Sophomore Sophie Morvil scored a brilliant goal on a long volley in the third minute to help the Screaming Eagles complete the season sweep and take over second place in the Mideastern Conference.

Both defenses were terrific the entire night. Ashley (11-2-2, 7-2-1 Mideastern) center back Ava Cerra turned away a would-be goal off a free kick in the 64th minute.

Laney’s (12-3-1, 7-3) Taylor Chism was fouled from behind about five yards outside the box. She took the free kick and hit it toward the far post, but Cerra was standing on the goal line and was able to keep the ball out of the net.

With less than two minutes remaining, the Buccaneers played a dangerous ball into the box, but Ashley goalkeeper Molly Maguire read it well and made a sliding catch.

The Screaming Eagles won the first meeting between the teams by a score of 2-0 on March 25. They are the only team to keep the Buccaneers off the scoreboard this season.

“We don’t focus on taking one person away on the opposing team,” Ashley coach Erik Graf said. “We like to focus on team defense and play the ball more than any particular player.”

Ashley had a pair of shots hit off the post – MacKenzie Milliman in the first half and MacKenzie Farr in the final seconds.

Laney goalkeeper Dakota Workman finished with seven saves.

Both teams are back in action Monday at 6 p.m. The Screaming Eagles visit New Hanover, while the Buccaneers travel to Hoggard.
