored the game-winning goal just before the horn sounded to end the first overtime period.

The sophomore midfielder led Laney (11-6, 10-4 Mideastern) with four goals and one assist. Lolly Maginnes and Erin McConnell each put home two goals.

Goalie Ava Kunza finished with six important saves. The other goals were scored by Kira Eldridge and Avery Hoey.

Ashley (12-3, 11-3) was unable to complete the season sweep. They won the first meeting by a score of 7-3 on March 25.

Both teams have completed the regular season and now await their playoff seed and first round opponent. The bracket will be released Friday.

Hoggard 16, South Brunswick 2

The Vikings concluded the regular season with a dominant home win thanks in large part to a career-high six goals from Emily Failla. 

The junior also dished out a pair of assists. Logan Campbell had a big performance with seven ground balls, five draw controls, three assists and two goals.

McKenna Lewis had a hat trick, while Hoggard (10-8, 9-5) also got one goal a piece from Kajsa Andersson, Adriyana Garrison, Anneleise Meyer, Chloe Norvell and Ellie Walker.

Meyer finished with a team-high six draw controls.

The Vikings will find out their playoff seed and first round opponent Friday. South Brunswick (3-11) has concluded its season.

Topsail 16, North Brunswick 0

Iceseas Siebenthal scored a team-high three goals in the home victory that concluded the regular season for the the two-time Mideastern Conference champions.

Topsail (17-1, 14-0 Mideastern) has outscored its opponents 313-81.

Lillian Austin finished with seven draw controls, two goals and two assists, while Tatum Riggins chipped in two goals and two assists.

Taryn Ugliono had four draw controls, two goals and one assist. Julies Sydes also had a pair of goals and one assist.

Riley Conetta found the back of the net twice, while Olivia Anderson, Alyssa Andrews and Isabel Buric all finished with one goal.

The Pirates should receive a top-three seed for the playoffs when the brackets are released Friday. North Brunswick’s (0-15, 0-14) season is complete.

New Hanover 7, West Brunswick 1

A six-goal performance from Leah Nelson gave the Wildcats a season sweep.

Fellow freshman Blair Mickle had the other goal and also added five ground balls and three caused turnovers.

New Hanover (6-8-1, 6-8 Mideastern) goalie Bella Cosgrove faced five shots and made four saves.

The Wildcats will wait to see if they have qualified for the playoffs. West Brunswick (6-11, 3-10) has concluded its season. 

BOYS LACROSSE

Ashley 14, Laney 7

The Screaming Eagles concluded the regular season with a win by doubling up the Buccaneers on the road.

No individual stats were provided for Ashley (14-4, 12-2 Mideastern).

Laney (12-5, 9-5) was led by Luke Gordon’s two goals and one assist. Mason Vaughan added one goal and three assists, while Fields Woodard scored twice.

The other goals were scored by Carson Adkins and Logan Shaw.

Both teams will find out their playoff seed and first round opponent when the brackets are released Friday.

Hoggard 17, South Brunswick 1

Junior Cole Luhrsen went 12-for-12 on face-offs and the Vikings won 19 of 21 attempts in a dominant win that wrapped up an unbeaten regular season.

Charles Wilt led the offense with three goals and one assist. Walker Brown, Josh Richards and Kevin Serrato all had two goals and one assist.

Hoggard (18-0, 14-0 Mideastern) got one goal and one assist from Zachary Coyle, Blake Edwards and Kyle McCarthy as well as one goal a piece from Andrew Campbell, Parker Hudson, Conrad Newman, Connor Savage and Jake Stone.

Sean Hession dished out a team-best three assists. Goalies Tommy Burgee, Ben Long and Collin Parker combined to make five saves.

The Vikings will find out their playoff seed and first round opponent Friday. South Brunswick (4-12, 4-10) will also await its playoff destiny.

Topsail 15, North Brunswick 1

Brayden Velasquez had a hat trick and three assists for the Pirates.

Alex Davis and Ronan McGuire also finished with three goals to go along with one assist, while Connor Hinson and Zion Lee both finished with one goal and three assists.

Topsail’s (12-5, 9-5 Mideastern) other goals were scored by Joe Greco, Jack Lambert, Evan Martindale and Cooper Seidner. 

Goalies Marco Ayala and Jack Patrizi combined to make seven saves.

