The Vikings kept their hopes of a Mideastern Conference title alive with a road victory that was highlighted by a nine-run third inning.

Thirteen batters came to the plate and eight of them singled. Bennett McNeill laced a base hit to center field to score Korbin Pettigrew and put Hoggard (14-4, 9-3) up 2-1.

Jaxson Croom and Matt Hargrove both had RBI bunt singles, while Brody Sumner drove in a pair of runs with a hit to right field.

With the win, the Vikings moved to within one game of South Brunswick (17-2, 10-2) with two games remaining.

Sumner had an outstanding outing on the mound. He allowed two runs – one earned – on six hit with 10 strikeouts. He is now 6-1 with a 1.93 ERA.

Pettigrew went 3-for-3 with a walk, two stolen bases and three runs scored from the leadoff spot.

Ashley (13-7, 7-5 Mideastern) entered on a three-game losing streak in which it was outscored 34-10.

Collins, the reigning Coastal Preps Pitcher of the Year, retired the first 13 batters he faced. An error in the bottom of the fifth inning ended his perfect game bid.

Pinch hitter Jake White delivered a two-out single in the top of the seventh inning that scored pinch runner Jaxon Jones with the only run of the game.

Cam Jernigan worked a walk and was replaced on first base by Jones. Taylor Hesmer got down a sacrifice bunt to move Jones to second base.

Laney (11-7, 6-6) nearly had a walk-off victory, but Connor Kane’s drive to right field with Elliot Melind on first base stayed in the yard.

With the bases loaded and one out, Ayden Rogers hit a line drive right at Jernigan, and the first baseman stepped on the bag for a game-ending double play.

Grant Pyrtle was the hard-luck loser. He pitched 6 2/3 innings and allowed only four hits while recording five strikeouts.
