A 2-under-par 70 from Stephen Chiavetta gave Cape Fear Academy a 33-stroke victory on its home course.

After shooting 37 on the front 9, Chiavetta fired a 3-under 33 on the back side. 

Teammate Spencer Mills was the runner-up with a 73. The Hurricanes’ other counting score was a 77 from William Wells.

All three of CFA’s other players shot in the 80s – Cash Scerri (80), Will Pohlman (82) and Logan Rogers (85).

Coastal Christian was led by Vaughn Brodowski, who finished with an 88.

Mideastern Conference match at Lockwood Folly (Par 72)

New Hanover’s Will Cherry and Topsail’s Will Morgan each shot a 1-under-par 71 to tie for medalist honors. 

It was Cherry’s third individual victory of the season. The freshman now has a stroke average of 74.0.

Morgan became the sixth player in the conference to finish atop the leaderboard and second from Topsail, joining Bryce Koehler. The 71 was Morgan’s best score of the season.

New Hanover also counted a 75 from Frank Averitt, 76 from William Davis and 78 from Chris Andrew Etters to claim its sixth straight conference victory.

Hoggard was led by Maddux Cook’s 72 and John Logan’s 75. Jackson Hoyle and Dylan Lewis each carded an 81.

Thanks in large part to Morgan’s performance, Topsail had its best score of the year. Koehler (77), Jack Batts (78) and David Quinones (83) had the other counting scores.

North Brunswick sophomore Ethan Trexler was fourth with a season-best 74.

GIRLS SOCCER

It only took 46 seconds for the Buccaneers to grab the lead, which ended after 54 minutes.

Kenzie Fletemeyer scored what turned out to be the game winner off an assist from Jasmine Hicks.

Olivia Duleba had a big performance with two goals and two assists. Laney (8-4-1, 3-2 Mideastern) also got a pair of goals from Grace Ensign as well as a goal and two assists from Hicks. 

Laney Parker had one goal and one assist, while Grace Diener and Reagan Landon each put home one goal. Kenzie Badawi dished out one assist.

The Buccaneers host West Brunswick at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. North Brunswick (5-5-3, 1-3-1) welcomes Topsail on Wednesday at 6 p.m.

No. 2 Hoggard 2, No. 4 Topsail 1

Avery Barr headed home a cross from Ella Johnson with 12:34 left in the hard-fought home victory for the Vikings.

Hoggard (8-2-1, 4-1 Mideastern) struck first on a Mia Neuwirth goal in the 34th minute. 

Megan Hughes drilled a shot from distance for Topsail’s (7-4-1, 2-3) lone goal in the 53rd minute.

Both teams are back in action Wednesday night at 6. The Vikings visit South Brunswick, while the Pirates travel to North Brunswick.

No. 7 New Hanover 1, No. 9 South Brunswick 0

A second-half goal from senior Sloane Woolwine proved to the difference. 

New Hanover (4-2-2, 2-2-1 Mideastern) goalkeeper Bella Ellison stopped all five shots she faced.

The Wildcats play at Ashley on Wednesday at 6 p.m. South Brunswick (4-4, 1-4) welcomes Hoggard at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

No. 1 Ashley 12, No. 10 West Brunswick 0

Ten Screaming Eagles found the back of the net in the mercy-rule home win that ended at halftime.

Kieran Bradley and Bryson Clendenning both scored twice and dished out a pair of assists, while Marea Bradley and Karina Peat chipped in one goal and two assists.

Ashley (11-0, 5-0 Mideastern) also got one goal a piece from Mackenzie Farr, Zoe Finelli, Hailey Frazier, Sophia Hernandez, Kaitlyn Marcinowski and Ellie Zimmerman. 

Finelli, Savannah Manset, Sophie Morvil and Kiley Peat all dished out one assist.

Next up for the Screaming Eagles is a home match against New Hanover on Wednesday night at 6. West Brunswick (5-3-2, 0-3-2) visits Laney at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

SOFTBALL

No. 9 Pender 9, Whiteville 6

Gracelyn Morrison, Olivia Gurganus and Lillie Hansen all had doubles in a seven-run top of the fifth inning that lifted the Patriots to their first Waccamaw Conference victory.

Gurganus and Hansen both finished 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored. 

Hansen belted a solo home run in the second inning to give Pender (4-6, 1-2) a 1-0 lead. She also earned the victory by allowing one earned run and striking out five batters in a complete game.

The teams play at Pender on Wednesday at 6:30 p.m.

No. 8 Ashley 5, East Bladen 4 (9 innings)

The Screaming Eagles snapped an eight-game losing streak on a walk-off double from Hannah Douglas.

Sinaiya Gonzalez led off the bottom of the ninth inning with a bunt single. She stole second base and advanced to third on a sacrifice fly from Emerson Lee. 

That brought up Douglas, who drilled her double to center field on the second pitch of the at-bat. 

Ashley (3-10) finished with nine hits, including two a piece from Gonzalez, Douglas and MaKenna Carter. 

Deirdre Donovan scattered a pair of hits in 3 1/3 scoreless innings to secure the victory.

The Screaming Eagles travel to North Brunswick on Tuesday night at 6.

No. 3 Hoggard 10, Eastern Randolph 0 (6 innings)

Sophomore Macey Ciamillo needed only 74 pitches to complete the shutout.

Ciamillo scattered six hits and struck out a pair of batters. She was able to work out of jams in the first and third innings. 

Hoggard (9-3) had seven hits to go along with 10 walks and six stolen bases.

Jordan Martin hit a double, drew two walks and scored three runs. Sydney Ciamillo and Maddie Scanlan both crossed the plate twice. 

The Vikings took the lead for good in the second inning on a one-out single from Alyssa Norris that plated Martin. The advantage was 3-0 after four innings.

The game ended with one out in the bottom of the sixth inning when Tristan Shivers singled to left field, allowing fellow freshman Ava Cook to score. 

Next up is a road game at West Brunswick on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

Southeastern Homeschool 9, Coastal Christian 0

Finn Petit (No. 2) and Ben Galyean (No. 5) won 6-0, 6-0 in singles to help the Cardinals complete the sweep.

Davidson Good (6-2, 6-0 at No. 1), Andy Galyean (6-3, 6-1 at No. 3) and Luke Ertzberger (6-1, 6-1 at No. 4) were also victorious. 

Both doubles teams – Good/Ben Galyean (No. 1) and Petit/Aaron Santee (No. 2) – had identical 8-3 scores.

Southeastern Homeschool (2-1) won by forfeit at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles.

The Cardinals host Fayetteville Christian on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m. Coastal Christian (0-6) plays at Whiteville on April 18 at 4 p.m.

GIRLS LACROSSE

New Hanover 18, Cape Fear Academy 11

The Wildcats picked up a home nonconference win to improve to 7-4.

No individual stats were provided for New Hanover, which hosts South Brunswick at 5 p.m. Tuesday. 

CFA (4-3) got hat tricks from Isabel Bellamy, Megan Connaughton and Elizabeth Harris. Liza Wells scored twice, while Sadie Branch handed out two assists.

Macy Stengle had a team-high 10 draw controls. Goalie Izzy Culpepper made 15 saves.

The Hurricanes play at New Bern on Wednesday at 5 p.m.

BOYS LACROSSE

Marysville (Ohio) 7, New Hanover 5

Junior Addison Kamm scored four of the Wildcats’ five goals in the home loss.

Kamm now has a team-high 30 goals on the season. Caius Allman also found the back of the net.

New Hanover (3-8) hosts South Brunswick on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