The Pirates await their playoff seed and first round opponent. North Brunswick (5-9, 5-9) has qualified for the 1A/2A/3A playoffs. They will find out their seed and first round opponent Friday.

SOFTBALL

No. 1 Hoggard 13, No. 7 North Brunswick 0

Allie Royal belted a pair of home runs and drove in five runs to keep the Vikings in a tie for first place in the Mideastern Conference.

The UNCW commit hit a two-run homer in the first inning Tuesday night. Lightning forced the game to be suspended with Hoggard (12-4, 9-1) leading 3-0 in the bottom of the third inning.

Royal’s second blast came in the sixth inning to increase the lead to 8-0. She also added a triple.

Bella Roberts went 3-for-3 with a walk, two stolen bases, three RBIs and three runs scored. Sydney Ciamillo also collected three hits, including a double.

Macey Ciamillo, Gracie Mabrey and Sydney Short all finished with two hits. Macey Ciamillo and Mabrey scored twice, while Short had a pair of RBIs.

Macey Ciamillo also earned the victory by scattering four hits and striking out five batters in a complete game.

North Brunswick (3-15, 1-8) got a pair of hits from leadoff batter Jayda Rascoe. 

Both teams return to action Friday at 6 p.m. The Vikings travel to South Brunswick, while the Scorpions welcome Topsail.

No. 9 Pender 21, West Columbus 5 (4 innings)

Telisha Moore finished 3-for-3 with a walk, double, triple, four stolen bases, five RBIs and four runs scored in the mercy-rule home win.

Pender (5-8, 2-5 Waccamaw) scored six runs in the first inning and exploded for 11 more in the second.

Olivia Gurganus went 2-for-3 with a walk, double, three stolen bases, two RBIs and three runs scored. Zalie Rivenbark had two hits, a walk, two runs scored and one RBI.

Brooke Fuller drove in three runs, while Toni Bland and Lillie Hansen both crossed the plate three times.

The teams meet again at West Columbus on Friday night at 6.

BASEBALL

No. 7 Topsail 7, No. 5 Ashley 4

Despite managing only two hits, the Pirates found a way to come away with a home victory that increased their winning streak to three.

The game was tied at 4-all before Topsail (7-8, 3-8) scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Joe Hall and Brycen Coleman led off with back-to-back walks. Cameron Rickabaugh reached on an error to load the bases with no outs. 

After Davis Hartman popped out, Alex Smith was hit by a pitch to allow Hall to score what turned out to be the game-winning run. 

Christian Davis drove in a run with a fielder’s choice, while Topher Rollins followed with an RBI single.

Ashley (12-7, 6-5) loaded the bases in the top of the seventh inning, but Grady Swinson came on in relief and got a game-ending groundout to earn the save.

The Screaming Eagles got three hits a piece from Tristen Odham and Tanner Berry. Berry drove in a pair of runs, while Odham stole three bases. 

The Pirates travel to North Brunswick on Friday at 6 p.m. while the Screaming Eagles play at Laney at 6 p.m. Friday.

GIRLS SOCCER

No. 13 Trask 2, No. 14 Pender 1

The Titans completed the season sweep thanks to a pair of goals from Kenya Lewis. 

Lewis also scored twice in the first meeting, which was a 3-1 win for Trask (6-11, 5-3 Waccamaw) on April 19.

Pender’s (4-13-1, 2-7-1) lone goal was scored by Damaris Hesiquio-Gallardo.

Next up for the Titans is a home match against Whiteville on Friday at 6 p.m. The Patriots welcome West Bladen at 6 p.m. Monday.

BOYS TENNIS

No. 11 Cardinal Gibbons 5, No. 6 New Hanover 1

First round NCHSAA 4A playoffs

The Mideastern Conference champions saw their season come to a close against the talented Crusaders.

Sophomore Augie Ballantine had New Hanover’s (12-3) lone victory by a score of 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2 singles.

Alan Dimock battled hard at No. 1, but suffered a 6-2, 7-6(4) loss.

Cardinal Gibbons dropped only four games at No. 3, 4, 5 and 6.

No. 4 Green Hope 5, No. 13 Hoggard 1

Varun Varadarajan rallied for a 1-6, 6-4, 11-9 win at No. 2 singles, but the Vikings lost the other five courts to see their season come to a close.

Sarthek Mishra nearly sent the match to doubles, but he lost by a score of 4-6, 7-5, 10-8 at No. 6.

Hoggard finished the season with a record of 11-4.
